'Late Show with Stephen Colbert' to end next May: 'This is all just going away'----

Colbert called Paramount's $16 million settlement 'big, fat bribe'

Paramount Global, CBS's parent company, agreed on July 1 to a controversial $16 million settlement with Donald Trump over a defamation lawsuit tied to a "60 Minutes" interview with Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

The settlement was widely criticized as a financial concession to facilitate the studio's pending sale to Skydance Media, which requires regulatory approval from the Trump administration.

In response, Colbert slammed the deal on-air on July 14, following a summer vacation. Colbert, still sporting an unfortunate summer vacation mustache, called the infamous $16 million payment a "big fat bribe" in his scathing opening monologue.

Colbert also mocked reports saying the new Paramount owners would try to "please Trump" by putting "pressure on Stephen Colbert."

CBS, in its latest incarnation as part of the Paramount Global media conglomerate, itself soon to be part of an even bigger and yet more rapacious conglomerate, is a shell of its former self. The tourist-attraction Television City studio near the LA Farmers' Market, where they used to do all the game shows, is largely empty and slated for demolition.

The main Paramount lot, between a graveyard and a bunch of struggling businesses, is not the really cool place that it once was. It just looks old and tired. Twentieth Century Fox is now just plain old Fox and mostly a TV center surrounded by satellite dishes. The back lot is now a posh hotel/condo development, with an enormous shopping complex for the Beverly Hills crowd. MGM, the best lot of the bunch, the one I got thrown off of when I was in pre-school, is long gone. It's now some kind of amorphous and secretive entity called Sony Productions. The name changes once every five or so years. Its former parent company now does resorts and casinos.

When the movies came out here to escape the Edison Patents Company in New York/New Jersey, the first studio was Inceville which became Pacific Palisades which burned last January. It shows on the maps, but even before the fire there was no trace left. The other original historic studio is in Culver City near Sony. It's still there, but it's now owned by Amazon. Yes, that Amazon. The one with the guy in the photo shaking hands with Trump at his Second Inauguration.

All of these entities are now run by the same elitist bunch of suits in New York doing what suits in New York do, which is to move money around, and periodically join their reclusive friends at heavily guarded conferences in resorts you can't afford.

The whole entertainment business is in disarray, eviscerated by rapid technology changes and too many mergers. LA movie/TV production is on a ventilator, receiving all manner of financial incentives from state and local governments to shoot here at all. Everyone in the tech end of the biz is looking for other ways to make a living before CGI, AI, and other automated processes replace them altogether. What used to be technology in the service of art is now art in the service of technology.

There's still some activity in New York, but it too has the merger blues. The iconic ABC studio right on Times Square is closed and dark. They've turned off the news ticker sign. Everything is consolidating and merging and doing leveraged buyouts and all that other stuff that the suits on the 60th floors of office buildings do. Mostly they try to find ways to reach kids who prefer to bang on cell phones for most of their waking hours.

It's sure not what it was when I first got out of movie school. It was great fun, until it wasn't.

they shit canned colbert as a distraction from epstein news aka magat1.
now the wurld is talking about cbs for the weekend.

and yessssssssssss.....how to make more money/bucks/data/money/bucks from the kids and those posing as kids
who spend vast hours playing with plastic phones and "games" that may pay them a few bucks...while also
ignoring most of what is seen on what is currently known as "tvs".
that archaic chunk of mechanics that sit there while i change a channel with a remote...not my thumb.
they seem to want us all sitting like dumbshits playing with the plastic phone thing.
but that will disappoint the oli-fuks too..theyll continue to trash the public.

again reminiscent of why am i driving a huge new truck when i dont have to go anywhere since all i do
is now done playing on the plastic phone thing...why would i buy a huge new truck??? for what?
will ama zone deliver it too??

theyre trying to stay ahead of and control how the public spend its money: we're sppsd to give it to them.

At least in LA, most of the people driving these monstro patriotic trucks are wannabes. They never haul anything larger than a beer keg. I still can't figure out exactly what they wanna be, but it likely still has something to do with The Law Of Inverse Truck Proportion. That's the one where Size(truck) is proportional to 1/Size(dick).

You'd also be amazed by what's happening to the other major industry here, which is publicity. Forget movie stars. The big buzz now is "Influencers." That, as you know, is the weasel word for a bunch of 15-year-olds with huge Internet followings who get invited to parties where it's practically illegal to serve them what the open bar is dispensing. Some of these callow youths are multi-millionaires. They have replaced movie stars as the American Dream.

In general the Internet is a textbook demonstration of The Law of Unintended Consequences at work. A military communication system designed with your taxes to route messages around nuclear attacks is now a poison pill for what little was left of sanity in the entertainment industry.

If Colbert's show was losing so much money then why didn't CBS cancel him immediately?

If Colbert's show was losing so much money then why is CBS ending his show in May '26 instead of now?

This whole situation only makes sense when you look at it as Paramount and CBS willing to do what the Orange Anus want in order to get their merger approved.
When you vote left, you vote right.

Right, it's just more entertainment industry politics. As with most businesses, the real money for the people at the top comes from mergers and amalgamations, not selling a quality product to everybody else.

The people who actually draw a salary or contractual compensation are just doing their jobs. They are far, far removed from the antics of top management, which is doing a whole different thing. For several decades now, this has mostly involved moving money around and creating paper profits by buying and selling each other's stocks and intellectual property. This process was once heavily regulated, but most history since WWII has been about getting rid of these limits on personal greed.

It's a product, just like soap and new cars. The suits call us "content providers." We're kept around because we're how they get the product to sell to the public. The first time they can maximize profit by replacing us with computers, it'll be a done deal. No more "lights, camera, action." Just running software, with the lowest possible amount of compensation for crafts workers.

The line between animation and live action is getting ever smaller and more blurry. The unions are fighting tooth and nail to keep humans in the loop, but they are at a major disadvantage when taking on the oligarchy itself.

Meanwhile, canning a popular (and profitable) show because a president created and promoted by the ruling class didn't like something the host said, will remain standard operating procedure.
