The evacuation goes to Brentwood, but it stops at Sunset. Santa Monica is not affected...yet. More likely it would go into Bel-Air, but the wind is not favorable. We'll have to see what is still extant tomorrow. Here the lights are flickering the way they do and it's likely only a matter of time before the power goes like every year when this happens.

im not sure we've ever on tv news seen a fire situation like this. srsly.

ive newsd a lot of CO fires and other places like WA where I was Mandatory evacd and left horses
behind along the treeless grassy stream.
in CO i watched a major fire out my large living room windows, i was above it, could see it all.
my horses and black labs had ashes on them. fear of embers was great.

by morning the blanket SOCAL devastation is, will, leave so many people homeless. sure some have money
can do hotels. many dont.

animals. the dead animal count will be shockingly enormous. wild and tame, so many animals
are now dead done gone. brutal. just brutal. many left behind in the fast evac, small and large. gone.
broken hearts.

if youve not been near a major fire be glad. you never forget.

karma is a bitch.

It's the worst disaster since the earthquake in 198-whatever. This morning is surreal. LA is in a state of shock. Nooz conference just wrapped up... sounded more like one of those nuke attack exercises they still do.

Speaking of nukes, POTUS is still here, can't get a flight out despite the best efforts of the US military. In fact, the Osprey that's usually Marine One made three passes low over our house trying to get an approach lined up in this absolutely apocalyptic wind storm that was supposed to stop but instead got worse. Those Osprey V-22 things are LOUD... set off the neighbor's car alarm all three times. The aircraft finally got down at the SMO airport, still there awaiting VIP arrival... no, even if I knew I wouldn't tell you where the "package" is.

Firefighting tankers are back up over the Palisades, but pilots report that the wind simply blows away their drops and very little of them actually reach the fire. Nooz choppers can't fly until POTUS leaves, nooz is on the ground in the fire zones sticking mikes in anyone's face they can get to stand still long enough, asking the same dumb questions that contain no real request for useful information.

Typical: "How does it FEEL to lose your $7 million home and everything in it that you worked and slaved all your life for?" (I would at that point tell them, "YOU wouldn't like it either, so get out of my face and fuck off," and since anything live is on a time delay I suspect that it wouldn't air.)

Palisades is simply gone... I don't mourn it.... the rich destroyed it 20 years ago, nothing left but mansions and very repellent people. Middle class all pushed out, but don't be sorry. If they're anything like my parents, they got millions for the land and some of it went to our generation's inheritances.

Found my old street on the fire aerial photos... as of midnight it was unburned, but it hardly matters because you can't recognize it from the air. The bulldozers got it all. No, not the fire dozers, a different earlier holocaust caused by the influx of the billionaires from countries known for oil and terrorism. That gooey black stuff we fight wars over built it all. There used to be about eight houses in the area, just normal people, but now now it's four of those decadent 30,000 sq ft 3-story mansions with pools and tennis courts and private helipads. There used to be a hill that I played on... dug a hole and had a pretend fort, like all little boys should. This hill is gone... leveled off, now part of an oil sheik's back yard recreational complex.

Now four major fires all at once. Water pressure is dropping, just about everything's closed, street traffic looks like a holiday. We're advised to stay inside keeping windows closed. Air is toxic, all reddish gray. Wind just keeps getting worse, picks everything up and dumps it anywhere it pleases. Lots of time in the house to work on the go bags, though they were already quite comprehensive.

Fires are in Pacific Palisades (the apocalypse, the promised doomsday, now 4000 acres, billions in property damage), also Sylmar, Pasadena/Altadena, something about the Santa Ana "River" (no water in it this year), and in the Sepulveda Basin. Said basin should be a lake this time of year but no rain, so it's a dusty little rec area... closed needless to say.

Pasadena/Altadena fire is huge, bigger than Palisades, getting into the national forest land up above. JPL has been evacuated. Rose Bowl is now being used to house large animals... lucky the game was last week.

We're advised to keep streets clear for emergency vehicles. No problem here. The outside is toxic.

Palisades Fire now 15,832 acres. Large areas of Santa Monica and Malibu are being evacuated. The fire has transitioned to unified command with CalFIRE, LA County, and LAPD. Heard somewhere that it's now the largest fire ever that started within the LA city limits.

