https://www.marinij.com/2022/04/19/blac ... 20occurred.

The Black owners of a business in Tiburon have settled a racial profiling claim with the town for $150,000 and the establishment of a police advisory council.

The settlement was announced Tuesday outside of Yema, the downtown Tiburon clothing boutique where the incident occurred. Married co-owners Yema Khalif and Hawi Awash addressed a crowd of residents, activists and media, with their attorneys David C. Anderson and Charles Bonner.

We are not begging. We are demanding,” Khalif said. “We’re going to speak out. We’re going to be vocal and we are going to show how people deserve to be treated.”

The settlement stemmed from an interaction between police officers and Khalif at about 1 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2020. Khalif, Awash and their friend were inside the store, located at 10 Main St. in Tiburon, when Tiburon police Officer Isaac Madfes approached and questioned them.

The officer was later joined by a supervisor, Tiburon police Sgt. Michael Blasi, and Officer Jeremy Clark of the Belvedere Police Department. Khalif argued with the police over whether the people inside the store needed to prove their right to be there.

Tiburon has been pretty much a White Enclave for many years, much like Sausalito. The few minorities seen in Tiburon have usually been in the service industry, house cleaning, cooking and taking care the kids.

Whites have seen themselves reflected in Tiburon's Police Department. At the time of August incident, Khalif and his wife were the only African-American Store Owner's in Tiburon. The cops over reacted. White Store Owner's do not have to proof that they own or manage a store, but the African-American Couple did.
My grandmother would call Tiburon "a nice place to be from. Far away from."

A Black Kansas City police sergeant is alleging in a civil lawsuit that he was racially profiled during a 2021 traffic stop and that the two colleagues who pulled him over conspired about what happened, falsely accusing him of misconduct.

Read more at: https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/a ... rylink=cpy.

Herb Robinson, a 30-year veteran of the Kansas City Police Department, was wearing his uniform and driving an unmarked police car on March 11, 2021, when he was pulled over. In his lawsuit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court, Robinson said he was pulled over by officers Cole Modeer, who is white, and Marco Olivas, who is Hispanic, for nothing other than his race.

Fearing Bad Publicity, LASD Covered Up Case of Deputy Who Onelt on Inmate’s Head.

https://www.latimes.com/california/stor ... ce-coverup.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials attempted to cover up an incident in which a deputy knelt on the head of a handcuffed inmate for three minutes because they feared the “negative light” it could shed on the department, according to internal records reviewed by The Times.

Department officials were worried about the optics of the kneeling, “given its nature and its similarities to widely publicized George Floyd use of force,” a commander who was critical of the cover-up wrote in an internal force review.

Those officials decided not to pursue criminal charges against the inmate, who had punched the deputy in the face, to avoid drawing attention to the incident, according to the report by the commander, Allen Castellano.

With respect to all Angelino's, all you did was trade on thug Sheriff for another thug Sheriff.

Creator of "The Wire", an amazing show on HBO by David Simon (Simon worked as a police reporter at The Baltimore Sun from 1982 to 1995) now has a new show on HBO "We Own This City" and it too is about the problems in Baltimore and corrupt cops.

This show already looks amazing, if you have not seen "The Wire", get to it.

This new one refers to the city after Freddie Gray.
I sigh in your general direction.

Post-Floyd probe finds discrimination by Minneapolis police

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minneapolis Police Department has engaged in a pattern of race discrimination for at least a decade, including stopping and arresting Black people at a higher rate than white people, using force more often on people of color and maintaining a culture where racist language is tolerated, a state investigation launched after George Floyd’s killing found.

The report released Wednesday by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights following a nearly two-year investigation said the agency and the city would negotiate a court-enforceable agreement to address the long list of problems identified in the report, with input from residents, officers, city staff and others.

Retired NYPD Veteran Convicted of Officer Flagpole Assault During Capitol Riot - NBC New York

Can't reform this.
Thomas Webster, a 20-year NYPD veteran who retired in 2011 after 20 years of service with the department, was the first Capitol riot defendant to be tried on an assault charge and the first to present a jury with a self-defense argument

Webster, 56, testified that he was trying to protect himself from a “rogue cop” who punched him in the face. He also accused the Metropolitan Police Department officer, Noah Rathbun, of instigating the confrontation.
Wonder how many Black and Latino heads this guy has smashed on the job.

