It's not even just drugs. It's drugs where it takes longer to list the side effects than it does to tell what the snake oil is supposed to be good for. It's amazing how many of these spiels end with, "If death occurs, call physician immediately."
It's good that I could watch the Artemis mission on C-SPAN. NO COMMERCIALS. We finally got something for our taxes.

I got something else for my taxes. I now have a photo of the Earth rising behind the Moon on my cell phone.
Otherwise... well, let's see. It's Wednesday. Are we going to block the Strait of Hormuz today, or is it the day we let tankers through? Or both? Or neither? Do we still think the Pope is a subversive from a hostile "country" off in a corner of Rome, or are we doing lunch with him? Is the war over or only getting started? Are we still sending ICE to airports to stand around looking mean because they can't pay security because DHS is still not being funded, or are they good guys again?
Government by how you felt on the potty this morning is seldom decisive government.

I-25 reopens in northern Colorado after semi crash sparks brush fire early Wednesday morning
Northbound lanes of I-25 were closed in Northern Colorado for several hours early Wednesday morning after a crash involving two semis that sparked a brush fire. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the closure was between Colorado Highway 14 and exit 271- Mountain Vista Drive.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, troopers responded to a report of a crash between two semis around 5:24 a.m. near mile marker 275. Investigators said both semis were traveling in the same direction. No injuries were reported.
Powerful typhoon barrels over remote US islands in Pacific: "Hitting us hard"
Typhoon Sinlaku — the strongest tropical cyclone on Earth this year — relentlessly hammered a pair of remote U.S. islands in the western Pacific Ocean early Wednesday local time with extremely powerful winds and heavy rain, with residents reporting tin roofs being torn apart.
Authorities said they were in the early stages of assessing the damage left by the storm, which made landfall on Tuesday. Electrical outages were widespread and roads impassible in some areas, with images and video from the islands showing uprooted trees, downed power lines and flooding.
Saw that. That typhoon is a summbitch for this early in the year, but it continues the anomalous climate conditions in the Pacific that have characterized this year ever since mid-January.

'We are missing data': NWS weather balloon changes scrutinized as tornados hit Midwest
A tornado outbreak near Kansas City, Kansas, on Monday night came as a surprise.
At least three injuries were reported after at least five tornadoes developed in areas southwest of the city. Several homes were damaged, trees were downed and recreational vehicles were overturned.
That's the trump method. Cut the funds of the programs we started to cope with climate change, then encourage the consequences of climate change to get worse. Of course, he has a different name for it, something like tax relief. He leaves out the part about only his rich buddies getting that.
Frankly, I gave up on climate change when car buyers worldwide started making cultural statements which looked more like clinical cases of Military Vehicle Envy.

Japan earthquake live: Tsunami warning issued as huge 7.7 tremor hits coast
A tsunami warning has been issued with mass evacuations underway after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the Japanese coast.
The tremor struck off the northeastern coast of the country this afternoon (April 20) and the Japan Meteorological Agency has warned a tsunami as high as three metres could hit in Iwate prefecture and parts of Hokkaido.
I've declared a cease-fire on the other thread and moved the discussion back here. And a necessary discussion is definitely called for.
The facts remain. Every day now is the hottest, windiest, rainiest, coldest, driest, worst day ever recorded somewhere. Ice caps are disappearing, oceans are rising, pandemics are more frequent, species are turning up in new places or vanishing from the old ones, epidemics are a yearly occurrence, habitat is vanishing, and half the people on the planet are in some kind of trouble and/or migrating somewhere else where they're treated like vermin. We're in a catastrophe, and our leaders are telling us that everything's fine, just keep fighting wars over oil and turning forests into shopping malls and casino resorts.
I fled to the Weather Channel when I couldn't take the crap on the Nooz any longer, but the Weather Channel is far scarier right now. Records are broken daily. Everywhere on the planet is too hot, too cold, too rainy, too dry, too SOMETHING that would have been unheard of 50 years ago. Humans seem ever more like a liability than an evolutionary breakthrough.
In other words, we met the enemy and it is us.
We cannot escape the inconvenient fact that climate is related both as a cause and effect of the current class war that our politics have become. It's time for action. Fewer Internet posts, more directed actions up to and including civil disobedience if needed.

Scientists Warn A Critical Atlantic Current Could Weaken Faster Than Expected, Reshaping Global Weather
A massive ocean current system that helps regulate weather across the globe may be weakening faster than scientists thought, and it could reach critical thresholds sooner than once believed.
That could mean extreme changes in our weather patterns affecting everything from our water supplies and farming to temperatures and storm intensity.
Already started, especially in the Pacific, where everything's bonkers. These currents interact with the jet stream, and as we saw this "winter," the jet stream can cause some very memorable weather.
Also the water temperature changes a lot more slowly than the air temperature does, and it has a tremendous effect on climate. An anomaly off Hawaii caused no winter in the western US in January. Now a similar temperature anomaly seems to have brought on the US fire season several months early. We're talking about dinosaur extinction level stuff here.

