The Obamas are leaving Spotify for a new multiplatform podcast deal
Barack and Michelle Obama won’t be signing a new podcast deal with Spotify, Bloomberg reports, marking a major departure for the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground Productions. “The company is instead talking to other distributors about a deal worth tens of millions of dollars, among the most-lucrative in the podcasting business,” according to the report.
Amazon’s Audible and iHeartMedia are among the “several” companies Higher Ground is in negotiations with for a new deal. Higher Ground had talked to Spotify as well, but it “declined to make an offer,” Bloomberg says. Higher Ground apparently wants to be able to make multiple shows and release them on platforms simultaneously, which would go against Spotify’s typical exclusives-based strategy.

Texas junior college pitcher tackles hitter during home run trot, prompting brawl: Video
WEATHERFORD, Texas -- Tackles are usually in football, but you wouldn't be able to tell that judging by what happened on the baseball field in Weatherford, Texas, on Wednesday after a pitcher charged at and took down a hitter during a college game.
Now the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference has announced that it suspended both players and many more from both teams due to the resulting brawl. The batter also was suspended for two games because he was ejected for taunting.

I wish him and his family the best in the future. These decisions are always difficult. N.Y.'s top court tosses congressional map over Democratic gerrymandering
New York’s top court invalidated the state’s congressional map Wednesday, ruling that Democrats' redistricting process and resulting maps violated the state constitution.
The 4-3 decision is a blow to Democrats who would most likely have won three additional seats in the U.S. House based on the political boundary lines, and it is likely to help Republicans secure a modest lead in national redistricting.

Say goodbye to Ida: Name of deadly hurricane retired
Ida will join the ranks of retired storm names after the Category 4 hurricane claimed dozens of lives and wrought widespread destruction across the nation, even when weakening into a tropical rainstorm, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Hurricane Committee ruled Wednesday.
The panel maintains the rotating lists of names that are used in each tropical cyclone basin, only altering the list to remove a name in the case of a particularly deadly or costly storm. Hurricane Ida met the criteria two-fold.

Former tennis great Boris Becker sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for flouting the terms of his bankruptcy.
Earlier this month, the 54-year-old Becker, a former world No. 1 and three-time Wimbledon champion, was found guilty of four offenses relating to his bankruptcy, including failing to disclose, concealing and removing significant assets, the Insolvency Service said.
The assets he concealed included €426,930.90 (around $450,000) -- which was transferred to several third parties -- a property in Leiman, Germany, and 75,000 shares in Breaking Data Corp, according to the Insolvency Service.
Becker "was selective in the declaration of his assets. When it suited him, he made full disclosure; when it didn't, he didn't," said prosecutor Rebecca Chalkley, who had urged the judge to pass a custodial sentence, according to Reuters.

LA Dodger pitcher Trevor Bauer suspended for two full seasons violating MLB's domestic violence policy.
Trevor Bauer received a record two-year suspension from Major League Baseball on Friday for violating its domestic abuse policy, a significant penalty for an elite pitcher who now finds his future in the game in doubt.
Yet unlike the 15 players previously suspended under MLB's domestic violence policy, Bauer will contest his suspension to the end. He has appealed MLB's suspension and is ineligible to pitch until an arbitrator upholds, reduces or overturns the league's ruling. Since MLB and the MLB Players' Association jointly agreed to its domestic violence policy in 2015, all 15 players have accepted or negotiated suspensions ranging in length from 15 to 162 games.
"In the strongest possible terms, I deny committing any violation of the league’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy," Bauer said in a statement released by his representatives. "I am appealing this action and expect to prevail. As we have throughout this process, my representatives and I respect the confidentiality of the proceedings."
Bauer, 31, signed a three-year, $102 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021, months after winning the National League Cy Young Award in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He won eight of his first 17 starts with the Dodgers but in June was accused by a San Diego woman of assault during two sexual encounters; Bauer countered that their interactions were "wholly consensual."
