Lawyer probing Brett Favre, ex-Gov Phil Bryant in $94M Mississippi welfare fraud scandal fired by state

The lawyer tasked with probing ex-NFL quarterback Brett Favre, former Governor Phil Bryant and others in a sprawling $94 million Mississippi welfare fraud scheme has been fired by the state.

Brad Pigott, a former U.S. attorney leading the investigation for the Mississippi Department of Human Services, was informed of his termination by MDHS Director Bob Anderson on Friday. He told Mississippi Today that he wasn't given cause for his dismissal but was told that it wasn't related to the quality of his work. He believes that it was politically motivated.

Hulu & Disney were for the red team from the very start they own them.

Democratic candidates want to run ads on climate change, abortion, and guns. Hulu won't let them.

Disney, with its well-burnished family-friendly image, is no stranger to playing it safe on both sides of the aisle. But after drawing Republican ire earlier this year over LGBTQ issues in Florida, the company's once again in the political crosshairs and now it's the Democrats turn to be angry.

This time Disney's in the hot seat over Hulu and its "unwritten" advertising policies. Hulu, one of the few paid streaming services that currently runs ads, is blocking advertisements that cover some of the party's core issues.

Once they've got everyone hooked with all manner of subscriptions to everything, they'll start putting ads in all of it. The freebies are bait to get the public strung out on subscriber media. Old urban heroin dealer trick. The freebies will go away, the way we see hulu and Netflix moving at present. Ads make media go.

Right now, it's still possible to block ads on hulu, but you get a black screen for the duration. Ultimately they'll check your software at logon and you will get the all too familiar, "Please turn off all ad blockers to enjoy this service." No free lunch in media. It costs too much to produce it.

As soon as anything becomes ad-driven, it becomes discriminatory. The big advertisers vote with their media buys. Their vote counts for more than yours.

The sooner people get it that Internet is part of the problem, the easier the next 30 years will be.

GOP Support Among Seniors, a Key Trump Base, Drops Dramatically: Poll

The Republican Party has suffered a heavy loss of support from senior voters in recent months, a key demographic for the party in November's midterms and for Donald Trump's presidential ambitions, according to polls.

A recent survey conducted by CNN and the research firm SSRS found that 47 percent of those aged 65 and over said they would vote for a GOP candidate if the midterm congressional election for their district were held "today," with slightly more people aged 65 and over saying they would vote for a Democratic candidate (49 percent).

Russia to drop out of International Space Station after 2024

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia will pull out of the International Space Station after 2024 and focus on building its own orbiting outpost, the country’s new space chief said Tuesday amid high tensions between Moscow and the West over the fighting in Ukraine.

The announcement, while not unexpected, throws into question the future of the 24-year-old space station, with experts saying it would be extremely difficult — perhaps a “nightmare,” by one reckoning — to keep it running without the Russians. NASA and its partners had hoped to continue operating it until 2030.

White Sox’s Tim Anderson suspended by MLB for contact with umpire

CHICAGO (AP) — Major League Baseball suspended Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson for three games and fined the All-Star an undisclosed amount Saturday for making contact with plate umpire Nick Mahrley during an argument.

Anderson was in the White Sox lineup hitting leadoff Saturday against Oakland after he appealed the suspension, and he’ll remain active until his appeal is heard. It’s the third time he’s been disciplined by MLB in the past year, including a one-game ban overturned on appeal earlier this season.

A Jan 6 rioter, turned in by his son, and a member of the Three Percenters sentenced to 87 months in prison.
A Texas man who joined the US Capitol riot armed with a holstered pistol and threatened his own children to keep quiet about his role has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

Guy Reffitt, 49, was found guilty in March on five felony counts, including obstruction of an official proceeding and interfering with police in a riot.

His sentence is the longest imposed on any of the US Capitol rioters.

The sentence Judge Friedrich handed down was slightly below what is recommended by federal guidelines. She also declined to apply a domestic terrorism enhancement - the first requested in a US Capitol riot case.

NFL docks 1st-round pick from Dolphins, suspends owner Stephen Ross after Tom Brady tampering investigation

The NFL handed down its sentence following a six-month-long investigation into the Miami Dolphins' alleged tampering with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton this past offseason, as well as team owner Stephen Ross allegedly financially incentivizing tanking to former head coach Brian Flores.

The league announced the Dolphins must forfeit their first-round pick in the 2023 draft as well as their third-round pick in 2024. Ross was also fined $1.5 million, suspended through Oct. 17 (the first six weeks of the season), indefinitely removed from all league committees and uninvited from all league meetings until next offseason.

Rudy Giuliani is unlikely to face charges in federal lobbying probe

Rudy Giuliani is unlikely to face federal charges stemming from his dealings in Ukraine, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Giuliani, the former New York mayor and personal attorney for Donald Trump, has been under investigation by Manhattan federal prosecutors for nearly two years. He was a key figure in the events that led to Trump’s first impeachment, accused of relying on Ukrainian officials and members of parliament to try to dig up dirt about Joe Biden as he ran for president.

Israeli airstrike kills 2nd top Islamic Jihad commander

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel said Sunday that it killed a senior Islamic Jihad commander in a crowded Gaza refugee camp, the second such targeted attack since it launched its high-stakes military offensive against the militant group just before the weekend.

The Iran-backed militant group has fired hundreds of rockets at Israel in response, and the risk of the cross-border fighting turning into a full-fledged war remained high.

Former police officer gets 7-plus years in prison in Jan. 6 case

An off-duty Virginia police officer who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, with a fellow officer was sentenced Thursday to more than seven years in prison, matching the longest prison sentence so far among hundreds of Capitol riot cases.

Former Rocky Mount Police Sgt. Thomas Robertson declined to address the court before U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper sentenced him to seven years and three months in prison. Cooper also sentenced Robertson to three years of supervised release after his prison term.

Judge: Walgreens contributed to San Francisco opioid crisis

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Walgreens can be held responsible for contributing to San Francisco's opioid crisis for over-dispensing highly addictive drugs for years without proper oversight and failing to identify and report suspicious orders as required by law.

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said the pharmacy chain “continually violated what they were required to do under the federal Controlled Substances Act,” failing to track opioid prescriptions, preventing pharmacists from vetting prescriptions and “nor did they see the many red flags of physicians and others who were dramatically over-prescribing.”

New York scraps word ‘inmate’ in state law

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York has amended several state laws to remove the word “inmate” and replace it with “incarcerated person” to refer to people serving prison time.

The changes, signed into law Monday by Gov. Kathy Hochul, are intended to reduce the stigma of being in jail. Prison reform advocates have said the term “inmate” has a dehumanizing effect. Prisoners say it can feel degrading when jail guards refer to them as inmates, especially in front of their families during in-person visits.
