Climate change activists in England are doing major damage to the cause by vandalizing precious art works. Their premise is that too much money is spent to buy art and not enough to prevent human extinction. This has a vague validity on the surface, but any significant thought on the matter indicates that it's two separate areas of interest, and there's plenty of money for both if people want to spend it on both.

So far, all it's done is damage the credibility of people who have dedicated their lives to raising consciousness on the need for more financial outlay to deal with climate, and the need for some fundamental behavior changes that so far most people reject.

Those who think vandalizing works of art is going to bring attention to climate change are idiots because all that will be focused on is what was done to the paintings.

It's worse than that, because it's hypocritical. You can't express your desire to save civilization by destroying that which makes us civilized.

Those who absolutely positively cannot express themselves in a way that generates sympathy for their cause have no business advocating for it.

My home borough

How Hurricane Sandy helped gentrify Brooklyn

This week marks a decade since Superstorm Sandy struck much of the eastern seaboard of the United States — from Florida to Maine — causing $65 billion in damage.

It is the largest Atlantic hurricane on record to hit the East Coast with powerful winds stretching an estimated diameter of 1,100 miles. Some of the storm’s most extensive damage was concentrated along the shoreline of New Jersey and New York, caused by a surge producing waves as high as 32 feet, flooding critical infrastructure and drowning entire neighborhoods. Sandy displaced thousands, destroying 69,000 residential units in New York City.

The last solar eclipse of the year can be seen today

(CNN) — When the moon passes between the sun and Earth for the second time this year, it will block most light from the sun and cast its shadow onto our planet, resulting in a bright, fiery crescent shape in the sky.

This solar eclipse will be happening this Tuesday and will be visible in parts of Greenland, Iceland, most of Europe, northeast Africa, and western and central Asia. It will last for nearly four hours beginning at 5 a.m. ET, or through the early afternoon most of for those in the Eastern hemisphere.

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake strikes near San Jose.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Seven Trees, near San Jose, California on Tuesday.

Preliminary information from the USGS says the quake was 6.9 kilometers (4.2 miles) deep and hit around 11:42 a.m. PT.

About 100,000 people received an advanced notification from the Earthquake Warning California app, the state’s early warning system, before shaking started, according to Brian Ferguson, deputy director for crisis communication and public affairs for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.

“Advance notice varied from two seconds for those very near the epicenter to 18 seconds for those in the San Francisco,” Ferguson said.

Preliminary reports do not indicate any significant damage or injuries, the emergency services office told CNN.

I was in a rather intense staff meeting. It was a little surreal.

I've been in a number of earthquakes and when it happens everyone becomes quiet and just look at each other. Normally, anything under a 5.0 doesn't get a rise from me.

At least 1 dead, multiple people missing in Oklahoma after more than a dozen tornadoes hit 3 states, officials say

(CNN) — At least one person was killed and multiple people are missing after tornadoes hit Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas late Friday, damaging homes and knocking out power for thousands as officials launch search and rescue efforts.

The person who died was in McCurtain County in southeastern Oklahoma, which suffered significant storm damage after a possible tornado hit the city of Idabel, county emergency manager Cody McDaniel said. There are “multiple missing people,” he said.

An election day blood moon lunar eclipse

Last total lunar eclipse for three years arrives Tuesday
...The total lunar eclipse will be visible throughout North America in the predawn hours — the farther west, the better — and across Asia, Australia and the rest of the Pacific after sunset. As an extra treat, Uranus will be visible just a finger’s width above the moon, resembling a bright star.

Totality will last nearly 1 1/2 hours — from 5:16 a.m. to 6:41 a.m. EST — as Earth passes directly between the moon and sun.

Known as a blood moon, it will appear a reddish-orange from the light of Earth’s sunsets and sunrises......

Election Day Blood Moon won’t happen again until 2394

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — On Tuesday, we will witness the last total lunar eclipse — also called a Blood Moon — until March 14, 2025. But, that’s not the only exciting thing about it.

“This is the first time in U.S. history that we’re enjoying an Election Day Total Lunar Eclipse. It’s never happened before and won’t happen again until 2394,” according to Almanac.com.

A Blood moon lunar eclipse coinciding with an election with historic implications on female reproductive rights and bodily autonomy and now this extreme rare pink aurora.

Crack in Earth's magnetic field triggers extremely rare pink auroras witnessed in Norway
Want to know what the night sky looks like after a solar storm smashes into earth and rips a hole into the planet’s magnetic field?

The combination of cosmic events led to a rare explosion of strikingly vivid pink auroras the filled Norway's night sky. The unusual colored light show lasted for around two minutes and was caused by a crack in Earth's magnetic field, enabling highly energetic solar particles, known as solar wind, to enter into the atmosphere on Nov. 3, according to Spaceweather.com.......

.......Varik said he has conducted over 1,000 tours of Norway’s auroras as a guide for over 10 years, but these were the strongest hues of pink and purple he’s witnessed in his entire life......

West Texas earthquake causes damage hundreds of miles away

MENTONE, Texas (AP) — A strong earthquake that struck a remote area of the West Texas desert caused damage in San Antonio, hundreds of miles from the epicenter, officials said.

University Health said Thursday that its Robert B. Green historical building was deemed unsafe because of damage sustained from the quake, which hit Wednesday in a remote area near the New Mexico border. The historical building is more than 100 years old and has been closed off for safety reasons, University Health said.

Artemis snapped a nice picture of our little blue planet just before it disappeared behind the moon. Talk about thinking globally. Check this one out. Sort of restores perspective.

Cool.

Have you been watching the space station fly over your house this week?

No, city lights and the clouds have made seeing pretty bad, plus we're on a hill and they keep building shit where the sky used to be. I've seen it before, though, and it's pretty spectacular. Mostly we see Jupiter... can't miss it right now.

Also keep in mind that the asshole musk is not the only billionaire putting shit into low earth orbit. There's another wannabe global comm system that's putting up antennas the size of baseball infields, and they are said to potentially achieve a magnitude of something like -10 in some cases. (In star magnitudes, the negative side is brighter, since you are counting backwards.) -10 is damn near as bright as the moon.

Zero. It's an international venture of several government space agencies. There's the US (NASA), Europe (ESA), and Japan that I know of. Russia of course threw a hissy fit and dropped out. China is a major player in space, but it has its own space station now, and it's getting pretty bright too.

Musk seems more interested in going to Mars. I think he should, as long as it's one way, and he doesn't take any means of communication with Earth.

Well, musk was in a place to take over from NASA when some president or other decided to stop funding the space shuttle program. SpaceX got our astronauts to and from the ISS when no one else except Russia was capable of doing it, and even then there were good reasons not to trust Russia.

Since then a couple of other companies have come up with the capability, and the Artemis vehicle could likely also be adapted to the task, though it would be wasteful, and right now NASA has other priorities. One is to put the first woman and the first person of color on the moon. They can look down at all the bigots on this little insignificant blue planet in that vast dark void we call a universe, and go neener neener neener, but they won't because they'll have better things to do, like seeing if there's enough water to set up a Mars launch base near the lunar south pole.
