Residents and holidaymakers have fled towns and villages in France as fires are whipped up by high winds and tinder-dry conditions in several countries in Europe.

More than 10,000 people have been forced to leave the south-western Gironde region in the past few days.

Dozens of fires are burning in Portugal and Spain where temperatures have surged above 40C.

At least 281 deaths in the two countries were linked to the heatwave.

Doorbell camera captures scary moment in extreme heat for UPS driver

A UPS driver collapsed briefly on the porch of a Scottsdale, Arizona, home while conducting a delivery amid sizzling heat on July 14.

Footage from a Ring doorbell owned by resident Brian Enriquez captured the startling occurrence. The driver appeared to be feeling the effects of the heat as he swayed from side to side, package in hand. When the driver set the package down on the doorstep, he slouched to the side, seemingly unable to get back on his feet. After resting for a moment, the driver managed to get on his feet and ring the doorbell before walking away back into the hot sun.

Mysterious life forms discovered in centuries-old Hawaiian lava caves

Hundreds of years ago, the volcanic processes that created the islands of Hawaii also formed a network of underground tunnels and caves.

They’re cold, dark and full of toxic gases and minerals. So, pretty much inhospitable to most forms of life.

It's that time of year in AZ and NV. Give it a couple more weeks and it'll slop over into SoCal.

I'm going to take a pass on "law furniture," though the vision of the judge's bench, witness stand, and jury box flying through the air is a compelling one.

Appalachian flooding deaths set to climb; more rain forecast

JACKSON, Ky. (AP) — Trapped homeowners swam to safety and others were rescued by boat as record flash flooding killed at least 16 people in Kentucky and swamped entire Appalachian towns, prompting a frenzied search for survivors Friday through some of the poorest communities in America.

Authorities warned the death toll would likely grow sharply as search efforts continued. The rain let up early Friday morning, but some waterways were not expected to crest until Saturday and more storms were forecast to roll through the region early next week.

VP Kamala Harris Visits FIU to Address ‘Urgent' Climate Crisis and Announce $1B in Climate Resiliency Projects
Harris spoke at Florida International University where she detailed the Biden administration's efforts to respond to natural disasters
https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/vp- ... s/2824590/

Vice President Kamala Harris addressed climate change during her visit to Miami Monday, calling it an “immediate” and “urgent” crisis.

Harris spoke at Florida International University where she detailed the Biden administration's efforts to respond to natural disasters.

"The science is clear," she said. "Extreme weather will only get worse, and the climate crisis will only accelerate."

During her visit to FIU, Harris announced that more than $1 billion in grants will be made available to states to address flooding and extreme heat exacerbated by climate change with the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other officials.

While visiting the National Hurricane Center before the grant announcement, Harris said Monday that disasters like the Kentucky flood and California wildfires show “how immediate, how current and how urgent the issue is of addressing the extreme weather that we’ve been experiencing around the country and the world.''

Rainwater everywhere on Earth unsafe to drink due to ‘forever chemicals’, study finds

Rainwater almost everywhere on Earth has unsafe levels of ‘forever chemicals’, according to new research.

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of human-made chemicals that don’t occur in nature. They are known as ‘forever chemicals’ because they don’t break down in the environment.

Doctor calls survivor in DC lightning blast ‘absolute miracle’

"An absolute miracle" is what doctors are calling the lone survivor in last week’s deadly lightning strike that killed three people standing across the street from the White House, the woman's family said.

Lying on the ground in Lafayette Square on Aug. 4, her heart suddenly stopped by the lightning bolt, 28-year-old Amber Escudero-Kontostathis was revived with the help of timely intervention as nearby Secret Service agents rushed over with defibrillators, according to emergency officials.