Multiple scientists who serve on an independent board established to guide the nation’s nearly $9 billion basic science funding agency were terminated from their positions Friday by President Donald Trump.
Members of the National Science Board, which helps govern the National Science Foundation, were dismissed in a message from the Presidential Personnel Office thanking them for their service, according to screenshots shared with The Washington Post: “On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I’m writing to inform you that your position as a member of the National Science Board is terminated, effective immediately.”
Illinois leads nation in tornado, hail and wind reports so far in 2026
The state of Illinois is the new severe weather champion of the nation, data from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) reveals. The numbers reflect an unusual weather pattern so far this spring.
Illinois has had 80 tornado reports through April 19. That's almost twice as many as the runner-up, Mississippi, has with 43. A tornado outbreak last Friday has generated 27 confirmed tornadoes in Illinois alone, and storm surveys are ongoing. The outbreak spanned an area from Oklahoma to Wisconsin, dropping at least 48 tornadoes and sparking two house fires near Chicago.
Georgia wildfire doubles in size, mandatory evacuations possible
A fast-growing wildfire tearing through southern Georgia doubled in size over the weekend, local officials said, spreading over dozens of square miles and potentially forcing mandatory evacuations.
The Highway 82 fire, discovered on April 20, continued to burn in Brantley County, about 100 miles southwest of Savannah and some 35 miles north of the Florida state line.

The Grunion are coming ashore this weekend. The Grunion are a silver colored fish about five to six inches long and are native to Southern California and Northern Baja California. During the late night and early morning high tides, the female Grunion come ashore and wiggle their bottom half into the sand and lays her eggs and the males wrap themselves around the females and deposits sperm. Both then return to the sea and in about 10 days, the eggs hatch and the high tide takes them into the ocean.
For those not from Southern California may think the Grunion is similar to Snipe hunting which is sending people out with bags to catch an imaginary bird but in fact the Grunion are real. I've been on the beach, late at night, catching Grunion back in the early 70s. My older brother and I would catch them and save them for the next day and use them for bait off the Imperial Beach fishing pier. To catch Grunion, you cannot use a net or any other device but you have to catch them with your bare hands. What we did was to dig a hole in the sand above the high tide water line and fill it with water. As we caught the Grunion, we'd toss them in the the hole with water. When we had enough, we removed them from the hole and put them in a bucket and took them home. https://coronadotimes.com/news/2026/04/ ... s-may-1-4/
Temperatures averaged well above normal by 7 to 8 degrees. This was the warmest April on record for many locations in our region, including 4 of our 5 climate sites. 80s were a common occurrence with Paducah and Evansville registering 15 such days. An average April typically sees around 4 to 6 days reaching 80. There were only 8 days that finished below normal, the 5th-7th, 18th-20th, and 29th-30th. Temperatures dipped into the 30s several of these nights. There were 6 daily record highs and 24 record warm lows across our 5 climate stations for the month.
Precipitation was drier than normal across most of our region with amounts only ranging from 2 to 5 inches for most areas, which was to 1 to 3 inches below normal for April. Highest totals were more focused across southeast Missouri and southern Illinois with lowest amounts in west Kentucky from the lakes eastward and southwest Indiana. The highest observed amount in our forecast area was 6.32” at a CoCoRaHS Station 1.7 miles ENE of Sikeston, MO. Drought worsened across the Quad State with extreme (D3) levels being introduced across southern portions of southeast Missouri and western Kentucky by the end of the month. Most of the rest of the region experienced moderate to severe drought conditions by the end of the month (although some much needed heavier rains did occur on the 27th and 28th which helped across the north half of the area).
I never did see a grunion run, but when surfing I'd often see them swimming around in the water. They do exist, and they do come onshore to spawn in the sand, and indeed you are only allowed to catch them with your bare hands.
The Hotel Del Coronado finally restored their huge wooden building that dates to the 1880s. It looks great. It's probably the best surviving example of late flamboyant Victorian architecture in the US. It's become trendy for tourist attractions in other cities to imitate it. Otherwise, they just don't make fun buildings like that any more.
The nearby naval air base is where they took the Artemis II astronauts and their capsule after they got back from lunar orbit. The house near the bridge from San Diego that I've been known to mention here, which was known for pro-Trump and anti-everyone-else signs had nothing showing. Maybe The Donald really is losing his core constituency.
The sand castle guy in front of the hotel got his walking papers after saying something bad about Republicans, and he's no longer a fixture on the hotel's beach. Too bad. Apparently he moved farther north to a beach more popular with locals, and he's now free to say what he thinks of the current bunch of crooks that the good voters of America stuck the rest of us with.
It's still a good hideout for people from the movie business in LA.
