Mrs Carter has Dementia

She is 95 and anyone lucky enough to live that long is more than likely going to catch something.
My mother had dementia and spent about a decade in a nursing home. As sad as it was if you were going to list the various illnesses you are likely to catch in old age dementia is the least difficult.
So as sad as we are to hear about Mrs Carter's illness she lived a good life. Was a great wife and mother and never seemed to let her or President's Carter's success or celebrity go to her head.
One of our finest first lady's who is already missed.

She was a far classier act than Mrs. Trump.
Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
You have to interject politics and your personal hatred into every subject.
I believe there is a passage in the Bible which goes along the lines from the abundance of the heart speaketh the mouth.
How sad it must be to go through life so full of hate

You did so when you talked about her as a First Lady.
I don’t vote for hate. YOU DO. You vote to see me eliminated.
Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
Jimmy continues to survive while in hospice. You never know how long hospice care will last. They told me my Mom had about a year, wow, it seemed like she barely made it a few weeks.
It might be a mercy his wife has dementia now.
All in all, I wish them both a passing that is with as little pain as possible.

No, Joe, it's not. It's a horrible disease. But you must be proud of being so heartless.JoeMemphis wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 12:52 pm Sometimes Dementia is natures way of taking care of old folks.
Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
No, you don't. What you said is quite a bit different than what he said.
Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
My Mom largely escaped dementia. It was lung cancer that got her (though I was terrified COVID would get her first, but it didn't).
Dad was not so lucky. He had it in the last few years of his life, before eventually passing away from heart failure. Yeah, it's agonizing and painful, because you start to lose the person even before you physically lose them. Bit by bit.

Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
Actually if you are going to catch one if the maladies of old age dementia is far easier than the rest.
Cancer you are in constant pain and mental anguish. Arthritis and you are crippled and in pain. Heart disease and you have all mental abilities but can't do anything.
With dementia you don't even know you are sick. One time my mom fell down and hurt herself. She spent a week in the hospital . Me and the girls drove to Akron to take her back to her home. She thought she had just spent a week visiting relatives in West Virginia.
When she finally was bad enough to be put in the nursing home. She didn't know anything was wrong.
Dementia is only tough on the loved ones not the patient.

Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
In my experience, my mom contracted cancer at 79 and had to quit work. She lived with me for 9 months during which she had surgery and radiation treatments which weakened her significantly. She had been a nurse in a nursing facility where as she put it “took care of old people”. When it became apparent we could no longer care for her at home, the facility where she formerly worked called me and basically advised to bring her to them. She had trained most of the floor nurses. Bottomline, my mom never “wanted” to live in a facility. Dementia is common in such facilities as people are older and everyday is like the next. You loose your sense of time.Glennfs wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 8:33 pm Actually if you are going to catch one if the maladies of old age dementia is far easier than the rest.

With my mom, she and I lived in whatever time frame she woke up in that day. Sometimes, we were current. Sometimes we were in the 50’s. Some days I was her son. Other days I was her brother. I never corrected her but rather allowed her to live in whatever day and time she choose. So I didn’t really loose her. I just got to relive a lot of her memories with her. She didn’t want to be where she was so being in a mother place and time mentally IMO was natures way of helping her deal with the fact that her body was slowly failing her. So instead of her dwelling on the unpleasant realities, she spent her final days reliving more pleasant times. I was fortunate to be able to share those with her.
So yeah, sometimes dementia is natures way of taking care of old folks.
Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
It really depends on the situation and the person. With my stepmom's mother, who had been living with her brother, she started accusing the other family members of stealing her belongings and trying to harm her. They had to put her in a home because she kept screaming at them; they just didn't know what to do. If they don't recognize you all, they may not mistake you for someone else, but think you are a stranger, and start running away from you. And of course I know of many cases where the person wanders off and can't be located because they get lost and don't know how to get back home. This is why some families have to actually put a tracking device on the person.
I think sometimes the confusion and disorientation is making them suffer, too. How did they get in this room? What are they doing there? It's just that they are also losing the ability to express it anymore. In reality, it's hard for everybody. "Just my2c". From observation of my dad, and some other affected people.

I get it which is why I said “sometimes”. Whenever you deal with humans I guess you can expect different outcomes. If my mom had lived another year or two she might have had such experiences as you describe. Who knows?ProfX wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 9:13 am It really depends on the situation and the person. Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
Dad was first diagnosed with CNS lymphoma. Brain tumor. He was one of the few that survived that only to end up with colon cancer. By the time they found that it had already spread to his liver. At that point it was all over but the crying. We were able to give him his last wish. He died in his own bed. Fully alert to his demise which added a whole new level of pain to the whole ordeal.
Mom is 7 years into 4th stage renal failure. i am so hoping we can do for her that we did for Dad.
It's something i really don't like to think about anymore.

It is tough watching your parents get old. It was also some of the best times we had.bradman wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2023 9:00 pm Dad was first diagnosed with CNS lymphoma. Brain tumor. Re: Mrs Carter has Dementia
i remember towards the end. A doctor or nurse would ask him how he felt. He'd get a serious look on his face and very slowly raise his gloved index finger (Chemo made him cold) and say, with my fingers of course. If they asked about pain. He'd slowly turn that gloved finger to me and tell them, he's been a pain in my ass my whole life. At which time i'd pipe up and say, don't listen to the senile old bastard, he's losing his mind. The ones that laughed we liked the best.JoeMemphis wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2023 10:24 pm It is tough watching your parents get old. It was also some of the best times we had.
i dunno about the best of times, but in a odd way, they were definitely worth living.