LA power company now says 48 hours before a crew can work a power failure call. Large outage a few blocks down from us. Our lights blinked but stayed on. We have a standby generator if this changes. I understand Los Angeles, the city where you are on your own on the best day, let alone the worst.

why hasnt the US Military been called up for this CA fire disaster?

in WA when the fire began, with winds, they took One Hour to call up the air force, get planes up
and work the fire. good thing too since winds suddenly went to 70mph headed straight for the canyon.

in CO, they were having to fly to cheyenne for slurry since they ran out but not enough run out for
them to call up the multitude of military in the area.
the rule then was: No mil help until local has run out of ALL resources.
yah, that wasnt working out too well in modern climate times.

military folks get pretty pissed when their help is ignored in times and disasters like CA.

The nearest AF base is March Air Reserve Base which is about 80 miles from the fire. I doubt the base has the aircraft that can be adapted to fight fires. The Navy is sending 10 helicopters with water-delivery buckets to help fight the fire. The thing hampering the aircraft right now is the high winds. President Biden has authorized the military to provide firefighting personnel and capabilities. I know Camp Pendleton has aircraft that can be converted quickly to fight fires.
The Defense Department is sending 10 Navy helicopters to help fight wildfires in California, U.S. officials said Wednesday. The helicopters will be equipped with water-delivery buckets, the White House and the Defense Department said in separate announcements. The Pentagon was unable to say from which installations the helicopters would be deployed or when they would arrive in the area.

“Right now, we can’t even get assets up in the air because the fires are so bad and because the winds are so bad,” said Sabrina Singh, deputy press secretary for the Pentagon.

The helicopters were authorized following President Joe Biden’s direction to the Defense Department to provide firefighting personnel and capabilities after massive wildfires roared through the Los Angeles area Wednesday, killing at least two people as desperate residents escaped through flames, hurricane-force winds and towering columns of smoke.

Cal Fire is reporting 55 wildfires and 26,978 acres burned. There are four major fires in the LA area with the Palisades Fire bruning15,832, acres and the Eaton Fire, near Altadena, burning 10,600 acres. Both fires are 0% contained. CBS Evening News is saying the winds will be changing over the next 24 hours which could direct the fire to areas not yet burnt.

Arson Suspects Caught In Santa Monica? Video Surfaces Amid Los Angeles Fire Crisis

As multiple fires ripped through the Los Angeles County area on Wednesday, social media users shared videos to claim that civilians were 'lighting fires' in 'non-burning urban areas' in Santa Monica. The Los Angeles Fire Department and local law enforcement departments are yet to respond to these clips.

Professor of Neurobiology and Ophthalmology at Stanford Medicine, Andrew D Huberman, first posted a video to make the claim. He said such civilians were spotted at 302 Pico in Santa Monica.

'Pushed the system to the extreme': Los Angeles fires unchecked amid scarce water supply
....One after another, the million-gallon tanks firefighters tapped into to douse the deadly Los Angeles wildfires went dry, leaving them without enough water to fight the flames, officials said Wednesday.

The admission comes as residents have wondered how the wildfires — whose causes are still under investigation — got so out of hand and turned into one of the most devastating Los Angeles fires in recent memory, killing at least five and destroying at least 1,000 homes, businesses, and other structures....

OK, reality check time.

Smoke has cleared enough to fly news choppers over the former Pacific Palisades and coastal Malibu. Destruction starts somewhere around Santa Monica Canyon and goes well up almost to Surfrider State Beach. At least 10 miles, probably more like 15. That's how much coastal communities are destroyed, gone, kaput, Hiroshima-d. World War II newsreel footage, except in color. All along the ocean and miles inland in places. Even a chopper takes forever to fly over it all.

Gone. Three days ago, highly populated suburbs. Today, smoking piles of, well, stuff, with the occasional "human remains," the nice word for charred bodies.

Here there's a wall. Here there's a hole in the ground... this must have been a condo but all you see is the foundation. Places where I knew people, gone. Places where we had family dinners, gone. The lake shrine where they had George Harrison's funeral, gone. The glamorous inn next to it where movie people would shack up, gone. The monolithic apartment buildings on what had formerly been the first movie back lot in LA, gone.

