Protesters seek video release from police shooting in Grand Rapids
Hundreds of people joined a protest march during which family members of a man fatally shot by a western Michigan police officer called for public release of video from the confrontation.

The mile-long march in Grand Rapids on Saturday followed Monday's shooting death of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya, who police said fought with the officer after his vehicle was stopped over a license plate issue.

Marchers chanted "show the video!" and "we want the world to know!" in pushing for Grand Rapids police to release body and dash camera video of the shooting.

Lyoya's father, Peter Lyoya, said the family immigrated from the African country of Congo in search of a better life.

"The world needs to know the truth. People need to fight for justice for Patrick," Lyoya said through an interpreter......

Video: Michigan Cop On Black Man's Back, Fatally Shot Him.

https://apnews.com/article/michigan-gra ... 90b41fb454.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan police officer struggling with a Black man over a Taser pulled out his gun and fatally shot him in the head while the motorist was face down on the ground, according to videos of the April 4 confrontation released Wednesday.

Patrick Lyoya, 26, was shot outside a house in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The white officer repeatedly demanded that Lyoya “let go” of the officer’s Taser. At one point, he said, “drop the Taser!”

Police Chief Eric Winstrom released four videos, including cellphone footage recorded by a passenger in the car driven by Lyoya on the rainy morning.

I view it as a tragedy. ... It was a progression of sadness for me,” said Winstrom, a former high-ranking Chicago police commander who became chief in March.

He was trying to go to the passenger side of the car to get his license because his friend couldnt find it.

A caller to Randi Rhodes pointed this out, at first Randi said she didnt think so but she rewatched it a couple times and said absolutely, that is what he was doing. The cop had asked for the DL and the murdered person asked his friend to get it but in a different language maybe, and his friend couldnt find it so he calmly and slowly headed for the other side of the car to look into glove box and that is when cop attacked him.
I sigh in your general direction.

Patrick Lyoya escaped violence in Congo for the 'safe haven' of the US. Then police killed him.
"They told us that in America, there's peace, there's safety, you're not going to see killing anymore, that it was basically a safe haven," Dorcas Lyoya said in Congolese during an interview with the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, through a translator.

But last week, her first-born son, Patrick Lyoya, was fatally shot in the back of the head by a police officer after a struggle, an incident that has outraged civil rights advocates and led to protests in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Lyoya's death and others like it can rattle the sense of security of Black immigrants and refugees who came to the U.S. to escape violence only to find themselves vulnerable to the same brutality and racism African Americans encounter from police as well as the additional specter of federal immigration authorities, immigration advocates told USA TODAY.

"It's shocking to Black migrants who have this vision of the United States as the land of the free and the home of the brave," said Nana Gyamfi, executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration. "There's a notion that police here are going to be different.".....
creating widespread fear
...."Certainly the Congolese community is feeling some fear, kind of scared over what happened and I would say rightfully so," Cavanaugh said. "Those maybe who have much less English skills are just more apprehensive about getting pulled over or how they're supposed to respond in certain situations."....
...."We have to deal with the violence that police inflict on us because we're Black," Gyamfi said. "And then the additional violence that then often is inflicted on us by ICE in this immigration enforcement system because of our migrant status."...

San Francisco Police Officers Arrested, Charged With Destroying Evidence During Investigation.

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/ ... 091890.php.

Two San Francisco police officers have been arrested and charged with the destruction of evidence during an investigation, according to San Francisco Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office.

Officers Kevin Lyons and Kevin Sien of the Tenderloin Station voluntarily surrendered themselves at San Francisco County Jail on Tuesday, four days after a state judge issued arrest warrants, and both face charges of destroying or concealing evidence.

Lyons and Sien both allegedly destroyed evidence on July 3, 2021, while on duty. According to a press release from the District Attorney’s Office, employees at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis on Mission Street were searching for “missing hotel property” in the luggage of a guest who didn't pay for their room and found multiple credit cards, ID cards and drugs believed to be methamphetamines.

In related Racist/Corrupt/Immoral Police. A retired SFPD Officer was arrested on the illegal possession of a Machine Gun (Yes, a Maching Gun).

And Mayor Breed's answer to the problems of the Tenderloin is more cops. :problem:

Breed is knuckling under to business interests in the City. I can remember when the business' on Market Street want the St. Anthony Dinning Room moved because of the "Homeless Element". Now mind you, as you walked down Jones Street to Market Street, there in all it's glory was theater featuring nude dancers, and not to mention LA Girls further on down the street.

