It remains a stain on a supposedly free nation that we basically drove a learned and committed public health leader into hiding for life.

I don't really blame any group of people. As a media type, I tend to blame the Internet. It needs some serious cleaning up. We tried free speech on the net, it was a good idea when no one but geeks who had taken a computer class in college were on it, but it didn't play in the sticks.

Bullshit.

Republican candidates downplay past anti-abortion stances ahead of 2024 election

Republican candidates in close races across the country who once fervently backed severe abortion restrictions are shifting how they talk about the issue.

On social media, in public comments and in talking points on their websites, candidates are shying away from past hard-line positions and softening their stances. In some cases, the changes have been overt, with candidates reversing course on supporting outright bans on abortion or even denying they ever opposed it.

Exactly, prior to the internet the extremist of all stripes couldn't find one another. Today they can and band together.
That is what has given us people like Trump and Sanders rising to power.
Had Dennis Kucinich been a congressman in today's world he would be an icon and parry leader. Instead he was never given any plum assignments nor made a committee chairman.
After the last census the democratic party in Ohio volunteered to give up his seat.

Without the internet Trump probably doesn't run if he does he would have finished 5th in a 4 man primary. But, his tough guy rhetoric and demeanor gives the illusion of power to those people who think Walker Texas Ranger is quality entertainment.

The human race simply wasn't ready for the internet. Rush Limbaugh at his peak had 6 million listeners a week, or 1.2 million a day. A drop in the bucket compared to how many wackos demagogues can collectively reach today.

Polical talk and debate has become like religion. With so many believing my beliefs are the only true way to heaven. The people getting rich from political talk are no different than radio preachers.

Just good old boys who set out to do good and did quite well.

Funny how you kept quiet about the people running against Trump. Well, except for JFK Jr, when he was running against Biden you pledged to change parties to vote for him. Now that he's an independent you are mum about him.

Your party is the party of the complete nuts. They've driven all the sane conservatives out of the party.

What would be nice is having an actual honest conversation about the upcoming election. But, anything said to you would be responded by you as you just want Trump to win and Biden to lose. Or the usual crap.

I saw polling from RCP that showed Biden’s approval numbers are under water in all but I believe 4 states. He is even 4 points in negative territory in California.

David Axlerod says Biden is being to prideful and needs to change his messaging.

There is another article I saw which says Biden’s approval numbers are at a 70 year low. He is even 6 points behind where Trump was at the same point in his presidency.

Now if the Republicans had any candidate other than Trump Biden would get smokes and probably pull an LBJ in an effort to give the party a chance.

Bur, people aren't going to flock to Trump. They might however stay home as many are disheartened by both candidates. Which could help Trump win another term.

While I am among the 65pct who don't believe Biden is doing a good job, I also believe Trump would be far worse. I personally believe that as Biden’s age difficulties get worse he will listen to his advisors and like Reagan in his lat two years coast to the finish line.

The problem is Biden’s advisors are liberals who while not extremist are pretty far left and definitely out of the mainstream.

You could flip a coin between the two Glenn. We are screwed either way (for different reasons). Neither man should be running. I plan to vote for the down ballot races in the hope that the legislature will act as a check on whichever of these two gets elected. We need to do a better job of selecting leaders. This isn’t a student government election.

Funny how neither of you spoke in favor of the Republicans that were running against Trump in the primaries. It’s almost like you didn’t want any of them to stand up to Dear Leader.

I’m not the one posting bullshit, Joe. You are. You can’t respond to my points. If you don’t support Trump, why didn’t you speak out for the people that ran against him?

Both you and Glenn try to pretend he doesn’t exist. That’s because you support him, but can’t defend what he does.

Like you pretended to support a women’s right to choose, right up until you proved you didn’t.

So you think if we don’t verbally speak for his opponent then we are defaulted to supporting him despite the many times we have voiced our opposition to him. That’s flawed thinking and flawed logic. There are lots of folks on this board who didn’t speak for any of those folks, are they Trump supporters. Silence on a matter isn’t agreement. That kind of logic is just plain stupid.

So how is what you just said add anything to the conversation?
I wrote a rather long post which I believe was well thought out and contained both facts and opinions.

Why is it you can't have a civil conversation

No, Glenn, it’s all about pretending Trump doesn’t exist and telling us why we shouldn’t vote for Joe Biden.

At long last, do you fucking realize that if not one votes for Joe Biden, then Donald Trump will be President?

That’s a FACT.

America has lots of problems and trump is surely one of them but obsessing constantly over trump while ignoring the rest of the problems is probably the biggest issue of the 2024 election. As Americans wallow in a pig pen of stupid over trump its problems grow and multiply. One group has the potential to shift the elections are the most ignored the most put upon and the least valued.

If trump wins its because Americans obsessed over him and ignored its many many problems that are already all consuming. Adress the problems of poverty and inequality and the insecurity that comes as a result of them and you address the problem of trump.

Pretending he doesn’t exist isn’t going to work. It’s either/or, MC.
