Supreme Court rejects appeal over Michigan's ban on straight-party voting

Quote:
The U.S. Supreme Court won't intervene in a dispute over Michigan's ban on straight-party voting.

The court turned down an appeal Friday, which means the ban will go into effect in the November election. Voters can't use a single mark to quickly pick all candidates of a single party.

A Detroit federal judge said the ban violated the rights of black voters. But an appeals court this week suspended that decision and said the ruling likely will be overturned.
The Supreme Court rejected an appeal, although justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg wanted to hear it..................

But of course

RNC chairwoman: ‘Democrats have the energy right now’

Republican National Committee (RNC) chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said Sunday that Democrats have an advantage in voter enthusiasm heading in to November's midterms.

Speaking on AM 970 The Answer, McDaniel told host John Catsimatidis that Democrats are being bolstered by "energy" stemming from their unsuccessful bid to maintain control of the White House in 2016.

New York Democrats Under Fire For Claiming Cynthia Nixon Is Soft On Anti-Semitism

The New York Democratic Party has sent out a campaign mailer arguing that Jewish voters “can’t take a chance” on Cynthia Nixon, a progressive candidate challenging incumbent Andrew Cuomo in Thursday’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, because she can’t be trusted to stand up to anti-Semitism.

“With anti-Semitism and bigotry on the rise,” Jews shouldn’t back “inexperienced Cynthia Nixon, who won’t stand strong for our Jewish communities,” the mailer says.

I have a suspicion that charge is unfounded. Even if it isn't completely unfounded it is more than likely exaggerated and over blown.

Looking at it with a dim view that mailer in and of itself appears to demonstrates that bigotry is on the rise. The bigotry on the rise half of that charge against Nixon. It shows the accuser using the anti-Semitism half of his charge to demonstrate that bigotry is indeed on the rise, he's showing us him doing it.

Both halves used there's nothing left. :|

It's like that snake eating its own tail, it completely consumes itself while demonstrating that bigotry is on the rise.

Galvin orders recount in 3rd Congressional District Democratic primary

The recount is on.

Secretary of State William Galvin Monday afternoon ordered a district-wide recount in the 3rd Congressional District Democratic primary.

Democratic candidate Dan Koh, who came in second in the race, filed a sufficient number of signatures to trigger the recount, Galvin's office said in a statement.

Exclusive: Black executives' PAC backs 14 candidates in quest to boost economic might

WASHINGTON – A new political organization launched by African-American business executives is expanding quickly and will endorse 14 House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates on Monday, as it seeks to push black economic issues to the forefront of November’s midterm elections.

The Black Economic Alliance is putting its financial clout and connections behind candidates in high-profile races. That includes Democrat Mike Espy, the former congressman and U.S. agriculture secretary now in a three-way battle for a U.S. Senate seat from Mississippi, the state with the highest percentage of African-American residents in the nation.

Inside the progressive movement roiling the Democratic Party

MIAMI (Reuters) - In another year, Donna Shalala might have had an easy ride to Washington.

Running to become a first-time congresswoman in a Miami seat at age 77, Shalala has long been a member of the Democratic Party elite, with a deep resume that includes supervising U.S. health policy for former President Bill Clinton. Her slogan, printed on the back of her staff’s t-shirts, could have come from Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign playbook: “Ready on Day One.”

Afghan refugee wins New Hampshire statehouse primary

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A 27-year-old Afghan refugee has ousted a four-term incumbent in the Democratic primary for a seat in the New Hampshire legislature.

The Concord Monitor reports that Safiya Wazir beat District 17 State Rep. Dick Patten, who argued her refugee background would hurt her campaign. But Wazir pulled out Tuesday's primary victory by highlighting her years of community activism and dedication to education and family issues.

[from cited article]
Even Shalala is claiming the label, calling herself a “pragmatic progressive.” She said she supports a version of “Medicare for All,” allowing people of all ages the option to buy into an improved model of the government program currently available to older Americans, or keep private insurance. The idea would have seemed a liberal pipe dream in the 1990s, when she helped lead Clinton’s doomed effort to pass healthcare reform.

“I’m just pragmatic, because I have run a health care system and because I have seen politics at the national level,” she said. “It doesn’t mean that I am not a progressive or don’t want to see the system evolve. … But we have to get there.”

[snip][end]

I think I've seen that label before. :D

Ahhh. So, Donna, you're saying it's not enough to just spout vague pipe dreams ... we need to actually enact actual programs that gets stuff done? Focus on things that can be shown to ACTUALLY WORK to make peoples' lives better?

Say it ain't so. ;)

I understand you recently ran a local university.

I'm not in her district, I'm stuck with a freakin' Diaz-Balart who is NOT retiring, unfortunately, but I did see her at the local event focusing on the Trump separation policy. Also met two of her staffers.

Charles Fall wins Democratic primary for North Shore Assembly

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Charles Fall is the victor in the Democratic primary, beating out two competitors in an open race for the North Shore Assembly seat on Thursday.

NEW: WPRI Called Wrong Winner in Cumberland Democratic Mayoral Primary

Election night races are not limited to political candidates.
The race among the media to be first to call the winner of a contest before it's official is a gamble -- and sometimes it doesn't pay off.

Black female Democrats call for changes in party

WASHINGTON (AP) — Insurgent Democratic women running for Congress are pushing the party to rethink its approach to politics if they retake control of Capitol Hill in the fall.

At the annual meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus Friday, black female candidates who prevailed in primaries over established incumbents said it's time for a conversation about how the party is structured. They expressed frustration that the party is tilted against rising politicians — especially those of color — and argued that if Democrats flip the House in November, it would be the result of organization and turnout amount black voters, particularly women.

Contractors sue non-partisan group No Labels

The non-partisan political group No Labels, and a number of affiliated super PACs, is facing a lawsuit from contractors who say they were stiffed for millions of dollars of work in the 2018 cycle, let go in favor of political strategists with ties to the group's president, Nancy Jacobson -- and her husband, Mark Penn.

In the complaint, which was filed in the Supreme Court of New York this week, strategists Matthew Kalmans and Sacha Samotin say that their firm, Applecart, helped conceive No Labels' current strategy of creating PACs that can invest in primaries and general elections to boost centrist candidates; they seek $3.7 million in damages, saying that money they were owed was shunted away from them, in breach of contract.

Flores defeats Gallego in Senate District 19

Voters elected political newcomer Pete Flores to the Texas Senate on Tuesday, flipping a Democratic district red for the first time in 139 years and further bolstering Republicans’ supermajority in the chamber ahead of the November elections.

A retired game warden, Flores defeated former state and U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego for the Senate District 19 seat after receiving backing from some of the state’s most prominent politicians, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and U.S. Sens John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.

Oh Dear, I thought I would look political newcomer Pete Flores up. I saw a photo of him. Then I thought to add the word sex to the Google quire, which is four sheets of paper or parchment folded to form eight leaves, as in medieval manuscripts. I couldn't find the word I was looking for. :|

When I added the word sex I discovered there are quite a few sex offenders named Pete Flores spread out across the US.

Georgia district is ordered to redo primary election after voting errors

(CNN) A judge said he will order a Georgia Legislature district to redo a primary election between two Republicans because errors in voter data called the results into question.

The announcement came in response to a lawsuit filed by state Rep. Dan Gasaway that challenged the legitimacy of the election he lost by 67 votes to businessman Chris Erwin in May. Following his loss, Gasaway personally examined voter rolls and determined that "cross-contamination" in his district's voter information had led to at least 67 people voting in the wrong district, according to his lawsuit.
