An 2019 investigation by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News prompted this week’s massive disclosure about church leaders implicated in sex abuse cases.

A wave of outrage in response to the series rocked the Southern Baptist Convention, prompting its Executive Committee to hire an outside firm to investigate. The result was Sunday’s release of an explosive, nearly 300-page report that found church leaders had covered up numerous sex abuse cases and belittled survivors.

Among other key findings: SBC leaders kept a secret list of ministers accused of abuse — all the while insisting to the Texas reporters who first inquired about the scope of the problem back in 2019 that such records would be impossible to compile, according to Chronicle investigative reporter John Tedesco. (On Tuesday, the leadership said it was planning to release names of the accused on Thursday.)

DiBlasi did not answer when CBS3 knocked on the door of his Marlton home where neighbors say they saw Evesham Township police arrest him last Tuesday.

At Dave Ramsey’s company, some sex outside marriage was OK, court documents show - Religion News Service

Newly released documents detail the Christian finance company's scrutiny of employee sex lives — and what it lets pass.

Founded by Ramsey in1992, the company offers financial advice — famously, stern warnings to avoid debt — with a Christian foundation. Much of its revenue comes from the personal finance courses and books it sells to churches and from his daily radio show.

The biblical ethic extended to Ramsey Solutions’ employees: Ramsey personally enforced the company’s “righteous living” rules, which, among other things, bar premarital and extramarital sex. Ramsey Solutions has been sued by former employees; one who was fired after higher-ups learned she was pregnant without being married, and another who alleges she was terminated for being a lesbian. (In the latter case, the company settled.)

But Hogan was a star, with his own slot on the company’s radio programming and multiple books. Rather than fire Hogan, Ramsey and other leaders let Hogan go out on the tour while setting up a “restoration plan” for his marriage.

That plan failed. And Ramsey began to worry that Hogan had been lying to him.

In his deposition, Lopez described another Ramsey employee who got married and then told her boss she was several months pregnant. She was fired as well. In all, more than a dozen Ramsey employees were let go for violating righteous living policies.

“We suspected she had violated company policy, but we didn’t know it until that moment,” Lopez said in the deposition.

The company does not consider all sex acts outside of marriage to be unrighteous. While intercourse outside of marriage is cause for dismissal, oral sex is not, said Ramsey and other leaders in the depositions.

“Our operating board chose sexual intercourse outside of marriage as the line at which a person must leave and the assumption is termination at that point,” longtime Ramsey board member and Human Resources Committee Chair Jack Galloway said at an August 2021 deposition. “Things short of that are more case by case and more at least open for discussion.”

Ramsey Solutions leaders admitted in a deposition that the company’s “righteous living” rules did not bar premarital sex in writing. While the rules are sometimes described as drawn from biblical standards, several company leaders were not able to cite any Bible verses to support their views on marriage and sex.

“There seems to be a pattern of Dave Ramsey believing abusive men with power who benefit him, whether it’s Mark Driscoll, Bill Hybels, or my ex-husband, and depicting women who allege misconduct as crazy and un-Christian,” Melissa Hogan said. “In my opinion, this is consistent with Dave’s own behavior so that does not surprise me. But what grieves me most is that he does it in the name of Jesus Christ.”

The victim says she was 13 when she first met Shiftlet.

"He slowly treated me more like a girlfriend. As a young teenager, I knew something didn't feel right. I knew that I felt uncomfortable.," she recalled. "And when he would do different things and touch me in ways that were inappropriate, he would ask me if it was okay. And if I said yes, he would keep doing them. And if I said no, he would ice me out emotionally,"

According to federal prosecutors, one of the crimes the youth leader pleaded guilty to happened with a girl who was 14 at the time he met her at Denton Bible Church.

In 1997, when the victim was 15 years old, Shiflet led an eighth-grade camping trip to the Buffalo National River in Arkansas. He isolated her from the group, sexually assaulted her and told her not to tell anyone.

According to the church's May 1 letter, Nelson's first clues about Shiflet came before Shiflet left Denton Bible Church to go to work for another church.

Youth workers reported seeing Shiflet spending time alone with girls in his car, home and a hotel room. The letter says two youth workers raised concerns directly to Nelson.

Nelson told Shiflet's supervisor that he should not spend time alone with girls, but no one disciplined Shiflet.

Another warning came in 1999. The church's letter says a college intern reported her discomfort and red flags to the wife of a youth pastor. Again, leaders did not discipline Shiflet. The college intern concluded that she had not been believed.

In 2001, the letter says Denton Bible turned down Shiflet’s request to be promoted to the high school pastor position because of "his pattern of being alone with girls."

But Pastor Nelson did not share that information with a church in Little Rock, Arkansas, where Shiflet applied for a job as a youth pastor. In fact, Nelson recommended him.

Bible Church churches are white-Evangelicals.

A Denton church is drawing national attention after hosting a conference that declared “wokeness” the “most insidious and dangerous and pervasive ideology” ever encountered by the church’s senior pastor.

The Rev. Tommy Nelson, Denton Bible Church’s senior pastor, and the Rev. Charles Stolfus, an associate pastor at the church, were among the panelists at ”Wokeness & the Gospel” on Friday and Saturday. The conference at Denton Bible was an examination of “wokeness,” a progressive political movement that has surged on social media in the past decade. The movement is largely preoccupied with social justice, especially promoting anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia and anti-ableism.

The two-day conference drew a small protest by Denton Interfaith Community Action, a grassroots group that formed to respond to the rhetoric of the conference, the founder said.

“We couldn’t find another group that was willing to find an intersection of social justice and faith in this instance,” said founder Nathan Graham, a Denton County resident and a Lutheran. “We felt this was really harmful rhetoric coming into the community. We felt that it required a response from people of faith.”

Differing definitions
Denton Interfaith Community Action includes local members of United Methodist, Episcopal and Lutheran churches, as well as a local Buddhist, several Unitarian Universalists and Jewish people. Graham said the distaste for rhetoric that demonizes social justice brought the small group together. They rode to Denton Bible Church on Saturday evening, where Graham said a security official and a police officer approached them in the parking lot and told them they were trespassing.

“When we protested on Saturday, our every move was watched. We came with our van with all of our materials, and we pulled into the very first space. It isn’t even connected to the rest of the parking lot. They waited until we were over that line to serve us with a warning. It just showed what vindictive view of the world and the Bible they have,” Graham said.

The group stood near the entrance of the church holding signs that read “Love your neighbor as yourself” and “Unity over creed.” Drivers on University Drive could see the protesters — and Graham said they heard a few honks and saw quite a few people giving a thumbs-down gesture.

GOP State Senate candidate arrested and charged for sexually abusing young girl for years

Joel Koskan, a Republican running for the South Dakota State Senate, has been charged with felony child abuse after he allegedly groomed and raped a young family member for years, The New York Post reports.

The abuse of the young girl began in 2014 and continued for at least six years. He could also face counts of rape, sexual contact with a child under the age of 16 and aggravated incest-related child, according to a probable cause statement shared by the Mitchell Republic.

"The Senate hopeful began grooming the child when she was 12 years old by having her sit on his lap, kissing her and giving long hugs, according to the court docs," The Post's report stated. "The child thought the behavior was “‘normal things’ that families were supposed to do,” an investigator wrote in the document. She realized what Koskan was doing to her was abusive at a summer camp she attended at age 14 when counselors spoke about inappropriate physical contact with adults."

Koskan even reportedly installed a camera in the girls room so he could watch her from an app on his phone. The girl said he regularly touched her inappropriately and began forcing sexual intercourse when she turned 17.
