Amanda Gorman - parent wanted her banned

Post by ProfX »

As our glorious Guv DePutin sits down to have a fireside chat with Elon Musk in TwitterSpaces (no, I have no idea how to listen, no I have no interest in doing so) ... preparing to announce the most unsurprising presidential campaign announcement in history ...

White House backs Amanda Gorman after a parent tried to ban her inaugural poem from a Florida school
https://www.businessinsider.com/white-h ... oem-2023-5

The White House is backing Amanda Gorman after a Florida parent challenged poetry.
"The president and his administration certainly stand with her...," Karine Jean-Pierre said.
A parent tried to ban the poem from a Florida school, saying it could "indoctrinate students."

A Florida parent asked to ban Gorman's book of poetry at Bob Graham Education Center in Miami because "it is not educational and have indirectly hate messages" and it could "cause confusion and indoctrinate students," according to a copy of the parent's complaint obtained by the Florida Freedom to Read Project and shared by Gorman. The parent mistakenly wrote that the book was written by Oprah Winfrey, who a foreword for the book.

[snip]

At age 22, Gorman was the youngest inaugural poet ever, taking the stage outside the U.S. Capitol shortly after the January 6 insurrection by former President Donald Trump's supporters.

"I'm gutted," she wrote on Twitter Tuesday, saying she wrote the poem "so that all young people could see themselves in a historical moment."

[snip][end]

I know, I know - it wasn't banned, just moved to the middle school section, but remember she wrote it as one of our youngest poets for a young audience, it was young people she was addressing. This probably never would have even been moved (or the other works) if it weren't for this "challenge".

This parent, though, did want her poem banned. Completely. What is age inappropriate about her poem? That it inspires young people? Why was moving it even necessary?

Is this the Florida that Guv Ron wants to use as the model for the entire nation? Where one troll can deprive young readers of great literature?

Majority of book ban requests were made by only 11 people: analysis
https://www.rawstory.com/book-ban-2660547890/

Right-wing activists have been working in recent years to remove what they say are objectionable books from local libraries -- but it turns out that a tiny number of them are responsible for most of the book ban requests.

Analysis conducted by the Washington Post found that only 11 people were responsible for more than half of more than 1,000 different book challenges analyzed by the paper, with one person responsible for 92 challenges just by himself.

"Together, these serial filers constituted 6 percent of all book challengers — but were responsible for 60 percent of all filings," the Post states.

North Carolina resident Michelle Teague acknowledged to the Post that she was singlehandedly responsible for 24 different book challenges, which included titles such as Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita," Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner," and Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye.”

[snip]

"Sixteen percent of all objections claimed that school books violated either state obscenity laws or legislation passed in the past three years restricting education on race, racism, sexuality and gender identity," the Post writes. "Calling books 'illegal' was the ninth-most common reason employed by book challengers. This tactic was especially popular in Florida and Texas: Of the 153 complaints contending books were illegal, 56 percent were brought in Florida and 18 percent in Texas."

[snip][end]

This isn't democracy, it's a tyranny by a trolling minority. Many of whom aren't even parents with students in the districts where they file their challenges...

Joe and Glenn will ignore this thread. It's what they want. They love the bans.

Color me unshocked.

The Florida mom who sought to ban Amanda Gorman’s poem says she’s sorry for promoting the Protocols of the Elders of Zion
https://www.jta.org/2023/05/24/united-s ... rs-of-zion

Months before a Miami-area mother persuaded a local school to restrict access to an Amanda Gorman poem, she was posting antisemitic memes on her Facebook page.

[snip]

Salinas also petitioned the school to restrict children’s books about the Black poet Langston Hughes and about Black and Cuban history. After a committee reviewed her challenges, the Miami-Dade County school district opted to restrict all but one book about Cuba from grades K-5, while leaving them available to middle school students.

