Big tech critic to take key FCC role

A leading critic of Big Tech will take the top legal position at a key agency that could target Google, Meta, and their rivals.

Adam Candeub, an architect of a late effort in Trump’s first term to revoke legal protections for social media, will be general counsel of the Federal Communications Commission, its chairman, Brendan Carr, confirmed in an email to Semafor.

X is blocking links to Signal, a secure messaging platform used by federal workers

Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) is blocking links to Signal.me, a URL shortener used by the private messaging app Signal that allows users to send out a link that’s used to contact them directly through the service. The blocks, which impact direct messages, public posts, and profile pages, were first spotted by the blog Disruptionist.

The change comes as DOGE (the Department of Government Efficiency) takes aim at federal agencies, including NASA and the Department of Education, leaving workers turning to Signal’s encrypted messaging platform to securely share information and blow the whistle on potentially harmful activity.

They need encryption/decryption software that exists on the machines, not the remote site. I'm sure that's impractical so I suggest that they don't use their work computers to discuss this sort of thing. There must be a way to do it with cell phones.

US demands EU antitrust chief clarify rules reining in Big Tech

BRUSSELS, Feb 23 (Reuters) - U.S. House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan on Sunday demanded EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera clarify how she enforces the European Union's rules reining in Big Tech, saying they appear to target U.S. companies.

The request came two days after U.S. President Donald Trump signed a memorandum warning that his administration would scrutinise the EU's Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act "that dictate how American companies interact with consumers in the European Union".

I'll bet Zuckerberg & Musk won't give a damn if Carr controls their sites but for the others i'm truly sorry

FCC Chair Brendan Carr Wants More Control Over Social Media

In his short time as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr has been no stranger to using his power against disfavored entities. The chairman's targets have primarily included broadcast networks and social media companies.

Recently, Carr revealed a fundamental misunderstanding about one of the most important laws governing the internet and social media.

Why he doesn't like broadcast networks when all of them (even MSNBC) are scared shitless of Trump? They're doing everything the oligarchs want them to do.

Danish PO will stop handling letters

BBC:

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckg8jllq283o
Denmark's state-run postal service, PostNord, is to end all letter deliveries at the end of 2025, citing a 90% decline in letter volumes since the start of the century.

The decision brings to an end 400 years of the company's letter service. Denmark's 1,500 post boxes will start to disappear from the start of June.

[...]

Letter numbers have fallen since the start of the century from 1.4 billion to 110 million last year.

Congress Targets Alphabet Over Censorship Claims-What It Means for Tech Regulation

House Republicans have subpoenaed Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) as part of an investigation into alleged censorship under the Biden-Harris Administration. The House Judiciary Committee, led by Ohio Republican Jim Jordan, is demanding documents related to potential government influence on content moderation.

Jordan's letter to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai claims that YouTube was directly involved in the federal government's censorship regime. He also compared Alphabet to Meta (NASDAQ:META), which admitted past compliance with government requests and later revised its policies.

EU threatens domination over US big tech in response to tariffs

The European Union is considering new measures to target US services exports, including steps that could hit Big Tech companies. The bloc’s decision comes after Washington slapped a 25 percent tariff on the car industry and hinted at further measures next week.

One EU diplomat told FT, “The Americans think that they are the ones with escalation dominance [in the trade war], but we also have the ability to do that,” stressing that the ultimate goal is to de-escalate tensions and reach a comprehensive trade deal.

Retaliatory tariffs are part of the game, and that's why it's best not to play that game at all. Weapons that blow up in your face are only used by fools and the supremely unqualified. That's why the markets are tanking. People with real money at risk know what a fool's errand this whole thing is. It's likely some bad idea Elon Musk had. He doesn't have to worry about money at all. Even if he loses his shirt, NASA will bail him out.

OpenAI countersues Elon Musk in bitter legal battle

OpenAI countersued Elon Musk on Wednesday, arguing in its lawsuit that he "could not tolerate seeing" the company's success and that he sought to build a direct competitor "not for humanity" but for himself.

The big picture: It's the latest in a high profile legal battle pitting the AI revolution's standard-bearing company against the tech billionaire who helped found it.

So far the "revolution" consists of web-based AI chatboxes that spout half-truths concocted from semi-true information already posted to the net. Oh, and drones that can kill people. Very big in Ukraine.

Normal Reality Prediction - The Courts rule for The FTC Current Reality Prediction - The Courts rule Zucks did nothing wrong & gets to keep his technology toys doing more harm

FTC v. Meta live: Mark Zuckerberg takes the stand

The long-awaited antitrust trial between Meta and the Federal Trade Commission kicked off on April 14th. Over about two months, DC District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg is hearing arguments about whether then-Facebook illegally monopolized the market for “personal social networking services” through its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.

