April 8, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

Post by Number6 »

Anyone going to watch the solar eclipse on Monday? The total eclipse will occur over a path of the U.S. and most other parts of the country will be able to see a partial eclipse. Weather permitting, it should be a specular sight. If you miss this one you can catch the next one on Aug 23, 2044.

Note, if you're going to view it, don't look directly at the sun without genuine solar eclipse glasses. Also, I'd advise you to keep your pets indoors so their eyes won't get damaged.

We're in the 90-some percentile of coverage, we'd have to drive several hours to get into the totality, and we're staying home. I changed my workout schedule to have the time off, and we did purchase glasses.

Having said that, forecast is currently cloudy with rain showers.

Are you in totality or just partial?

My sister told me this morning she received an email from Amazon stating the solar eclipse glasses she bought weren’t genuine and they would give her a full refund. She had bought them for some friends and had to email them telling them no to use them.

So, eclipses and earthquakes are messages from God that we must repent.

Any reason why we should take this party seriously as rational adults?

I am in the path of totality, but not by much. I could drive about 20 minutes south and be near the middle

I bought some glasses and a camera filter made by Celestron, so I'm assuming it's acceptable.

I'll take some pictures, but I'm not a great photographer and I'm quite positive that the internet will be chock full of pictures.

Of course, when these events happen it's most often cloudy. Currently, the forecast is a mix of sun and cloud.

Had MTG paid attention in her astronomy class, she'd know that earthquakes and eclipses often coincide due to tidal forces.

Bad timing on the eclipse. Had it happened two weeks ago, we'd have seen a truly historic corona, with huge solar eruptions blasting mass and energy off into space. Right now, though, the sun is the quietest that it's been in months. Still fun for those who got a sunny day for it, though.

Doesn't matter here, of course, since eclipses hate Southern California. They avoid it like a bad habit. There was an annular one once, a zillion years ago, but it rained that day. Nice and sunny today, but no eclipse.

The sun dropped about one f stop, about the only effect here. Sunny LA was a bit less sunny for a while.

It was cloudy until about the time when the partial started, by the time it was in totality it was a clear sky. It was quite a sight to see. The totality didn't last for long, but it was long enough to appreciate it. It got cold, dark, and quiet. The birds just shut up, which they rarely seem to do in this area. As soon as it started to brighten up again, the wound themselves back up.

The shadows of things were quite dark. Like the shadow of a powerline which, generally, doesn't generate much of a shadow

The sun, when it's mostly eclipsed becomes a bright white color.

Just before and after totality, the light looks artificial, like a fluorescent or led

My son went south, but it was cloudier down there so I'm glad I didn't leave home.

Tried to get pictures, camera wouldn't cooperate when trying to use the filter that came as part of my pack. I figured there would be plenty of pictures online anyway, I didn't need my own.

My file host seems to be having issues, but if it was up I'd post a picture of my how my cats reacted. If you can imagine two cats sleeping, that's pretty much what it looked like.

barely noticed a thing here. it got a bit darker with growing cloud cover which clearly blocked visuals. could see the colored ring
around the sun til the clouds then thickened and it looked the same no matter the direction.

whats the connection tween cloud cover and this block the sun event....clouds seem to have been most everywhere.

we didnt expect much here and got even less.

Actually, the Nooz kept telling us that sometimes the brief temperature drop makes some clouds go away. I wouldn't know for sure because eclipses avoid LA County like the bad neighborhood that it is.

I had moved my workouts this week to Tue-Thur-Sat instead of M-W-F because of the eclipse being during my workout time Monday.

Almost completely overcast. 2:03 central was the most we were going to get, about 85-90 percent. Got a teeeny-tiny break in the clouds at about 2:06 and we got to see it for 20 seconds or so. The sky didn’t darken to speak of.

MY wife said “I shaved my legs for this?” Which, she didn’t, but it was a funny line.

Here it looked like just after sunset and all the street lights came on briefly. I saw a couple of stars in the sky. It was the first time I had ever seen a total eclipse.

LA doesn't have solar eclipses. Never has been one in historical times, never will be. The predictions go centuries into the future, and none are scheduled, ever, AT ALL. Obviously the sun and moon understand that LA is not a nice place to visit.

My mother talked about a total eclipse in the Midwest when she was a kid. Even they got one. LA? Never, ever, not going to happen. There'd just be an earthquake during it anyway.

I was bowling when the eclipse happened so I didn't get to see in-person. Fortunately, we were on lanes 1 & 2 and on the wall next to lane 1 and behind the bowlers so we could easily watch and hear the news coverage of the eclipse.

I was glad for the eclipse because it too my mind off bowling. The team we were bowling against had a bowler I knew who was a very good bowler, 10 pins above my average, so I had to do well to counter his scores. I started with a 195 average and shot a 677 series for a 225 average. The other guy shot a 275 average also for a 225 average. Both teams ended up with two wins and two losses. By watching the eclipse, I didn't pay too much attention how he or his teammates were doing so when it was my turn there wasn't much self-imposed pressure on me.
