‘One life lost is far too many:’ 70 pastors calling for justice for Patrick Lyoya
“To everything there is a time and a season. This is a time for anger,” said Rev. Christy Lipscomb at the podium of Grace Church. “We ministers of Christian churches in Grand Rapids call for accountability for the killing of Patrick Lyoya. Black residents of Grand Rapids and people of color in this community need to feel safe. To that end, actions must be taken.”

Lipscomb is a pastor and co-founder of City Life Church. She read the letter at Grace, alongside over a dozen pastors who signed it as well. It outlines their demands for they want officials to take to achieve change.

The first demand, they said, is that Becker recuse himself from the investigation.

“We’re talking 58 days from the time in which Patrick’s life was taken,” said Dr. Willie Gholston III of First Community AME Church. “Now it’s in the prosecutor’s hands and he’s the one that is actually delaying what is transpiring.”

The group said they’ve asked him on several occasions to recuse himself. They’re also asking that an outside prosecutor take the investigation or Attorney General Dana Nessel.

The letter, which the association said is a joint multicultural effort for change, also demands:

A federal investigation conducted into the deadly shooting and into the ‘history and culture’ of GRPD

For the community to have a seat at the table during police union contract talks

Proper funding and resources for the Civilian Appeal Board and the Office of Oversight and Public Accountability so that change is achieved

The City and GRPD respect people's constitutional right to protest.....

Three Arizona police officers are placed on leave after looking on as a man drowned - NPR
Three Tempe police officers who looked on as a man drowned in an Arizona lake late last month have been placed on "non-disciplinary paid administrative leave" as several law enforcement agencies investigate what happened.

According to city officials, officers responded to a call about a disturbance just after 5 a.m. outside the Tempe Center for the Arts, where they found Sean Bickings, 34, and his companion.

Officers were talking to an uncuffed Bickings — who officials described as an "unsheltered Tempe community member" — while they ran his and his companion's name through a database to check for outstanding warrants, authorities said.

It was then that Bickings climbed a metal fence, descended an embankment and began to swim in Tempe Town Lake, police body camera footage from one of the officers shows.

The footage cuts out before Bickings begins to struggle in the water, but the city provided a transcript of the video from there.

"I'm drowning," Bickings says.

An officer tells him to swim to a pylon, but Bickings says he can't.

"Okay, I'm not jumping in after you," the officer responds.
Psychos.

Texas agencies resist releasing public records that could help clarify response to Uvalde school shooting - Texas Tribune
The Texas Tribune and ProPublica have submitted about 70 requests to state and local agencies for emergency response documentation surrounding the mass shooting at Robb Elementary. Most likely won’t be released publicly for months, if ever.

In the past week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has joined the growing list of state and local officials fighting the release of records that could help bring clarity to how the emergency response unfolded during last month’s deadly shooting in Uvalde.

The governor’s office strayed from that broader opposition Monday, granting a request under the Texas Public Information Act from a Houston television station that sought the handwritten notes he used when he first spoke publicly about the shooting. The notes appear to support Abbott’s claim that he was misled when he initially praised law enforcement efforts during the mass shooting that resulted in the deaths of 19 children and two educators and left many more injured.

The recent release by Abbott underscores both the tremendous power government officials have to decide what is in the public interest and the unwillingness to release records that could call their agencies’ actions into question.

ProPublica and The Texas Tribune have submitted about 70 public information requests that could help answer larger questions as state and local leaders continue to offer conflicting accounts about why law enforcement did not confront the gunman sooner during the May 24 massacre. Those requests include 911 audio recordings, body and police car camera footage, and communications among local, state and federal agencies. The newsrooms also requested use-of-force documents, death records and ballistic reports.

Three weeks after the shooting, government officials have not provided the news organizations a single record related to the emergency response.

“The public wants immediate transparency,” said Kelley Shannon, executive director of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas. “The most enlightened law enforcement agencies understand the importance of being transparent, being open and doing it right away.”

Akron Police Officers Placed on Leave After Fatal Shooting of Black Man - NYT
A lawyer for the family of the victim, Jayland Walker, said he was struck dozens of times. The Ohio city braced for protests as footage of the shooting is expected to be released Sunday.
Release the footage for what?
An unspecified number of police officers in Akron, Ohio, were placed on administrative leave after the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old Black man who the police said continued to drive after they tried to pull him over for an unspecified traffic violation.

Officials in Akron were bracing for protests that could follow the release on Sunday of footage of the shooting, which took place after the driver, Jayland Walker, exited his vehicle and fled on foot to a parking lot early Monday morning.

A lawyer for the family of Mr. Walker said the footage shows that he was running away, unarmed, when police officers fired at him more than 90 times.

The lawyer, Bobby DiCello, reviewed footage of the shooting on Thursday. His legal team also visited the medical examiner’s office on Friday and reviewed the autopsy, which has not been finalized. Mr. DiCello said it showed that Mr. Walker had been struck at least 60 times.

The Summit County Medical Examiner could not immediately be reached on Saturday.

“I’ve been a trial lawyer for 22 years and I’ve never seen anything remotely close to what that video is going to show,” Mr. DiCello said of the footage to be released. He said eight officers were involved in the shooting, though the authorities did not specify a number.
Then don't show it.

