^ those old permanent wave things always remind me of the brain machines in 1950s SF movies.

Or Back to the Future (where he did visit Doc Brown in the 1950s).

Then there's Cerebro v. 1.0 (First Class is set in the early 60s).

It has a tape deck. How very high-tech.

I didn't even notice that, a reel to reel located where steam and grease from the stove top would splatter all over it.

That ad has a past context in my life. My little sister 7 or 8 years old saw that in the Sears Christmas catalog and she made sure everyone knew that was her hearts desire. Everyone else just saw plastic junk, and with accessories and shipping about $15 of what was back then very expensive plastic junk.

In inflation adjusted dollars that's at least a $100. I noticed that one someone who is selling one at e-bay wants something like $75.

She was still crushed two years and several melt downs over it later. What she got that year was a foot locker sized pile of patterns, a couple hundred made and not yet completely made Barbie outfits, and the materials to make a couple hundred more outfits for Barbie.

Some old lady who was a nutter about it had accumulated it, then died, and my dad found it at flea market or auction. But nOO she wanted that Barbie kitchen.

Not just patent medicines. The Pan American Coffee Bureau has a great series of ads from the depression era in which coffee is said to be good for the national morale and efficiency at work. Then in WWII they advertised that Our Boys In Uniform drank it.

Yeah, I've been going through these all morning.

Interesting which ones have been redacted, or so far that I've seen.

BTW, it seems obvious to me going through that ad that the blurb was written by someone for whom English was not their first language. Very kind of subtle, but obvious, grammatical errors.

Of course, I'm guessing I was not the target demographic. :D

Yes, that's the same thing that tipped me that the twitter blitz was not real people's opinions. They never quite got English right. At first, well we knew a lot of drumpfoids weren't exactly grammarians. Soon, though, it got too obvious and repeatable to be just some clowns who couldn't write.

A lot of the ads I went through, the majority in fact, were designed to sow discord. Psyops 101: divide and conquer. They came in on both sides of issues, and just tried to get people stirred up. There was an enormous blitz regarding #BLM, as one of many examples. And everything looks like crude agitprop. They weren't even all that good at it. I can see where they'd want to avoid slickness and blend in as normal net chatter, but it was a C effort at best. The A effort would be some of what the British did in WWII. Brilliant.