Oh, wasn't that the Pacific Gardens? Can't tell, think so. Three days ago, there was a wall of apartments there. Now there is some twisted scorched steel like that picture of the dome in Hiroshima. Farther up, that might be the beach house where I went to a party once. Might. Can't tell. Can't even see where it was. Just piles of smoking whatever.

Officially, 17,234 acres. 2321 fire fighters and 1947 civilian personnel on this fire.

And there are four other fires going, all uncontrolled.

And I knew it was coming, when the weather lined up in the worst case scenario right about when most people were ooooohing and aaahhhhhhhhhing at the Rose Parade. And I didn't say anything because people don't want to hear it. The first thing out of my mouth was OH SHIT when the nooz intoned that the fire had started in the Palisades Highlands... worst possible place. Worst case scenario, the one people didn't want to talk about. I never got over them building the damn thing in the first place. I was a scarred veteran of LA fires by then... knew they were asking for disaster, once again people didn't want to hear it, so I shut up.

Some of those people are now dead.

Anywhere west of Santa Monica and south of the ridgeline and north of the ocean... dead. A city has vanished from the Earth.

Sheriff: 20 arrested for looting amid LA-area fires; DA weighs in on crime

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Twenty people have been arrested in the various Los Angeles-area fire zones for allegedly looting in the ravaged areas, authorities said Thursday as they vowed to crack down on any criminal activity tied to the disaster.

Sheriff Robert Luna said roughly 400 department personnel have been deployed in the fire areas and are patrolling for looters. He said it is a misdemeanor crime for anyone to be in an evacuation area without authorization, and committing a crime in such an area can be a felony. Luna said he is instructing deputies to aggressively enforce those restrictions and arrest people found in the burn areas.

There's nothing to loot along the coastline as I described it. You want a distored melted mess that used to be an old air cooled VeeDub, you're welcome to it. Would make a great museum exhibit.

Mostly it's a problem in the truly vast evacuation areas that didn't burn, where the streets still go somewhere that isn't a smoking pile of ash. LASD and LAPD have picked up a few looters that didn't run away fast enough, and they have been summarily packed off to jail.

Long time ago, I made it to treatment stage on a movie script about what could happen if the worst case materialized, which of course it was bound to do eventually. I never got very far on the project. It was clear that, at the time, no one would have believed a frame of it.

Now it would have to be a documentary.

Oh, BTW, these incomprehensible impossible fires have now burned an area the size of Manhattan. It only took two days. All the way from Battery Park to Inwood, from the 79th street boat harbor to the UN headquarters. When I say nuclear scale, I mean it.

We should wall off the whole damn thing, and make it a national park dedicated to awareness of human stupidity.

Conifers grow at higher altitudes. What you get in LA is that scrubby smelly rather unsettling chapparal. It has evolved to burn. All the sunshine makes it secrete flammable oil. By fall you can smell it, and some human instinct tells you that you're in their land and not the other way around, but unfortunately our capacity for denial is limitless.

The part that makes LA a very iffy place to live is that it has a natural cycle of wet and dry "winters." I used quote marks because LA has no real seasons. About once every 5 years or so it doesn't rain AT ALL, and the air currents shift in a unique way. The santa ana wind has its way with LA, and all that oily brush dries out and ignites. Any spark will do it, sometimes self-ignition will do it. This makes the brush burn, but also it makes the seed pods explode, so you get your land cleared and seeded for the next generation of brush. All a natural cycle.

It worked great until silly humans decided to live here.

To my knowledge, there are no fires in Santa Monica. They might have been talking about Santa Monica Canyon, but that is technically still in Los Angeles. The city line runs along the top of the bluffs on the south side of the canyon. Authorities panicked, for good reason, a couple of days ago and evacuated one small section of Santa Monica proper. They also put three other areas on alert. However, there is no fire there.

These videos are typical Internet disinformation. People post stuff like that to stir up trouble. Possibly it gives them something to watch on TV.

Two new fires starting in LA County. One is out in Calabasas , NW of Malibu. The other is in the national forest. They are named the Creek Fire and the Hills Fire, though I am too dizzy to remember which is which. They are being spread by 40 MPH winds which are predicted to increase.

The county sheriff and several local PDs have requested National Guard support. The governor has agreed. 400 troops are enroute.
