Yeah, the Republicans in the Senate were wasting Powell's time pontificating about that, as if the Fed had anything to do with it. One of them used his time to give a tirade on the matter.

Severe thunderstorm slams Southern California, bringing intense hail

Video captured the moment an icy onslaught of hail rained down on cars amid thunderstorms threatening Southern California on Thursday afternoon.

Large pieces of hail can be seen pelting the roofs and windows of parked vehicles in Porter Ranch, quickly transforming the parking lot into a wintry landscape.

Yeah we got the tail end of that. Should have seen me covering up the leak in my wife's car and getting the trash cans out just as the storm grazed our location. Lucky I was watching the radar and made it inside before someone turned on the shower.

Except for some thunder and about 5 minutes of absolutely torrential rain, we missed all the scary parts. Those were, as always, in the hills where the convection gets cranked to 11.

We caught the tail-end of your tail-end of the storm. A couple of showers throughout the day but nothing to have to worry about. BTW, we normally get about 12 inches of rain a year and we're already at 10.36 inches; nearly 3 inches above normal for this time of the year.

Hay Tire suffers severe damage from Saturday storm

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – An automotive shop in West Ashley suffered damage Saturday morning amid severe storms that moved across the Charleston area.

“Apparently it was raining harder than usual, and the windows started to buckle and then it snapped over,” says Vice President of Hay Tire, Bill Sukula. “These windows on this side kinda just came apart, came out of the building.”

Massive cicada season due to hit parts of the U.S. this year. There are two types of cicadas (who knew?); one that emerges every 17 years one one that emerges every 13 years. This year, for the first time in 221 years, will emerge at the same time.
The cicada will emerge in the Midwest and South affecting states from Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Virginia, the entire South except Florida.

For those not familiar with cicadas, these are insects that make a loud noise throughout the day and there are so many it's almost unbearable. The female lays its eggs in the tree's bark and when the eggs hatch the nymphs fall to the ground and burrow their way to the tree roots and live off the tree sap damaging the tree.
2024 will be a banner year for cicadas—and homeowners desperate to get rid of them. There are two types of cicadas in the world, one that emerges every 17 years and another every 13 years. In 2024, both are coming up from the ground for the first time in 221 years.

This means billions of cicadas will be emerging, largely in the Midwestern and Southern United States.

The two types hate each other. HATE. There is going to be cicada carnage everywhere, it's going to be really, really ugly.

Iceland volcano erupts: See images of flowing lava, smoke from fourth eruption in three months

Iceland has declared a state of emergency after a volcano erupted for the fourth time in three months.

The eruption opened a fissure almost 2 miles long between Stóra-Skógfell and Hagafell mountains on the Reykjanes Peninsula, according to Iceland's Meteorological Office, which had been warning for weeks about the eruption due to magma accumulating underground.

I wonder whether this time it will take out the USAF comm station in Reykjavik. I understand the town is starting to look more like the Lahaina harbor.

Record heat index of 62.3C scorches Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro

A heatwave stifling Brazil has set new records with Rio de Janeiro’s heat index hitting 62.3 degrees Celsius (144.1 degrees Fahrenheit), the highest in a decade, weather authorities say.

The heat index measures what a temperature feels like by taking into account humidity. The actual maximum temperature in the city was 42C on Monday, the Rio Alert weather system said.

It's equinox time! 8:06 PM Pacific, 11:06 PM Eastern, 0406 UTC, sun is directly over the equator. Already the lines between day and night on the map are completely vertical. Happy spring time.

The arctic polar vortex has reversed. Over a period of a few days, one of the planet's major weather circulations has completely changed direction.

This is not connected with sunspots, it just happens. It's connected to rapid stratospheric warming over the poles. The only remarkable thing about this one his how fast it happened and how strong it is.

So far there has been no effect on Northern Hemisphere weather, though if it lasts there certainly will be one. Right now it's not expected to last.

Interestingly, this has caused the "ozone hole" to disappear, and right now polar ozone is way more than normal. That's not expected to last either.

If we get some goofy weather this spring, all this might have something to do with it.

Spring? We are still working on fall. Apparently winter is finally going to make a showing tonight with 3 to 5 inches of snow. Yay!

So far it's been temps in the 40's and 50's and barely below freezing at night. We received some rain at the beginning of winter but without frost it soaked in or run off. Since then, nothing to speak of. No snow pack and dry as a bone. So ya, if ya think it was bad for the barge industry last year we ain't seen nothing yet.

So far, it's a pretty normal spring in LA. March came in like a lamb, but now it's supposed to briefly act like a lion as a couple of storms come through. I'll take the rain over the alternative which is dry hot winds, pollen, and headaches, and a whole lot of people getting ecstatic in your swollen puffy face because where they come from it's still snowing.

hi friends, nice to seeya. havent typed much in ages. LOL.

currently im on a higher plateau, the lower lands roll around, up and down, many mounds of dirt small and Huge
which once were the bumps not washed away by the rolling and roiling waters of the great Western Inland Seaway.
phew long sentence. there is still a good river running thru this valley, i doubt it ran during seaway days since mountains
were clearly still forming then.

a bit higher up the hillside is canyon land stuff...no flowing water. whats there is the large and small creek beds left
by large amounts of water pouring thru there zillions of years ago. they may see some Mt water runoff if theres ever any snow.
one ridge over is closed due to snow. otherwise there is no snow, the large creek beds were made zillions of years ago.
....on this hillside are rocks varying sizes, on that hillside aint no rocks. same valley.

what i do see is...land the seaway affected, washed over back n forth like a tide, in and out of the valley.
leaving these massive land formations all over the place.
at one time there were hoodoos here...big ones. i never knew that one before. we had been hiking the N/NM hoodoos
recently, getting to know them.
pretty amazing stuff there....i picked small 1-2" rocks from zillion year old hoodoos...if i didnt keep them theyd hit the
ground becoming one of the Many small rocks broken off the hoodoo over a zillion years. hoodoos are a trip.
they are very old.

50million years ago there was a big lake SW WY...NW CO..way east UTAH. not salt lake.
this is how old the hoodoos are. and the small rocks they hold tight til the sand washes off and another rock hits the dirt.
...these rocks are only around the hoodoos...not..>>>over there. thats plain sand.

well finally saw some snow on a ridge line deep in the mts. it should look like that 5mos+ a year. it doesnt.

there is so much cactus its surprizing since this was and still is...and was...cattle land, grazing land. it grew grass.
now it grows sand spurs, cactus. ick.

once there were ponderosa pines out there now juniper and cacti is all that can survive the heat.

as a kid back east i walked forests where the pine needles were a carpet. six inches of pine needles alllll over the forest floors.
those pine needles protected the moisture...they held it in so the roots and the tree were always getting sufficient root moisture.
cut down those trees and lose the carpet.

i cant recall when i last saw...a pine needle. the few struggling now dying pinions shed a few needles but theyre way dead.
the ground is just dirt now. no protection just dirt.