More cops are never the answer to Homelessness. Permanent Supportive Housing. Residential Care and investment in the T.L. is the answer, which has never really happened.

Walk down Market Street and see all the boarded up business'. The Merrill's on Market near Jones carried just about everything you needed and it closed. There is no real grocery store in the T.L. There is Safeway up on Market and Castro, but for the most part you see Liquor Stores and Fast Food Joints, but real food market.

Glide Church lost is support of the Methodist Church because of the social outreach it did. What hotel is right down the street for Glide, the Hilton. Business is NOT interested is creating a safe, stable T.L. They want to force the Homeless out, period end of sentence.

Breed needs to pay more attention to the people who voted for her than business interests who seem to dictate her policies.

Yes the closest it comes now is a Whole Foods that just opened up a few weeks ago on Market and 8th, across from SF Public Library. Not sure how that helps the most down and out, but if one has EBT, Whole Foods takes EBT, as it should.

I think they put this there, really to compete with the Market on Market, a little local joint which is a block away on Market and 9th. One of the most expensive groceries in the city, and next door to Twitter and Dolby. So WF is very likely drawing away that crowd.

Safeway is actually on Market and Church and there is yet another Whole Foods across from it, which has been there for 12?-15 years? I don't remember. What's interesting about Whole Foods is, as easy as it is to make fun of it, they have comparable prices to Safeway for the same brands, sometimes cheaper. A smaller local, Asian-owned grocery has been on the Church side of Safeway for years. One of their two stores had to close down because of the pandemic. Their prices are higher than both Safeway and Whole Foods, BUT you can get some Asian groceries there.

So..I guess the food shopping in the TL kind of improved over the past couple months, with the addition of a real grocery store chain. But there are NO banking services there TMK, except for the ATMs in the mom and pops. Such destitution just blocks away from like you say, the Hilton and fancy places like Grace Cathedral. Don't get me wrong, I like Grace Cathedral and a friend of mine's father, who was an Episcopal priest, had a Diocese job in the years working up towards his retirement.

The Episcopalians know how to party, I can tell you that!

Yeah that's always the dilemma once people get in office. I'm watching something very similar happen to the Board of City College, which is populated with some of the most fiery student activists from years ago. Now they just vote in everything the money interests want for the college. It's hard not to get cynical.

Opinion: What Grand Rapids must do to stop needless police shootings
Law enforcement culture is grounded in strategies that demand full assertion of authority and control over “civilians” by any means and at all costs. Nevertheless, when it comes to pursuit of suspects who flee, a growing number of police departments are concluding that such challenges to authority need not prompt officers to try to “win” the contest.

Baltimore, Cincinnati, Chicago and other cities have policies that require officers to balance the need for pursuit against the risk of harm to officers, the suspect, and the public. Officers are further required to determine whether there are alternatives to a foot chase for purposes of apprehending a suspect, particularly in cases where the suspect’s identity is known......

......Police officers are trained to be soldiers. They learn to shoot, grapple and intimidate. Within their highly-charged environment, too often an “us against them” mentality takes hold, and certain communities – particularly communities of color – become enemy territories to be occupied and dominated simply because of unfounded stereotypes about Black criminality. It is a certain prescription for violence.

Breaking down a police culture that promotes confrontation, conflict, combat and “the chase” will require different types of officers. Most emergencies do not require soldiers. More often, they require mental health professionals, drug treatment specialists, social workers, mediators, paramedics, auto mechanics, and professionals from various other disciplines.......
The level of destruction and violence is inconsistent with any kind of a livable future.

Federal authorities on Monday said they will not criminally charge Jason Van Dyke, the former Chicago police officer convicted of murder in the 2014 shooting death of Black teenager Laquan McDonald.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Chicago said in a news release that the decision was made after consulting with the McDonald family and that the "family was in agreement not to pursue a second prosecution."

Police asked a Black couple to prove they owned their store. The fallout sparked a racial reckoning in this quiet Bay Area enclave - SF Chronicle

Tiburon's pretty, but I would never want to live there...
On a late summer night two years ago, Tiburon police asked Yema Khalif to prove he owned YEMA, the local clothing store that bears his name.

At the time, Khalif and his wife, Hawi Awash, were the town’s only Black business owners. The fallout from that August 2020 encounter shoved the quiet coastal enclave to the center of a racial justice moment that began just months earlier with George Floyd’s murder. But after initially threatening a $2 million lawsuit in federal court, the couple says they were able to achieve meaningful reforms by staying out of the courtroom and directly engaging with town officials.

