RIP to this bill in the U.S. Senate

The United States House Has Approved a New Anti-Robocall Bill

Today the United States House voted 417-3 to approve a anti-robocall bill that would help change rules to make it easier to crack down on unwanted calls.

“The House vote is a major victory in the long fight to curb abusive robocalls. This is another important step toward a national law to help us take our phones back from the robocallers. People are sick and tired of being harassed by robocalls, day and night. They disrupt our lives, and they can be scams by people who want to steal your money and exploit your personal information.” said Maureen Mahoney, Policy Analyst for Consumer Reports.

This would be nice if it works but I'm not going to get excited about it. The Do Nt Call List was supposed to have prevented robocalls but it has no teeth. I recently bought a new phone system for my home landline that has an anti-robocalling feature requiring the incoming caller to enter a number I selected to complete the call. The phone won't ring until the number is pressed at which time I know there is a live human being, or reasonably facsimile and then I'll answer it. So far, it works! I'll really appreciate it when the primary and general elections get close.

DNC doesn't work because robocallers conceal their identities. I can see some kind of two-factor authentication helping, at least until the bad guys figure out how to do voice recognition.
