DOJ and New Jersey US Attorney’s office open investigation into the City of Trenton and its police department focusing on use of excessive force

(CNN) - The Justice Department and the US Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey have opened an investigation into the Trenton Police Department and the City of Trenton that will focus on the use of excessive force and unlawful stops, searches and arrests, officials announced Tuesday.

The pattern-or-practice investigation was spurred after a thorough review of court records, statistics, media reports, body-worn camera footage and instances of what Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke called “problematic uses of force” for minor traffic violations.

2nd Police Officer Acquitted In Death Of Elijah McClain

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — A second Denver-area police officer was acquitted Monday in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain, who was put in a neck hold and injected with ketamine after being stopped by police as he walked home from a convenience store.

The jury found Aurora officer Nathan Woodyard not guilty of homicide and manslaughter following a weekslong trial in state district court. He faced years in prison if convicted.

3 officers acquitted in death of Black man who said he couldn’t breathe

A jury in Washington state acquitted three police officers of all criminal charges in the March 2020 death of Manuel Ellis, a 33-year-old Black man who was shocked, beaten, restrained and said he could not breathe.

The Washington state attorney general’s office announced in May 2021 that it charged two Tacoma Police officers, Matthew Collins and Christopher Burbank, with second-degree murder and a third officer, Timothy Rankine, with first-degree manslaughter.

Democratic senators pressed the Department of Justice (DOJ) about police usage of facial recognition tools in a Thursday letter.

“In recent years, facial recognition and other biometric technologies have become widely used in law enforcement,” the letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland reads. “However, these technologies can be unreliable and inaccurate, especially with respect to race and ethnicity.”

Prosecutors dismiss charges against Louisiana troopers who bragged of beating a Black motorist

Louisiana prosecutors have quietly dismissed charges against state police troopers who were recorded beating a Black motorist and hoisting him to his feet by his hair braids before bragging in text messages that the “whoopin’” would give the man “nightmares for a long time.”

The violent 2020 arrest of Antonio Harris was among a series of beatings of Black men captured on body camera that prompted a sprawling U.S. Justice Department investigation into use of force by the Louisiana State Police. It came about a year after the deadly 2019 arrest of Ronald Greene in northern Louisiana, a beating that also resulted in state charges.

3 Deputies Charged With Making False Calls About Dead Bodies While On Duty

Three South Carolina deputies have been arrested for allegedly making multiple false reports about finding dead bodies while on duty.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division announced that First Stg. Justin Tyler Reichard, Sgt. Darien Myles Roseau, and Deputy Killian Daniel Loflin were charged with misconduct in office, criminal conspiracy, and aggravated breach of peace.

An Australian police officer has been charged with murdering his ex-boyfriend and his new partner, who went missing earlier this week.

New South Wales police officer Beaumont Lamarre-Condon, 28, was taken into custody Friday morning, according to CNN, and charged with murdering Jesse Baird, 26, and Luke Davies, 29.

California officer shoots and kills boy, 15, holding gardening tool

A sheriff’s deputy in southern California shot and killed a 15-year-old boy who was holding a gardening tool, officials said.

The San Bernardino county sheriff’s department was responding to a 911 call on Saturday from a family reporting that a boy, identified as Ryan Gainer, was attacking his family at their home in Apple Valley, east of Los Angeles. The department said he was holding a 5ft gardening tool and approaching the first deputy who arrived at the scene when the deputy shot him. Gainer was later taken to a hospital where he died.

2 Black men tortured by Mississippi officers call for toughest sentences

Two Black men who were tortured by six Mississippi law enforcement officers last year called Monday for a federal judge to impose the strictest possible penalties at their sentencings this week.

The former law officers admitted in August to subjecting Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker to numerous acts of racially motivated, violent torture......

I know. Every case is different. Stats show most police / civilian interactions to be peaceful. Those that involve force are more often justified. But there are exceptions and those are what we hear about. You don’t hear about the vast majority that don’t involve force or are otherwise justifiable uses of force. And yet we judge them all by the exceptions. We should consider each case separately on its own merits.

We also don't hear about the ones where Police overstep their bounds with people of color and they knuckle under even though the Police are acting unlawfully and ignore their rights.
