60 Years Ago The Came and Conquered America

Post by Number6 »

ON Feb 7, 1964 The Beatles landed in New York City for an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and rock-n-roll was changed forever. I remember that date well because my family lived in Trumbull, Connecticut about 50 miles from New York City, and there were a number of students from our high school who ditched school to see The Beatles arriving at the airport.

The impact The Beatles had was immediate introducing other British Invasion groups like The Rolling Stones, The Dave Clark Five, The Animals, The Hollies, Herman's Hermits, The Kinks, The Who, and many more to the U.S.. I've been a fan of The Beatles since they came to the U.S. and I have most of their albums. I still listen to their songs on SiriusXM Radio as well as the CDs and vinyl albums I converted to digital media. In fact, I made a CD of about 30 of their songs for my car on long trips.
I like their early albums the most like Meet the Beatles, Help, Introducing the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Yellow Submarine. Here are a few of my favorite songs from them:

It's hard to believe it has been 60 years but I still love their music. Maybe because I was a young teenager back then and their music had a significant impact on me but I do believe their music, especially their early years, will continue to find new fans.

One of my earliest memories was with my aunt and uncle in Crank's Drug Store at what had to be early 1964, seeing a cardboard cutout of the Beatles and "I want to hold your hand" playing loudly. I was very excited.

My older cousin bought the 45, which had "I saw her standing there" on the b-side, and played it over and over for me.

I also remember a few years later when he brought home the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band the day it was released, and played it over and over. I thought, "I've never heard anything like this!", not realizing at the time I wasn't old enough to have heard that much.

But it certainly was one of the most ground-breaking albums of all time.

Saw a pic of McCartney at the Super Bowl. White beard.

Now they have better instrumentation. One Taylor Swift concert in Seattle came in at magnitude 2.3.

I was in Las Vegas earlier this month for a bowling tournament at Southpoint Casino. Herman's Hermits were scheduled to play the day after I left. My timing on things like this always sucks. Herman's Hermits has always been one of favorite bands after the Beatles and it would have been fun to see them.