Don't think this isn't common knowledge. We fell for this guy's line of BS, and when he got in he continued every LASD abuse, and there are many. He made most of them worse. He routinely covers up all internal affairs and dares the county to do anything about it. He blocks all attempts to clean up their violent and internal-gang-ridden department. Yes, the worst gang bangers in LA wear badges.

It's one more reason I'm not looking forward to this election. I think LA is beyond help.

San Jose Police Officer Faces Sexual Misconduct Charge.

https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/s ... s/2883190/

New allegations against the San Jose Police Department came to light Thursday involving an officer's sexual misconduct on the job.

NBC Bay Area learned an officer who responded to a home recently, with a mother and daughter inside, is accused of masturbating onto their kitchen table.

If these allegations are proven to be true, then this person has no place in law enforcement,” said Sean Pritchard, president of the SJPD Police Officers Association. “Having these different incidents has really led us to a place where we want to take a much harder look at our hiring process, our backgrounding process and really see if there’s something that’s being missed.”

More on the San Jose Police Department.

https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/s ... y/2880180/.

A San Jose police officer has been placed on administrative leave over allegations he was under the influence when he responded to last week’s kidnapping of a baby boy.

Sources with knowledge of the investigation told NBC Bay Area that an FBI agent at the scene reported the officer appeared to be impaired, and a subsequent breathalyzer test showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.139, nearly twice the legal limit.

The San Jose officer was one of many who responded to the scene after 3-month-old Brandon Cuellar was taken from inside his grandmother's home last Monday.

Brandon was found safe the next day.

Why am I very much getting a OCP/Robocop/"Delta City" vibe from this?

The only reason to have a "Cop City" sim? is to be training cops for urban warfare. And corporations are funding it? How very cyberpunk.

https://robocop.fandom.com/wiki/Omni_Consumer_Products

Omni Consumer Products (OCP) was an American mega-corporation based in Detroit that created products for virtually every consumer need among its citizens, and had entered into endeavors normally deemed non-profit, and even had plans to manufacture an entire city to be maintained exclusively by the corporation.

[snip][end]

Huh. Now, this sounds dystopian.

https://www.mainlinezine.com/cop-city-a ... n-atlanta/

The matter before City Council was a proposal to raze 85 acres of Atlanta’s South River Forest and replace it with a new police training center. Reflecting the center’s plans to include a mock city for police and fire training, organizers who mobilized against the plan had dubbed the proposed facility “Cop City.” If the proposal passed, one of Atlanta’s critical remaining greenspaces would be destroyed and replaced with a massive, toxic, and noisy training center. The footprint of policing in Atlanta would expand significantly, just one year after nationwide uprisings demanded divestment from policing and investment in community-based safety.

[snip]

The minority who called to support Cop City were from one of three groups: a handful of firefighters, at least 30 police officers, and a large number of self-identified residents of the disproportionately white and wealthy Buckhead and Northeast Atlanta area. Pro-Cop City callers used the language of white flight, invoking the “uptick in crime” and threatening to leave the city if something wasn’t done.

On the other hand, those who opposed Cop City called from every other district, in addition to the area in unincorporated Dekalb County where the facility would be built. They represented all areas, classes, and races of Atlanta. By my count there was not one person who called in from any neighborhood near the proposed construction site who supported the project.

[snip]

The campaign brought together police and prison abolitionist organizations, environmental justice and preservation organizations, civil and human rights nonprofits, and even neighborhood associations near the proposed site—including the East Atlanta Community Association, the Grant Park Neighborhood Association, South Atlantans for Neighborhood Development, and the Kirkwood Neighbors Organization, each of which passed resolutions opposing the proposal. Grassroots organizations that mobilized against the proposal included Defund APD, Refund Communities, the Atlanta Sunrise Movement, Community Movement Builders, the South River Forest Coalition, A World Without Police, and autonomous organizers working under the banner of “Defend the Forest.”

[snip]

In addition to serving as CEO of Cox Enterprises, Alex Taylor chairs the Atlanta Committee for Progress (ACP), which describes itself as “a partnership between the city’s top business, civic and academic leaders, and the Mayor of Atlanta to support positive change in our city.” Founded in 2003, ACP focuses particularly on development projects in Atlanta, and its board is mostly leaders of major corporations, including Delta Airlines, Equifax, Chik-fil-A, Koch Industries, AT&T, Home Depot, Mercedes Benz, Coca-Cola, and Georgia Power, as well as a number of Georgia-based university presidents and foundation representatives.