On Tuesday, the couple stood in front of their store in Tiburon’s casual but tony downtown to announce those reforms. Changes include police policy and training updates as well as the formation of a Citizen’s Advisory Panel to provide a forum between residents and police; one of the store owners is expected to serve as a member.

The couple also received a $150,000 payment, a portion of which they say will go to a scholarship fund they run through the store.

Khalif and Awash haven’t reached a settlement with the neighboring city of Belvedere, which also had an officer at the store that night. David Anderson, one of their attorneys, said Belvedere’s leaders weren’t up for the conversation that those in Tiburon were. A message left with the city manager wasn’t immediately returned Tuesday.

Khalif said he and his wife never wanted to involve the courts.

“For this to happen was very unfortunate and still is unfortunate,” Khalif said during a news conference in front of his store. “We hope (the Tiburon agreement) is going to be something that other cities, other counties can actually copy.”

Black Owners of Trburon's Yema Shop Settle For $150.000.00 & Police Reforms.

https://www.marinij.com/2022/04/19/blac ... 20occurred.

The Black owners of a business in Tiburon have settled a racial profiling claim with the town for $150,000 and the establishment of a police advisory council.

The settlement was announced Tuesday outside of Yema, the downtown Tiburon clothing boutique where the incident occurred. Married co-owners Yema Khalif and Hawi Awash addressed a crowd of residents, activists and media, with their attorneys David C. Anderson and Charles Bonner.

We are not begging. We are demanding,” Khalif said. “We’re going to speak out. We’re going to be vocal and we are going to show how people deserve to be treated.”

The settlement stemmed from an interaction between police officers and Khalif at about 1 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2020. Khalif, Awash and their friend were inside the store, located at 10 Main St. in Tiburon, when Tiburon police Officer Isaac Madfes approached and questioned them.

The officer was later joined by a supervisor, Tiburon police Sgt. Michael Blasi, and Officer Jeremy Clark of the Belvedere Police Department. Khalif argued with the police over whether the people inside the store needed to prove their right to be there.

Tiburon has been pretty much a White Enclave for many years, much like Sausalito. The few minorities seen in Tiburon have usually been in the service industry, house cleaning, cooking and taking care the kids.

Whites have seen themselves reflected in Tiburon's Police Department. At the time of August incident, Khalif and his wife were the only African-American Store Owner's in Tiburon. The cops over reacted. White Store Owner's do not have to proof that they own or manage a store, but the African-American Couple did.

At Patrick Lyoya's funeral, the Rev. Al Sharpton calls for action and accountability
The Rev. Al Sharpton, who delivered a fiery eulogy, began by noting that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, the same date 54 years earlier, that Lyoya was killed.

Sharpton's message was a rallying cry, urging the crowd to take action to "stand with good cops who uphold the law," and to stand against police killing people who are not a threat.

He also called upon the Justice Department to investigate the shooting, saying "we need a federal investigation."

"We don't want local politics" to interfere in a proper investigation, Sharpton said.

"This cannot end today," he told an applauding crowd, demanding officials release the name of the shooter. "To add insult to the injury they're telling this family, they will not release the name of the one responsible for this death."

Sharpton said that when Blacks are accused of crimes, their names are often released.

"Every time we’re suspected of something, you put our name out there,” Sharpton said. “How dare you hold the name of a man that killed this man? We want his name.".....
...."We are worth more than car tags," Sharpton said at the funeral. "How dare you pull your gun about car tags?

"We were not created to be your boys and girls," Sharpton added. "We were created in the image of God. ... Enough is enough. ... We're going to get justice.".....

Good on him.

“We are worth more than car tags…”

Car tags, bottles of orange juice, a supposed counterfeit $20 bill, a bag of potato chips, standing and minding our own business…

How embarrassing that this country needs to be reminded of this, month in and month out.

Whites have seen themselves reflected in Tiburon's Police Department. At the time of August incident, Khalif and his wife were the only African-American Store Owner's in Tiburon. The cops over reacted. White Store Owner's do not have to proof that they own or manage a store, but the African-American Couple did.
THIS is how you stop this. Putting the occasional bad cop in jail wont do it. BANKRUPT the city or county involved or damn near bankrupt them and all of a sudden shit will change quickly.
I sigh in your general direction.
