Technicolor likely closing

Post by ZoWie »

Technicolor, same company that invented the first color movie process, is now the big player in visual fx. It strongly appears that the corporate parent in Europe is filing for bankruptcy and likely shutting down.

This would be catastrophic for the vfx field. Technicolor is a major player here, doing fx for Disney and a whole lot of other companies. This could be big doodoo for the whole industry.

More when I get it. :o

Someone still has to specify the characters involved, make preliminary story boards (though there's software for that now), set up the machine runs, and edit them into the final cut of the movie. You can't just give instructions like "Make a 47-second sequence where Superduperman picks up the getaway car and drops it in the police yard." AI is getting smarter every year, but it's not that smart... yet.

Right now the FX editor that I know still has plenty of work, though the proverbial writing is on the wall, and she is training to be a picture editor. Not so much due to machines, which they already use, as due to competition from lower bidders in places like India.

Most editing is already done at computers now, like everything else. Everything's time coded, and it drops right in. No more Moviolas, flatbed editors, or handwritten edge number logs like when I started.
