Tech aims to predict problems on power lines before disaster

LOS ANGELES (AP) — B. Don Russell wasn’t thinking about preventing a wildfire when he developed a tool to detect power line problems before they cause equipment failures, blackouts or even deadly accidents.

The electrical engineering professor at Texas A&M University figured he might save a life if his creation could prevent someone from being electrocuted by a downed live wire.

I can see how this could work, since big ground faults often begin as little ones.

Power lines in general are so badly maintained that an AM radio will also work. When you can no longer hear the station, you start looking for higher harmonics on, say, UHF, and then bingo there's the pole that's arcing and generally becoming a fire ready to happen. Then you call in the pole number and location to the power company. Then the power company does nothing.
