Progressives defy GOP, close in on a wealth tax to fund education in a state Trump won by 30 points.
Idaho is one of the most conservative, rural, and Republican-dominated states in the nation. It’s also on track to enact the sort of progressive economic policies that continue to elude Democrats in Washington, DC.
Earlier this month, grassroots organizers submitted what should be far more than enough petition signatures necessary to qualify a proposal called the Quality Education Act for the November ballot. The initiative, if passed, would raise taxes on corporations and the wealthy in order to fund the state’s beleaguered public K-12 school system.

Board cons CANT WAIT to see this fascism win the day.Awful new trend: Numerous GOP candidates are explicitly saying the voting is fraudulent only in urban/Dem areas, and not in red areas. The latest is Mo Brooks, who says the quiet part out loud: Dem votes are to be presumed suspect or illegitimate:

Re: 2022 Elections Thread
I don't have a problem with the republicans wanting a hand recount in their primaries. All it does is further divide the various factions of the republican party meaning whomever is declared the winner will have to try and smooth his opponents' voters. There could be some serious hurt feelings among these voters (ironic in that they're the ones who keep saying "I don't care about your feelings:) and maybe one percent of them won't vote in November. In a closely contested race, that one percent could be the difference between Democrats winning and republicans declaring the election was stolen.Libertas wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 11:38 am Here we go, fascists demand hand count.

‘It’s going to be an army’: Tapes reveal GOP plan to contest elections
Video recordings of Republican Party operatives meeting with grassroots activists provide an inside look at a multi-pronged strategy to target and potentially overturn votes in Democratic precincts: Install trained recruits as regular poll workers and put them in direct contact with party attorneys.
The plan, as outlined by a Republican National Committee staffer in Michigan, includes utilizing rules designed to provide political balance among poll workers to install party-trained volunteers prepared to challenge voters at Democratic-majority polling places, developing a website to connect those workers to local lawyers and establishing a network of party-friendly district attorneys who could intervene to block vote counts at certain precincts.

Re: 2022 Elections Thread
The problem here is that what you can do at polling places will be limited. For sure, I'm not telling anybody not to help out with poll monitoring ... with you looking out for the bad guys doing in-person voter caging and suppression. I'm sure that will happen, it always does.
I think most of the effort at what I would call election manipulation will be occurring with people contesting the mail-in ballots, early votes, etc. They will attempt to claim the vote totals coming on from blue and Dem areas are fraudulent. Partisan and QCrap Rethug state officials will override and challenge local, honest election officials (usually nonpartisan) on the ground. There's only one way to fight that battle, and it's with election lawyers. Seriously, support Marc Elias, and whoever will be doing this work. It will be key.
Yes, I do think they will do this. Yes, we need to be prepared. Yes, there's only one real way to fight it.

This is designed to intimidate voters who might have outstanding parking tix, child support issues, etc.
People who have just recently become eligible to vote, etc. So they are successful if people who would have voted, dont, because of this nazi stuff. and NOTHING they do will be objected to by board cons. Board cons absolutely get a THRILL when non white, non cons are prevented from voting because in their childish minds they think they are the only ones who should be allowed to vote in the first place.
It must not be tolerated. But, if one side decides to become actual fascist criminals, what can the other side do about it?
BTW Other than a handful of trump voters voting twice or voting when they were not supposed to, there is NO VOTER FRAUD and ALL of this is designed to fix a problem that does not exist. You cons who see no problem with this are enemies of democracy.

Iowa Democrats hope changes help it salvage leadoff caucuses
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — In a last-ditch effort to salvage their leadoff presidential selection position, Iowa Democrats are proposing two key changes that they hope will increase participation and avoid the chaos that marred their 2020 caucuses.
One change would allow Iowa Democrats to submit presidential preference cards by mail or in person before caucus night. Critics have long argued that the caucuses, held in the dead of winter at the dawn of a presidential election year, have prevented older adults, disabled people and shift workers from being able to take part.