I'm not watching it. Predictably, there were uprisings in Akron, tonight.

'He was outgunned, outmanned.' Akron leaders condemn shooting of Jayland Walker - Beacon Journal
Reactions from community leaders to the Jayland Walker video footage released Sunday came quickly and with strongly worded messages condemning Akron police.

Walker died after being shot multiple times June 27 by Akron police officers following a brief chase.

“He was outgunned, outmanned,” Akron NAACP President Judi Hill said Sunday. “There’s just no reason for any of this. They knew there was only one person in that vehicle.”

“There’s no way that anyone who sees this video is not going to be angry,” she said. “There’s no way. Let’s just put that out there first. I just hope we use our anger in a constructive manner so as we move forward we can do it to make change, because that’s what we need. We have to change the narrative.”
Quit showing this state-sponsored snuff.
"There are so many things that common sense should tell you over police training. He was running away. You have his car," he said. "You can catch him another day and instead, they murdered him in cold blood, and that’s what I witnessed … That’s stuff you only see in movies."
This is not a training issue.

Can't reform this.

Sheriff Villanueva's former chief of staff admits belonging to alleged Grim Reaper deputy gang - Newsbreak/ABC7
Current and former members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department with close ties to Sheriff Alex Villanueva testified Friday about what they know about alleged deputy gangs within the department.

Villanueva's former chief of staff Larry Del Mese made a stunning admission under oath, admitting he belonged to an alleged deputy gang known as the Grim Reapers.

"I was a member of the Grim Reapers," Del Mese testified by video during a public hearing in the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission's investigation on deputy gangs.

Villanueva has denied the existence of deputy gangs.

Del Mese was asked if he ever got a Grim Reaper tattoo.

"Yes," Del Mese told the special counsel.

LA Sheriff is a problem. Indeed some stations, or "offices" as they call them, may be too far gone to save without a major personnel change. The current sheriff lied that he would go after the gangs. He's all for them. The best thing would be for the Federal government to take over the LA Sheriff Department, the way a judge with a consent decree had authority over LAPD for a time.

Ex-Cleveland officer who fatally shot Tamir Rice will resign from Pennsylvania department, attorney says

Timothy Loehmann, the former Cleveland police officer who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014, will resign from a Pennsylvania police department after his hiring sparked outrage, his attorney said.

Steve Hazlett, the president of the Tioga Borough Council in Pennsylvania, announced Loehmann's hiring Tuesday, posting a Facebook picture of the officer being sworn in. The photo, which was eventually deleted Thursday, led to some fury on the social media platform.

Teen shot and killed by Glendale police during stolen vehicle investigation - ABC15
Officers surrounded the vehicle in a parking space with their own vehicles in the complex Wednesday to keep the suspects from leaving. At that time a 15-year-old male in the driver's seat allegedly told officers there was a gun in the vehicle. A 16-year-old was also sitting in the passenger's seat at the time.

Police originally said they removed the driver from the vehicle, and that after that, a struggle ensued and the 15-year-old allegedly reached toward where the gun was believed to be inside the vehicle. At that time at least one other officer fired at the 15-year-old. Police say a short time passed and the driver reached toward the spot the gun was believed to be at again, and officers fired once again.

However, police told ABC15 in a follow up that they are unsure if the 15-year-old was ever removed from the vehicle before the shooting happened.

The 15-year-old was taken to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.
15, unarmed, murdered.

Akron police arrest Breonna Taylor’s aunt, issue warrant for Jacob Blake’s father during protest over police shooting
....Blake was taken to the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, and the other man was taken to the Summit County Jail. A warrant was issued for Blake on Thursday.

Blake told protesters that he is the father of Jacob Blake Jr., the man who was left partially paralyzed after he was shot by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 2020.

Bianca Austin, 41, of Louisville, Kentucky, was arrested and charged with rioting, disorderly conduct, and failure to disperse. Austin posted a $2,500 bond Thursday afternoon.

She told demonstrators that she is the aunt of Breonna Taylor, a medical worker who was shot and killed by Louisville police in a March 2020 raid at her apartment.

To disperse the crowd, officers deployed tear gas. When the demonstrators left the police station, nearly 100 people relocated to the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center.

The hospital was placed on lockdown after protesters blocked Wabash Avenue, which made it difficult for others to gain entry to the emergency room.............
Day of mourning planned in Akron
Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan and Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett responded Saturday to recent criticism of Akron police interactions with demonstrators.

Video obtained by FOX 8 showed an officer hitting a protester multiple times with a closed fist.

“I’ve heard the calls for concern at the way Akron Police have responded to recent demonstrations. I’ve seen the videos and I understand that concern. I want the community to know that I am fully committed to de-escalating the tension in our city. We are always looking for ways to improve, and Chief Mylett and I have had ongoing conversations about our approach and our role in lowering the temperature and helping to de-escalate the violence and anger here in Akron. As we call for peace, we understand that call applies to all of us. I’m hopeful that we can all come to the table and begin to have the necessary conversations to create forward progress for our city,” Mayor Dan Horrigan said......
