Democrats retain House Districts 11 and 23 in Tuesday’s special elections

Just hours before the Virginia General Assembly was set to convene, Democrats on Tuesday held onto two House of Delegates seats in special elections, extending a winning streak that has followed a wave of legislative departures to fill key roles in Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger’s incoming administration.

By 8 p.m., Democrat Gretchen Bulova defeated Republican Adam Wise in House District 11 by 69.7–29.8% out of 5,932 votes cast, according to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections. Bulova will succeed her husband, former Del. David Bulova, who retired his seat after being tapped last month as Virginia’s next secretary of natural and historic resources.

New poll: Americans trust Republicans over Democrats on most major issues in Congress

The 2026 midterms might not bring the Blue Wave that many on the left are hoping for — that is, if the results of one new poll are any indication.

A new Wall Street Journal poll published this weekend shows Americans believe Congressional Republicans are “best able” to address most major issues — from immigration to the economy — rather than Democrats.

Meet the new, bigger City Council Progressive Caucus

The New York City Council Progressive Caucus is growing. Six new members were voted in at an internal meeting last week, growing the group’s ranks to 24 people.

That includes Gale Brewer, one of the council’s most experienced and well-known members, who is returning to a caucus that she left several years ago. And five freshman electeds: Elsie Encarnacion, Shirley Aldebol, Justin Sanchez, Shanel Thomas-Hentry and Kayla Santosuosso. (Harvey Epstein, another new council member, is also part of the caucus, though he joined back in November after taking office early.) Together with returning members, that puts the caucus just shy of a majority in the 51-member council – a fact the group is eager to start seizing upon.

New GOP anti-voting bill may be the most dangerous attack on voting rights ever

Republicans in Congress have unveiled a new bill that would impose the most extreme voting restrictions ever proposed at the federal level.

The new bill goes far beyond even the SAVE Act, which the House passed last year and which one historian called “the most extraordinary attack on voting rights in American history.”
