(CNN)Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina is stepping aside as chairman of the influential Senate Intelligence Committee while he's under investigation for stock trades he made ahead of the market downturn sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement Thursday that Burr "contacted me this morning to inform me of his decision to step aside as Chairman of the Intelligence Committee during the pendency of the investigation."

Top fugitive in Rwanda’s genocide arrested outside Paris

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — One of the most wanted fugitives in Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, a wealthy businessman accused of supplying machetes to killers and broadcasting propaganda urging mass slaughter, has been arrested outside Paris, authorities said Saturday.

Felicien Kabuga, who had a $5 million bounty on his head, had been accused of equipping militias in the genocide that killed more than 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus who tried to protect them.

Wisconsin Business Bans Wearing Masks After Stay-At-Home Order Overturned

A Wisconsin business owner banned the use of masks in her buildings Friday, after the state Supreme Court overturned the state's stay-at-home order.

Annie's Campground, near Gresham, Wisconsin, posted the new rule on the establishment's Facebook page: "Masks are NOT allowed in the buildings for safety sake. They are viewed as a robbery in progress and will be handled that way." The post goes on to list planned events and food items available to patrons for the May 15-17 weekend, before thanking patrons in its conclusion.

In filing deadline surprise, controversial state Rep. Matt Shea won’t seek reelection

Controversial Spokane Valley state Rep. Matt Shea, who was suspended from the House Republican caucus after an investigation concluded he had engaged in domestic terrorism, will not seek reelection this fall.

Shea did not file to run again for the Legislature as the candidate filing deadline for the August primary expired Friday afternoon, said Mike McLaughlin, elections manager for the Spokane County Auditor’s Office. Shea did, however, file to run as a Republican precinct committee officer.

Covid Curtain has obscured this whole Venezuelan op. Out here in the News Desert, we can't get much on it. What happened? All I can get is that some kind of coup d'etat failed, and as always the US is involved on some level.

Strikes me as Trump's version of the Bay of Pigs, which means even more half assed, poorly planned, and ridiculously executed than the original. Trump and Pompeo are saying they had nothing to do with it.

As usual, Guaido is also denying he had anything to do with it, and the American mercs are saying he paid.

This op was a spectacular failure, so it's become, as the saying goes, a very quick orphan. Nobody knows who gave birth to it.

Not a Maduro fan, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

That's the story I get too. Typical (and typically botched) US covert op, now no one wants anything to do with it. At least none of our people got killed in this political stunt, or at least I don't think they did. We're still pretty news-impaired here.

AT&T ANNOUNCES CLOSING OF DIRECTV LATIN AMERICA OPERATIONS IN VENEZUELA

Today, AT&T Inc.* announced that it has closed its DIRECTV Latin America operations in Venezuela, effective immediately. The U.S. government’s sanctions on Venezuela have prohibited the broadcast of Globovision and PDVSA’s channels, both of which are required under DIRECTV’s license to provide pay TV service in Venezuela.

Because it is impossible for AT&T’s DIRECTV unit to comply with the legal requirements of both countries, AT&T was forced to close its pay TV operations in Venezuela, a decision that was made by the company’s U.S. leadership team without any involvement or prior knowledge of the DIRECTV Venezuela team.

Pier 1 asks bankruptcy court to allow it to close all of its stores.
Pier 1 announced Tuesday that it's asking the bankruptcy court to cease its retail operations "as soon as reasonably possible." It blames temporary store closures caused by coronavirus and failing to find a buyer for the drastic decision.

The 58-year-old company said it analyzed alternative ways to remain in business, but liquidation was the best option.

"Ultimately, due to the combination of a challenging retail environment and the new reality and uncertainty of a post-Covid world, the company and its advisers determined that an orderly wind-down is the best way to maximize the value of Pier 1's assets," the company said in a press release.

Pier 1 has cut its store count in half since last year. It announced in February that it was closing around 450 stores, including all its locations in Canada. The company currently has more than 500 stores — down from 1,000 last year.

Attacks on Asian Americans are continuing as conservatives persist with conspiracy theories that the coronavirus is a Chinese form of bioterrorism. Such was the case when a white man spit on a couple walking in downtown Seattle.

According to King5.com, the Seattle Police Department’s Bias Crimes Unit is asking for help from the public at finding the man.

“The couple was walking near 3rd Avenue and Stewart Street around 4:15 p.m. on May 16 when the suspect, caught on video, can be seen shoving a man in the face, slapping at his face mask and knocking off his glasses,” said the report.
If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.

Feder: WIND's Amy Jacobson barred from governor's media briefings

A judge rejects a complaint from the owner of Trump-friendly One America News because reasonable viewers can recognize opinion.

Popular cable news networks are having a helluva day in court against libel suits. On Friday, hours after CNN scored a victory in Virginia, MSNBC took home its own triumph in California.

The best part of the story from your link is this:
The SLAPP victory for MSNBC and Maddow will also mean that OAN has to pay defendants' attorneys fees. Here, the defendants were represented by Gibson Dunn attorneys Ted Boutrous Jr., Scott Edelman, Nathaniel Bach, and Theane Kapur.

Hertz files for bankruptcy.
Hertz filed for bankruptcy Friday night, the latest victim of the sudden economic downturn sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The company has been renting cars since 1918, when it set up shop with a dozen Ford Model Ts, and has survived the Great Depression, the virtual halt of US auto production during World War II and numerous oil price shocks. By declaring bankruptcy, Hertz says it intends to stay in business while restructuring its debts and emerging a financially healthier company.
"The impact of Covid-19 on travel demand was sudden and dramatic, causing an abrupt decline in the company's revenue and future bookings," said the company's statement. It said while it too immediate action in response to the crisis, "uncertainty remains as to when revenue will return and when the used-car market will fully re-open for sales, which necessitated today's action."

My wife and her daughter and grands had paid in full for Carnival cruise for May, no refund yet. I think they are holding off so they can file bankruptcy and not return any money...in our case it is a lot.

But I fully expect them to fuck us.

At some point these bankruptcies will become less about fucking US and more about real problems for our economy. But if we go back to work too soon it will be worse later, not better.

My sister and her husband go on about 2-3 cruises each year and they had one planned for March and then it was cancelled. The got a great deal on the cruise because they're frequent guests on the cruise line. The cruise line cancelled their cruise giving them their entire payment back as well as giving them 50% off their next cruise. I forget which cruise line they're with but even through there weren't able to go they will be able to upgrade to a better stateroom (they like the ones with a balcony) on their next cruise.
