Corporate naming rights & sporting arenas don't mix it's a total money waste.

Report: Miami Heat’s arena sponsor files for bankruptcy

Back in 2021, a popular cryptocurrency exchange named FTX Trading purchased the naming rights to the basketball arena that the Miami Heat call home.

In recent days, the company has come under incredible controversy and accusations of mismanaging money from investors, and on Friday, the company did what many expected it would do by filing for bankruptcy.

82 schools have removed their racist namesakes since 2020. Dozens now honor people of color.

It wasn’t until her junior year that Ashley Sanchez-Viafara learned the truth behind her high school’s racist namesake.

The Thomas Chambliss Williams high school in Alexandria, Virginia, was named after a longtime district superintendent who served during the civil rights era — and did everything he could to preserve segregation.

Bad choice of words

Tim Hardaway apologized for comparing a player's defense to rape

Tim Hardaway issued an apology in the same game where he made a terrible comparison on a broadcast.

After a tough defensive play in the third quarter between the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs, Hardaway said "ya'll thought that was great D, I thought that was just raping him." After a bit of back-and-forth banter between Hardaway and his fellow broadcasters Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond, Hardaway added that "I think he should have called the police on that."

Glad they’re getting rid of these relic names to genocide and atrocities.

I ran across this interesting piece today about Henry Ford’s name all over Detroit.

Failed South Dakota House candidate arrested on rape charge after election loss

A state House candidate in South Dakota was arrested on a rape charge just days after he lost his race against the incumbent — his mother.

Bud Marty May, 37, was arrested in Box Elder around 4 a.m. Sunday and charged with second-degree rape, court filings said. The criminal complaint alleges May used "force, coercion, or threats of immediate and great bodily injury" against the victim.

Beer to be banned at World Cup stadiums

Beer will not be permitted at World Cup stadiums in Qatar, the tournament’s organizer announced on Friday.

“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters,” FIFA, the international soccer governing body, said in a statement.

Elizabeth Holmes sentenced to 11.25 years in prison, three years supervision, and fined a $400 million special assessment.
Elizabeth Holmes, founder and CEO of the collapsed Silicon Valley blood testing company, Theranos, has been sentenced to 11.25 years in prison plus three years supervised release for financial crimes she committed while running the once-high flying venture.

Holmes was also fined a $400 million special assessment. Holmes must surrender to custody on April 27, 2023. Holmes is expected to appeal.

The judge presiding over Holmes’ trial and sentencing said the landmark case, one of the most closely watched in Silicon Valley history, should be a cautionary tale for startup founders who are willing to overhype the capabilities of their products.

“I suppose we step back and ask what is the pathology of fraud? Is it the refusal to accept responsibility or express contrition in any way?" Judge Edward Davila said. "Perhaps that is the cautionary tale that will go forward from this case."

Paramount Terminates Deal To Sell Simon & Shuster to Bertelsmann

Paramount Global announced that it terminated its agreement to sell its Simon & Schuster publishing business to a subsidiary of Bertelsmann for $2.2 billion.

The deal, reached in November 2020, ran into regulatory problems, with the Department of Justice filing suit to block the sale. The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled in favor of the Justice Department on October 31, saying the sale would lessen competition for publishing right to books expected to be best sellers.

Associated Press fires reporter over Russian missile story

The Associated Press fired one of its top investigative journalists on Monday after the newswire was forced to retract one of his stories that wrongly blamed Russia for an explosion in Poland.

Last week, AP journalist Jim LaPorta cited an unnamed U.S. government official who blamed the explosion in Poland on a missile that came from Russia. The story was widely reported by newspapers, websites, television and radio stations who picked up the AP’s reporting before U.S. and Polish officials confirmed the explosion was actually linked to Ukraine’s missile defense system.

Details on what exactly happened remain sketchy, but Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury confirmed to The Republic on Tuesday that Kugler, 56, was not present during Arizona’s 38-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Estadio Azteca and was sent back to the Valley beforehand.

Balenciaga to Sue Producers of ‘BDSM’ Teddy Bear Campaign for $25 Million, Calling Actions ‘Malevolent’ or ‘Extraordinarily Reckless’

The luxury fashion house Balenciaga filed court papers Friday announcing a $25 million lawsuit against the production company behind a widely criticized ad campaign featuring photos of children holding teddy bears in bondage.

A two-page summons with notice does not specifically mention the teddy bears, but it alludes unmistakably to the controversy, calling the producers’ actions “inexplicable,” “malevolent, or at the very least, extraordinarily reckless.”

Former New York Mets infielder Asdrubal Cabrera suspended 35 games in VWL

Former New York Mets infielder Asdrubal Cabrera has learned his fate.

Cabrera had infamously begun a benches clearing brawl back on November 19 when he attempted to channel his inner Rougned Odor. Carlos Castro had belted his third homer of the game against Caribes de Anzoategui, leading to a bat flip while he said something to the Anzoategui bench. Cabrera met Castro just after he rounded first with a clothesline, causing the chaotic scene to erupt on the diamond.