Salinas challenged the Gorman poem — which she says she hasn’t read in its entirety — on the grounds that it contains “indirect hate messages.” The review committee said it “erred on the side of caution” in deciding to limit students’ access.

[snip]

Salinas’ post about the Protocols included a list of steps depicting how “Jewish Zionists” would achieve world domination. The graphic included stages such as “Place our agents and helpers everywhere,” “Replace royal rule with socialist rule, then communism, then despotism,” and “Sacrifice people (including Jews sometimes) when necessary.”

[snip]

Salinas’ Facebook feed reflects the kinds of right-wing memes that continue to circulate widely, although she told JTA that she did not post everything on it herself. Miami Against Fascism also shared video of Salinas with the Proud Boys, a far-right group with ties to antisemitic activists, as well as a video of her attending a school board protest last year with Moms For Liberty, a “parents’ rights” group active in pushing for book removals across the country. Such groups have been instrumental in leveraging laws signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that enable parents to challenge the presence of any book in school libraries. In some instances, those challenges have led to the removal of books about the Holocaust and Jewish culture.

Quit talking down to people as if you are some sort of scholar. Everyone here knows all about the protocols and Henry Ford. In fact I probably know more about it than you because cars of one of my passions.

Now how about a link showing the gop supports the protocols. Be careful you don't accidentally link to any members of the squad as they are all anti Israel and in many people's opinions anti Semitic

You don’t know that they had to pull a speaker from the GOP National Convention? https://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-anti ... 30575.html

Lots more if you google the protocols and QAnon and Republican Party.

After all, it’s your own MTG that spews about “Jewish Space Lasers”. You need to start watching the ADL website again. But you don’t like them anymore, do you?

My thing is more the history of media, and I can tell you stories that are every bit as hair-raising as those from the auto industry, but it all comes down to the same thing. People with financial advantages leverage these into greater control of the means of information.

Information is the new currency. It doesn't make the old currency obsolete, but it certainly changes things. Who among us ever dreamed that someday a 19 year old kid with problems getting dates could be as influential as a billionaire?

There was considerable interest, at one time, in keeping the new currency separate from the old one, but this eroded when the people with the old currency learned how to control the new currency.

Now we have Faux Nooz, and its many imitators, on the air. We have 9-year-old influencers online getting free tickets to shows they don't even understand. Soon we'll have chatbots which can't tell the difference between the conclusions of scholars and the feelings of children. These will be telling us what to think.

Not good.

This is what democracy looks like - parents speaking up - to politicians. Like Guv. dePutin.

Hundreds gather at Florida school board meeting over Disney movie controversy: 'Your policies are not protecting us from anything'
https://news.yahoo.com/hundreds-gather- ... 27830.html

Florida teachers and community members packed a Hernando County School Board meeting Tuesday amid national furor over an investigation into a fifth-grade teacher who showed a Disney movie in her classroom.

Jenna Barbee, a teacher at Winding Waters K-8, alleged earlier this month that Hernando County School Board member Shannon Rodriguez reported her to the Florida Department of Education for showing her students the 2022 movie "Strange World" – one of the first Disney films to have an openly LGBTQ+ character in a central role.

The school board and state department of education both opened an investigation into Barbee, who has argued that the Disney movie related to a class Earth science lesson and did not show sexually inappropriate content. The animated movie follows a family of explorers on an adventure to save a plant that is their society’s source of energy.

Hundreds of teachers, students, and community members crowded the school board's meeting Tuesday night to speak on the controversy and related state education policies, such as the Parental Rights in Education Act or what critics call the "Don't Say Gay" law.

Over 100 people registered to speak during public comment and many shared their concerns over the school district's high numbers of teacher vacancies, with one high school student saying teachers are "scared to say anything that will get them fired."

"You need to listen to us when we say that the rainbow in our classroom is not indoctrinating us, seeing two girls together in a Disney movie is not brainwashing us, and your policies are not protecting us from anything," another high school student said during the meeting.