Are Iowa's Democratic Days Gone For Good?
DUBUQUE, Iowa—Megan Simpson was 3 years old when her family strapped her in a stroller and took her door-knocking for the first time. She was in elementary school when she began stuffing mailers for get-out-the-vote campaigns. Every Election Day during the 1990s and 2000s, Megan and her five brothers and sisters stayed home from school as the house was transformed into a staging area for the precinct. Her parents would blast Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “Takin’ Care of Business,” and their living room would fill up with volunteers and stacks of walk packets.
In Dubuque County, full of Irish and German Catholics and dotted with manufacturing plants, Democrats outnumbered Republicans by the thousands. These were blue-collar people, most of them white, who voted for politicians allied with unions. The county hadn’t backed a Republican presidential candidate since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. It was the seat of Democratic politics in northeast Iowa, maybe the strongest concentration of Democrats in the entire state. And the Simpsons were its first family.

Primary elections live updates: San Francisco voters recall DA; LA mayor's race headed to runoff
High-profile races in California — a San Francisco district attorney recall and a mayor's race in Los Angeles headed to a runoff — could signal trouble for Democrats in the November general elections.
Voters hit the polls for primary elections and other races not just in California, but also in Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota on Tuesday.

Voter turnout in California, so far, is low with 14.6% as of 11:20 PM PDT. In San Diego County, turnout is better than the statewide turnout at 21%. Of course, as more precincts report and votes are counted the turnout results will change.

It's not unusual for low voter turnout during primaries because the voters who vote in primaries tend to be those who are active in or follow politics closely. The average over the past 11 June primaries is around 27%. I figure when the election is certified turnout will be around 25%.carmenjonze wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 12:29 pm Yes, it was 26% in San Francisco, which really is pretty abysmal.

Basically, the national media decided that last night's California primary was going to mean a "rebuke of the Left," based essentially on one and only one race: the recall of SF District Attorney Chesa Boudin (whom I know little about except I clerked for his uncle). Meanwhile, here in Los Angeles, which dwarfs San Francisco in size:
*After spending nearly $40 million of his own money, billionaire developer Rick Caruso has been forced into a runoff with Rep. Karen Bass, with the remaining candidates running about where Bass is ideologically or to her left. She remains the favorite for the fall.
*County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, who has imitated Joe Arpaio, campaigned against "wokeness" and has tolerated right-wing gangs of sheriff's deputies, came nowhere close to 50% for re-election, and will almost certainly be defeated in November;
*The campaign to recall District Attorney George Gascon couldn't even get enough signatures to get on the ballot (they are trying again).
*Progressive challengers to a couple of city councilmembers have also forced them into runoffs.
Essentially, the national media decided what the story was, and when it didn't happen, ran with the story anyway.
No one likes crime. No question that crime ticked up during the pandemic. But it remains about where it was 10 years ago, when the story of the end of crime was blasted throughout the media. And San Francisco politics is crazy, as it *always has been* (although all is forgiven because it gave us the
Greatest Speaker In US History as well as the Grateful Dead).
Stop jamming this story down the public's throat. If you want to cover California, don't send out morons who stay here for a couple of years, write pieces full of cliches, and then leave.
That is all.

Re: 2022 Elections Thread
Even in a Great Year, Republicans’ Winnable Seats Are Limited
Just as it is rare for rivers to reverse their flow, in the last six months before a midterm election the clear direction of that campaign almost never reverses. Midterm elections are almost always referenda on the sitting president and governing party, with the cumulative impressions of how that president and the party in charge are performing gradually hardening. Conditions can improve or deteriorate, but the direction, generally speaking, doesn’t reverse. With the results from the Gallup Organization’s May survey now in hand, President Biden’s Gallup approval ratings have slipped below those of Donald Trump’s at this point of their respective presidencies, and are the lowest of any elected president in the post-World War II period in May of their second year.
Obviously, things can change, but recent history certainly looks ominous for Democrats. Biden’s 41 percent Gallup approval is 1 point below that of Trump in the May before the 2018 midterms, and 2 points below Trump’s final, pre-midterm-election Gallup survey. As one might expect under those conditions, Republicans lost 42 House seats in that election, although the GOP actually had a net gain in the Senate of two seats, thanks in part to a very favorable map.
