Posting from the Emergency Room!

Post by gounion »

Old man pretending he’s a kid again!

Decided I REALLY wanted to return that shot in pickle ball a couple of hours ago. Didn’t make it, fell down on the wooden court and landed on my forearm. A little cut and a big ‘ole goose egg! Full mobility in my arm without pain,I kept playing for another half hour. But the trainers at the gym said they hadn’t seen anything swell up that fast before. Called the nurse through my insurance, and they said to have it looked at.

Doc said it’s a hematoma, I’d broke a blood vessel and it bled in. Took X-rays, bone is fine. They’re wrapping it, I need to ice it. He said I could even go back to lifting tomorrow. He said I’m going to get a big ‘ole multicolor bruise though!

This won’t slow me down a bit! I need to keep reminding myself not to dive for those again, let them go!

I still play basketball a couple times a week. Much more with experience and leverage than what speed and quickness I have left.

One of my somewhat regular nightmares involves getting ready to dunk a basketball with my feet at rim level then realizing that what goes up must come down. Thankfully, I always wake up before hitting the floor and exploding my lower extremities.

I now understand why dad used to cringe at some of the heights I used to jump from.

You're not getting older, you're getting....

Naw, you're getting just older!

I used to run being able to do 5 - 7 mile distances (my best was 11 miles) but I gave that up as I got older mainly to protect my knees. I would've liked to continue playing volleyball but it would be hard for me to find a team that would take a 50-plus old player even though I was still a starter on our medical group's volleyball team at age 54.

I limit my competitive sports to bowling which is both a competitive and social sport. Like golf, bowling can be a frustrating game where you're hot in one game and cold in another game. Last Thursday, my fist two games were 171 and 178, well below average, and then I shot up to 256 for a 605 series. Another guy on my team, about seven years younger than me, did really bad on the first two games and on the third game he shot a 234.

Anyway, I hope you heal fast and get back out on the court.

It was. I'm left handed. But I had full mobility all along yesterday. And it doesn't bother me this morning. But I am going to be more careful. I don't want an injury to derail things.

Shitty man. How long was your emergency wait?

If it’s any consolation, I dropped a 30 pound dumbbell on my middle finger yesterday morning right on the nail. Was putting it down not realizing my left hand was hovering over another piece of equipment and not the floor. It’s still throbbing and turning black in the middle. Ah well. Now I know better. But no playing guitar for a few days.

YEOUCH! Sorry to hear, dude! Yeah, I kidded them at the gym that as the safety guy at work back in the day, there's all kinds of danger at a gym. OSHA would freak!

As for the wait - none at all. It's a nightmare at our main hospital emergency room, we've waited 14 hours. But they built a new neighborhood emergency room - same hospital - right near our home. It's a full emergency room, too, but they rarely take ambulance patients. So, I walked in and was done in just over an hour, X-rays and all.

Ah, so you had a problem with a gravity storm.

Glad it wasn’t very serious. I have had enough of hospitals and ERs with my bowel obstruction issues. Also glad that it was quick with the ER.

Good to hear your are doing OK. Us old folks gotta remember that parts don’t work quite as well as they used to.

Thanks. But further news, it DID slow me down. Wednesday the swelling had gone down after taking off the wrap. I went to work out, and my arm immediately swelled up big time, as bad as the day before. I ended my workout and went to see my doctor. I can't do any weightlifting with my arm until the Monday after Thanksgiving. She said the soft tissue had to heal. I can lift with my legs, but the arms can't be involved. I can also do cardio, so I'm going to double down on that. Ah well.

I'm debating whether to play pickleball again or not. A fall, if I break something, could put me out for longer. I've never broken a bone in my life - actually, I've never really had any kind of sports injury.

I'd suggest you rest until the Monday after Thanksgiving or when your doctor tells you you can resume exercising. That means no pickle ball. You've heard the old song about the foot bone connected to the leg bone; the leg bone connected to the knee bone; etc.. The same goes for muscles and ligaments and one of the things your arm does in addition to lifting is helping you to keep your balance when exercising or playing sports. An injured arm means it won't move as well as it did before and could cause you to lose your balance further injuring the arm.

Play it safe and rest. You've still got many years to go to the gym and/or play pickle ball so don't blow it by going back to normal activities.
