Three explosions. No pompiers in sight. Oh, here they come. Too late.

I've been to Notre Dame Cathedral, not inside but just outside, and it's an impressive structure. Sad to see such an historic structure destroyed.

I posted by mistake here. I was in a hurry, and as you would think given that I would likely have been inside that building in a few weeks, I was somewhat distracted.

No bombs. The most plausible cause right now is that the wooden spire was undergoing extensive renovation inside a huge scaffold, and something that shouldn't have caught fire, caught fire. The roof was clad in some kind of metal, but they'd waited too long to restore it, and a lot of the wood was exposed. That's all we know.

I gave Notre-Dame a good looking over. The most visible change is that the roof and spire are gone. The towers in front are completely intact on the outside. So are all of the walls, though the two upper stained glass windows in the transept are gone. The other glass is intact, and has been covered up with some kind of protective material. The gaping void where the roof used to be is now covered with some kind of white tarp like material. This is will at least keep the rain out. It rains a lot in Paris this time of year.

The spire has vanished, but the scaffolding around its former location is still there. It is buckled, but standing. I would imagine that it's going to be a real pain getting it off safely.

Two large cranes are working on the site. The police have everything blocked off starting at the cathedral square and going all the way to the end of the Ile de la Cite where the bridge connects to the other island. People stand on the bridge and take photos.

No word on lead contamination in the area. The best view is from the river anyway.

Paris is pretty much open for business, with the only noticeable change due to the yellow vest movement being the closure of some streets and subways on Saturdays. In general, what you really notice is all the construction, which has led to traffic rivaling L.A..

As has been posted elsewhere, shortly after the Notre Dame fire, there were online postings accusing Muslims or Jews of starting the fire.

There's no evidence anyone started it intentionally as arson, especially given WHERE it started (unless either group did it with fire-spewing aerial drones), but that has never stopped people.

The fire started near the work site at the bottom of the spire and was due to an electrical problem likely caused by the construction work. A fire alarm went off in a timely manner, but reported the fire at the wrong location, so when people checked it out they saw nothing and suspected a computer malfunction. Presumably, some time soon after that, the nose knew.

They ruled arson out some weeks ago. That won't stop the foil-hat crowd or the religion-baiters, but facts remain facts whether or not people believe them.

Lead contamination on Ile de la Cite is serious enough that the schools there did not open on time. They are now being decontaminated.

The cause is definitely that some bozo working on the restoration messed up and burned the cathedral. And you thought you had a bad day.

It's not the first time one of these wooden roofs has burned. That's the reason Chartres now has a metal roof. That fire was in the 1800s, so they've had time to restore this cathedral to like-new condition. It has everything but that new cathedral smell.

Yes, that's why I've been following that part of it. That and the week or so I spent breathing/eating it.
