Apple Just Killed the Password—for Real This Time

YOUR PASSWORDS ARE terrible. Year after year, the most popular passwords leaked in data breaches are 123456, 123456789, and 12345—‘qwerty’ and ‘password’ come close behind—and using these weak passwords leaves you vulnerable to all sorts of hacking. Weak and repeated passwords are one of the most significant risks to your online life.

For years, we’ve been promised a more secure, password-free future, but it seems like 2022 will actually be the year that millions of people start to move away from passwords. At Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference yesterday, the company announced it will launch passwordless logins across Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs around September of this year. Instead of using passwords, you will be able to log in to websites and apps using “Passkeys” with iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. It’s the first major real-world shift to password elimination.

More info...I cant read the whole article but found other info.

If only there was a way to do passwords with your retina, i.e. no password just your eyes opening all sites. I hear that iPhone 12 and 13 you can get on without taking your mask off, I still have 11 due to my need for 4G for my extender but I will get new phone soon.
I sigh in your general direction.

The fingerprint reader on my phone is broken, I'm left with using my passcode to get into my phone.

It might be time to replace it, the battery doesn't last a day, and I just replaced the battery. Sure, it was one of those third-party batteries but it should still last longer than that. Yet, it still does what I need it to do. (It's a Pixel 3)

So long, Internet Explorer. The browser retires today

SAN FRANCISCO – Internet Explorer is finally headed out to pasture.

As of Wednesday, Microsoft will no longer support the once-dominant browser that legions of web surfers loved to hate — and a few still claim to adore. The 27-year-old application now joins BlackBerry phones, dial-up modems and Palm Pilots in the dustbin of tech history.

SpaceX Fires Employees Involved in Letter Critical of Elon Musk, Company - WSJ
Some employees at the company recently wrote a letter that called Mr. Musk’s public statements and behavior, particularly during the past several weeks, embarrassing and distracting. The letter asked SpaceX management to publicly separate the company from Mr. Musk’s personal brand, and to take steps to address what it said was a gap between SpaceX’s stated values and its current systems and company culture.

AT&T, Verizon Agree To Extend Airport Signal Mitigation Measures

The Federal Aviation Administration and key C-Band stakeholders AT&T and Verizon have agreed on a glide path to protecting sensitive aviation systems while boosting 5G service around "certain airports." AT&T and Verizon have also agreed to extend current interference mitigation efforts for another year.

The FCC cleared AT&T and Verizon to start rolling out service in the C-Band after they paid billions for the privilege, but the companies agreed to hold off back in November after the FCC put out a bulletin advising pilots, aircraft owners, manufacturers and others on the potential impact of 5G flexible use operations in the C-band on radio altimeters (RAs), which gauge how close a plane is to terrain.

Sonos CEO Patrick Spence Sounds Off About Big Tech Behaving Badly

Before its August recess, the U.S. Senate may vote on a bill that seeks to restrain anticompetitive behavior by the likes of Amazon, Google, Meta and other tech giants. Sonos chief executive Patrick Spence has pushed hard for the measure, which would protect the maker of premium sound systems and other smaller businesses.

The legislation will stop dominant players “from being able to simply leverage their power and balance sheets to destroy competition,’’ says Spence, a tech-industry veteran known for sounding off about Big Tech.

Streaming surpasses cable as top way to consume TV

Streaming has officially topped cable as the most popular method by which Americans consume television content, according to new data from Nielsen.

Why it matters: Just as cable's victory over broadcast ushered in waves of change to U.S. media, streaming's rise will continue to bring new businesses and cultural forces to the fore.

T-Mobile Agrees to Drop Home Internet Price Claim

An advertising self-regulatory body has told T-Mobile's home internet service it should stop making the implied claim in its TV commercial that consumers can save 50% over the price of cable broadband and other home internet competitors and T-Mobile has agreed, though says it does not agree with the National Advertising Division (NAD) of BBB National Programs' conclusion the claim is off base.

NAD said it had determined that the “Up to 50%” savings claim is unsupported because few consumers are paying the $105 a month that T-Mobile uses as its basis for comparison from the FCC’s benchmark rates and that the benchmark, rather than an average price but a public policy metric "set by the FCC to ensure equitable pricing for rural areas."

What the nooz doesn't say is that the latest Microsoft updates have changed the way the microphone is handled. A lot of apps that don't use the mike might still turn it on just because that's how the op-system handles sound inputs now even if it's at line level. If you've blocked mike access in the settings it will break these apps. There's no off by default, on when desired.

I don't have a workaround for this yet, so it's just a heads-up.

Google blocks Truth Social from the Play Store — Will Apple be next?

Google’s decision to block the Truth Social app’s launch on the Play Store over content moderation issues raises the question as to why Apple hasn’t taken similar action over the iOS version of the app that’s been live on the App Store since February. According to a report by Axios, Google found numerous posts that violated its Play Store content policies, blocking the app’s path to go live on its platform. But some of these same types of posts appear to be available on the iOS app, TechCrunch found.

This could trigger a re-review of Truth Social’s iOS app at some point, as both Apple’s and Google’s policies are largely aligned in terms of how apps with user-generated content must moderate their content.

FCC Won't Collect Fees from Big Tech

The FCC has decided not to tap the big pockets of Big Tech to help pay for its ongoing operations.

That came in a report and order Friday (Sept. 2) adopting a fee schedule to collect $381,950,000 in regulatory fees, which Congress requires, for FY 2022.

Klobuchar pulls vote on bipartisan tech bill, says agreement ‘blown up’ by Cruz amendment

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) asked to pull a committee vote on a bill aimed at giving news outlets the ability to negotiate collectively with tech platforms after she said an adopted amendment offered by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) impeded the bipartisan agreement senators reached ahead of the Thursday meeting.

Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee were slated to vote on a revised version of the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, but Klobuchar asked to hold it after Cruz’s amendment was adopted by a one-vote margin by the Republicans on the committee.

TikTok challenge spurs rise in thefts of Kia, Hyundai cars

A dangerous challenge spreading on TikTok and other social media platforms has car owners and police departments on alert across the country — challenging young teens to steal certain cars off the street using a USB cord.

The target? Certain makes and models of 2010-2021 Kia and Hyundai vehicles that use a mechanical key, not a key fob and push-button to start the car. Investigators tell CNBC the trend started last year and the number of cars being stolen is continuing to surge across the country.

FCC OIG: Fraud in Broadband Subsidy Program Is Big Problem

The FCC has identified hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraud connected to one of the broadband subsidy programs the government has put billions of dollars into, and says there may be more where that came from.

According to the FCC Office of Inspector General (OIG), some providers of Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) services--it did not name names--have applied for money to serve multiple households simultaneously based on the same eligible user, which is not allowed under the program.

Lot of fascinating stuff going on in sci-tech news ... fusion power seems closer with recent experiments, the Jetsons seem finally able to get flying cars which are appearing on the market, James Webb telescope found nearby exoplanets that look earth like and have water ... life?

And now this.

[from Twitter]
Atlantic@atlantic.com
We've managed to produce at least one basic need of future human missions to Mars: A toaster-size machine has gotten quite good at making breathable oxygen out of the alien atmosphere, @marinakoren reports.

Just Like That, We’re Making Oxygen on Mars
A small experiment on a NASA rover is tinkering with the alien atmosphere.
[end]

Now, before Elon Musk explodulates about terraforming Mars ... the aliens did not leave behind any tech for us (unlike Totall Recall) :D , and just bear in mind it didn't work so well in Red Planet ... scaling this up ... well it's the same problem with fusion, basically. Not going to be blue skies on Mars for a while. :|

But baby steps, folks.
