Montana law that limited abortion providers struck down by court

A Montana law that limited abortion providers was ruled unconstitutional by a district judge, blocking a law that would have stopped advanced practice registered nurses from being able to perform early abortion services.

“The State has failed to demonstrate a compelling interest in limiting abortion providers to licensed physicians and physician assistants,” Judge Mike Menahan wrote in his ruling. “State has not clearly and convincingly demonstrated a medically acknowledged, bona fide health risk which justifies interfering with a patient’s fundamental right to choose her own health care provider.”

Republicans help defeat Arizona abortion pill ban

PHOENIX (AP) — Three Republicans in the Arizona House defected from a united GOP front on Thursday to defeat a measure that would have banned manufacturing or prescribing medication that would cause an abortion.

The bill that unexpectedly failed would have eliminated the choice used by half of the people who have abortions in the state, leaving a surgical procedure as the only option.

ZDoggMD Deletes Twitter Account After Dust-Up With Science Museum

Podcaster and comedian ZDoggMD, a.k.a. Zubin Damania, MD, became ensnared in a Twitter tornado Friday over his post that criticized a San Francisco children's museum policy that he thought required children 12 years of age and older to be boosted as a prerequisite for admission.

After his tweet, Damania incurred a fury of invective from all sides, and a corrective response from the California Academy of Sciences. The Academy said his tweet misstated its policy. Instead of barring unboosted children and others 12 years and up, the Golden Gate Park museum does allow people 12 and older who are fully vaccinated but not up to date with their booster to "bring a recent negative test instead."

Falcons' Calvin Ridley suspended indefinitely, at least through 2022 season, for betting on NFL games

Calvin Ridley stepped away from the Falcons -- and the NFL -- after just five games in the 2021 season, citing mental health reasons. The star wide receiver won't be returning anytime soon. A week before the official start of the offseason, the NFL announced Monday that the 27-year-old Ridley has been suspended indefinitely -- at least through the 2022 season -- for betting on NFL games during his absence from football last season.

"(Ridley's illegal) activity took place during a five-day period in late November 2021 while Ridley was not with the team and was away from the club's facility on the non-football illness list," the NFL said in a statement. "A league investigation uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way. Nor was there evidence suggesting any awareness by coaches, staff, teammates, or other players of his betting activity."

Human Rights Campaign Rejects Disney Donation ‘Until Meaningful Action Is Taken’ on ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill

The Human Rights Campaign has rejected The Walt Disney Company’s donation to its efforts to protect LGBTQ+ rights, demanding that the company take “meaningful action” to combat Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation.

“The Human Rights Campaign will not accept this money from Disney until we see them build on their public commitment and work with LGBTQ+ advocates to ensure that dangerous proposals, like Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay or Trans’ bill, don’t become dangerous laws,” Joni Madison, interim president of the HRC, said in a statement on Wednesday evening. “While Disney took a regrettable stance by choosing to stay silent amid political attacks against LGBTQ+ families in Florida — including hardworking families employed by Disney — today they took a step in the right direction. But it was merely the first step.”

Judge sentences Jussie Smollett to 150 in prison and 30 months of felony probation for lying about being the victim of a hate crime.
Former "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was sentenced Thursday to 30 months of felony probation, including 150 days in jail, and ordered to pay restitution of more than $120,000 and a $25,000 fine for making false reports to police that he was the victim of a hate crime in January 2019.

After the judge announced his sentence, Smollett lowered his face mask and said he was innocent. "Your honor, I respect you and I respect the jury, but I did not do this," the actor told the judge, before turning to the court. "And I am not suicidal. And if anything happens to me when I go in there, I did not do it to myself. And you must all know that."

Vladimir Putin reportedly fires eight generals

Russian President Vladimir Putin has fired eight of his generals since the start of his ‘special operation’, according to Oleksiy Danilov, the head of Ukraine’s security council. Putin is rumoured to be livid over the slow advance on Kyiv by his military forces, coupled with the estimated high losses, which has led to him wielding the axe on his commanders.

The FSB security service has also apparently felt Putin’s anger too, with claims that the Russian leader is fuming over reports handed to him prior to the invasion which informed him that Ukraine was weak, and would roll over once attacked. Several of his high-ranking commanders have also been killed in action.

California nurse loses licence after treating and dating actor Stevie Ryan before 2017 suicide

A nurse practitioner who transitioned from treating actress Stevie Ryan to having an intimate relationship with the YouTube star - just months before her 2017 suicide - has had his licenses revoked by California’s Board of Registered Nursing.

Gerald “Jay” Baltz, a psychiatric NP - meaning he underwent additional training to fulfill more doctor-like duties such as prescribing medication - first began treating Ryan in 2015. Within two years, he’d not only begun a sexual relationship with the actress, who hosted a podcast about mental health, but she had also taken her own life.

Crossover voting will remain in Wyoming after party affiliation bill dies in Legislature

The Donald Trump-endorsed crossover voting bill died Tuesday in the Wyoming House after it was not considered by a legislative deadline.

The bill aimed to end same-day party affiliation changes, meaning voters would not have been able to switch parties in roughly the three months prior to a primary. If the measure had become law, voters may not have known for certain who was running before having to register with a certain party.

EU formally approves new sanctions as Russia bans Biden, Blinken from entering country

The European Union has formally approved a new barrage of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, which include bans on investments in the Russian energy sector, luxury goods exports and imports of steel products from Russia.

UK froze Abramovich's assets at least a week ago. He's dead in the water, as is the Chelsea football club, which not that long ago was winning championships in Europe's weird cup thing.

London is making the situation in New York look absolutely placid. As you can imagine, since London was a cash sink for Russian gangsters, there have been some major economic happenings. For a start, they're starting to confiscate the gangsters' mansions, which didn't look like much compared to the pictures of stars' digs in LA, but trust me, they were a big, big deal priced in the hundreds of millions of US dollars. Every oligarch had a pied a tierre in London. No more. This alone changes everything.

I haven't been in London since covid put a lid on everything, but when I was there, the central parts of Westminster and the actual hoidy-toidy upper-class City (sort of like Wall Street on steroids and with a hereditary upper class) were another world. People routinely threw around the kind of cash that made anything that happens in NYC look like Detroit, and trust me, that's a LOT of money. One of my favorite pastimes was just standing on corners with my 200mm lens and clicking off photos of every dream ride from Italy and Germany that you can otherwise only see at the auto show back here in the US.

All this has been hit big time, and the effect might just resemble Kyiv without the bombs and tanks. The party's over for that crowd, and they have only Putin to blame.
