Original or Cover Songs
Original or Cover Songs
It's nor unusual for a singer or a group to play a song from another singer or group. Sometimes the cover song is better than the original and sometimes it's not. So what songs do you think are better than the original vice versa?
Desperado:
Eagles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aelpqWEBHR4
vs
The Carpenters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNqYkmZel_I
I've got to go with the Carpenters' version. Karen Carpenters beautiful voice makes the meaning of the song more meaningful.
Do You Love Me:
The Contours https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loHOhxsglKI
vs
The Dave Clark Five https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSiFoiHK_2k
As much as I love listening to The Dave Clark Five I think The Contours version makes it a better version. Their version is more lively and makes you want to dance or at least tap your feet.

Re: Original or Cover Songs
Okay, Six, I was surprised at this.
My FIRST choice would be the Carpenters. I LOVELOVELOVE Karen's voice, and think she's one of the top five female vocalists of the century. Probably number one for me.
But I wasn't as impressed with that version. It's kinda lackluster to me.
So my choice would be "neither".
Top choice is Linda Ronstadt, another megawatt singer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeQyoTIQOOM
I really like women singers. I have a TON of favorites.
On your second song, I like them both, can't pick. My fave Dave Clark Five song is "Glad all over".
Nice thread. I'll have to think of some songs that more than one group did.

OK.
The Who’s cover of Summertime Blues.
The Who’s cover of Young Man Blues.
The Dictators’ cover of Sonny and Cher’s I Got You, Babe. It is not great per se but it is hilarious.
The Dictators’s cover of California Sun.
Disturbed’s cover of Sounds of Silence although I also enjoy Simon and Garfunkel’s original version.

Re: Original or Cover Songs
I like both versions of Twist and Shout by the Isley Brothers and The Beatles. However, I'd have to favor The Beatles version. When The Beatles recorded the song, John Lennon wasn't feeling well and had a sore throat so his voice gave the song a rawer feeling.

I prefer the Beatles version. Best performance, of course, by Ferris Bueller. Gee, that takes “cover” to another, strange level, doesn’t it?Number6 wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 3:33 pm I like both versions of Twist and Shout by the Isley Brothers and The Beatles. Re: Original or Cover Songs
I've always loved watching the parade scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I tend to notice little things like the people dancing and moving as group towards the stairs. If you watch them, not only do they move smoothly as a group but not one of them is "bouncing" up and down. When I first saw this scene I thought the group was on a moving platform but they weren't.
Having marched in the AF, one of the things the military teaches while marching is not to "bounce." That normally happens when someone is out of step or just taking lazy steps.
Another parade scene I like is when Ferris is singing on the float, there is a blond woman dancing to Ferris's lefet who does a great double-take just before she catches Ferris as he falls backward.

It's a movie that shouldn't really "work" - but it does. One of my favorites. Every scene is gold. I wonder how many of the people working on the film thought it would be a dud. That nobody would get it.
I had a thing back in the day for Mia Sara, who played Ferris' girlfriend Sloan. She was simply gorgeous.
Re: Original or Cover Songs
Mia Sara's hottest look in that movie is when she, Ferris, and Cameron are in the cab and Ferris sees his dad in the cab next to his. Sloane puts on dark glasses giving her a sultry look.gounion wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 8:18 am It's a movie that shouldn't really "work" - but it does. One of my favorites. Every scene is gold.