The FTC first brought the case in late 2020. While it was initially thrown out by the judge, he let an amended version move forward after the government beefed up details about why it thinks Meta is a monopoly. This phase of the trial will help the judge determine if Meta is liable for breaking antitrust law. If he finds that to be true, he’ll later rule on how those harms should be remedied. The FTC is pushing for Instagram and WhatsApp should be spun off.

The courts can't even stop immigrants from being disappeared. Trump says gfy when they attempt habeas corpus, and the country has no recourse short of impeachment. That recourse is not possible in this system.

This country is about to face its biggest day of reckoning since the south seceded. This time the president seceded. Stockpile food and get ready for street confrontations.

Poll: As Americans form views on AI, they're divided on its role in school and everyday life

Americans are almost evenly split on several questions measuring their views on artificial intelligence, with no meaningful differences based on age and partisanship, according to the NBC News Decision Desk Poll powered by SurveyMonkey.

The split views on AI use and AI’s impact on the future come as elected officials in Washington have largely left AI companies untouched, introducing few regulations that constrain them.

Why Big Tech Turned Against Democrats — and Democracy

In just 6 short months under Donald Trump, federal funding for science has been slashed and there are clear attempts to censor research. Our great research universities are under assault, and foreign scholars are being denied visas. Many are foregoing coming to America for fear they may be deported or even arrested. We have a health secretary who isn’t just anti-vaccine — he reportedly doesn’t accept the germ theory of disease, preferring the “miasma theory” that was discredited by Louis Pasteur in the 19th century. The acting head of FEMA said he wasn’t aware that the US had a hurricane season.

One of the ironies of this great leap backward is that it was made possible in part by a hard turn toward Trump among technology billionaires — men who surely imagine that they are leading us into a glorious future, not into a latter-day Dark Age.

Federal judge denies OpenAI bid to keep deleting data amid Tribune copyright lawsuit

A federal judge has upheld a ruling directing OpenAI to preserve logs and data slated for deletion after news outlets including the Chicago Tribune suing the technology giant accused the company of hiding evidence of copyright infringement.

The new ruling, issued Thursday in Manhattan Federal Court, denied the company’s objection to an earlier court order directing OpenAI to keep any data used to train its artificial intelligence bots — logs which plaintiffs say may contain details of widespread content piracy.

TikTok Is Reportedly Developing a US-Only Version of the App

We have yet another wrinkle in the ongoing TikTok-U.S. saga.

According to a new report from The Information, TikTok is in the midst of developing a new U.S.-only version of the app, as it closes in on a deal with a U.S. partner, in line with the requirements of the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.”

Increased Shark Sightings Prompt Drone Surveillance and Beach Closures in NYC's Rockaway Beach

As New Yorkers flock to the beach for summer fun, some unexpected guests have been making quite a splash in the headlines. Shark sightings have seen a notable uptick in frequency at spots like Rockaway Beach, where city-operated drones have spotted our finned friends on a record number of occasions. According to information released by the parks department and reported by Gothamist, since July 1, sharks have been detected by these high-flying eyes nine times, leading to a cumulative 12 hours of beach closure.

This shark surveillance uptick isn't necessarily because the sharks have suddenly decided to visit the Rockaways en masse. The increased presence is largely thanks to more drones patrolling the skies, as experts and city officials have noted in recent statements. "The people flying these drones are now seeing what we've known and what we've been observing on these whale watching boats for a long time, is a really vibrant ecosystem just off the shore of New York City," Chris St. Lawrence, researcher with Gotham Whale, told Gothamist. The Department of Emergency Management is currently deploying four or more drone teams during the busiest beach days, highlights a report from Aries Dela Cruz, an official with the city's emergency management office.

The GOP has taken over YouTube & Google or they've been taken them over for years

YouTube’s ‘Trending’ section is about to disappear

YouTube is preparing to sunset the Trending section that shows users which videos are currently going viral on the platform. The Trending page and Trending Now list will be removed within the “next couple of weeks,” according to YouTube, with the platform shifting its attention toward expanding YouTube Charts, which rank top-performing content.

YouTube is directing users to lean on personalized recommendations and YouTube Charts to explore new videos ahead of the Trending page’s removal. YouTube Charts allow users to see the most popular content for specific categories, which currently includes music videos, podcasts, and movie trailers. YouTube says that it will add more content category charts “over time” and that trending gaming videos can still be found under the Gaming Explore page in the meantime.