In April 2021, ACP released a statement in support of the facility, and noted that then-Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms had “asked Taylor to lead a capital campaign to seed the initial private funding for the project.” Taylor agreed.

[snip][end]

Holy crap. Instead of OCP, it's "ACP" ... art imitating life, one letter off.

Uvalde shooting timeline exposes an ugly truth: The police have no legal duty to protect you
In 2005, the Supreme Court ruled that there is no "'entitlement’ to receive protective services" from police
https://www.salon.com/2022/05/27/uvalde ... otect-you/

[snip]

Well, one certainly can try to sue! But here's the sad, dark truth: Such a lawsuit is almost certainly doomed from the get-go. In 2005, the Supreme Court settled whether or not citizens are entitled to protection from violence from the police with a resounding "nope, see you later." This case also involves the murder of three small children, so readers be forewarned. In 1999, Colorado resident Jessica Lenahan (then Gonzales) obtained a restraining order against her ex-husband, Simon Gonzales, who was stalking her and her four children. A few days later, he showed up at her house and kidnapped her three daughters. She frantically called the police for hours, over and over, and they did nothing. It was only when Simon Gonzales showed up at the police station, gun in hand, that they reacted, by killing him. They found the three little girls murdered at their father's hand in the car.

Lenahan sued the police, arguing that by ignoring her pleas for help, they had violated her 14th amendment rights to equal protection. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, where she lost in a 7-2 decision in 2005. The opinion's author, Antonin Scalia, argued that the police's right to discretion prevailed, and there is no "'entitlement' to receive protective services." That the cops were bad at their job didn't change the fact that the right to discretion over the right call lay with them, not Lenahan.

There is a "traditional belief that police are there to proactively prevent and deescalate dangerous situations," as Ramenda Cyrus wrote for the American Prospect just last month, but, in reality, "the cops do not have a duty to protect you, or anyone."

[snip][end]

Now look, yes, of course, for many years folks have complained about over-reactive police. I get there is a Goldilocks problem here. But surely there is a happy medium between slamming and cuffing (or shooting) everything that moves to not doing anything to protect peoples' lives who are CLEARLY in danger.

And I hate discussing this, because certain people are going to decide that since that's the case, the only answer is for every Tom Dick & Harry to carry their own arsenal. But we need to talk about reality. And yes, this is a place where the obligations of public servants need to be clearly outlined.

The law says ordinary citizens have no proactive responsibility to rescue you from crime. I understand that. Spider-Man is a fictional character, and ordinary people can't dodge bullets. But that badge is supposed to come with an oath.

I would say anyone who has endured/survived DV or IPV already knows what a waste of hard-earned cash a restraining order is. And for people financially dependent on abusive partners, they are impossible to get without them finding out, anyway.

Then there's that horriffic concept, "between a man and his wife." :? :(

I've seen the talk about this 2005 case in the past few days, too. I didn't know about it until this mass murder; what a way to find out. :(
And I hate discussing this, because certain people are going to decide that since that's the case, the only answer is for every Tom Dick & Harry to carry their own arsenal. I'd say people who talk that way are drunk on gun lobby propaganda. It's NOT realistic, and it doesn't even make any sense.

She is pregnant. :(

Witness says Kansas City police fired at woman running from officers in parking lot - Kansas City Star
Shédanja, 29, said she went to the store with her three children to get gasoline and ice cream. She heard officers start yelling, “Get out the car,” to two people who were in the vehicle next to hers. A man exited, jumped a fence and ran. Three officers chased after him, she said. The woman exited the car with her hands up, Shédanja said.
Conservatives would mindlessly tell her, pants up don't loot, regardless of the actual circumstance.

#prolife
#profamily
Officers told the woman to get on the ground, but the woman told them she was pregnant, Shédanja said, and couldn’t get down on the ground. Police asked her to get down multiple times. The woman then told police there was a gun in the vehicle. The woman started backing toward a fence in the parking lot. Several officers approached her and had their weapons drawn, Shédanja said. “She did not pull out a weapon on them,” she said. “She did not even have a stick in her hand."
Pregnant. Conservatives in this country hate pregnant people, especially pregnant Black people. :(
