Suspect arrested after a fire damages a historic Mississippi synagogue
A person was taken into custody late Saturday after a fire ripped through a synagogue in Mississippi, heavily damaging the historic house of worship in what authorities say was an act of arson.
No congregants were injured in the blaze, which broke out at the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday, officials said. Photos showed the charred remains of an administrative office and synagogue library, where several Torahs were destroyed or damaged.

Trump-appointed prosecutor who pursued indictments against his foes is leaving post
WASHINGTON (AP) - Lindsey Halligan, who, as a hastily appointed Justice Department prosecutor, pursued indictments against a pair of President Donald Trump’s adversaries, is leaving her position as her months-long tenure has now concluded, Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday night.
Halligan’s departure from the role of interim United States attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia came as multiple judges were casting doubt on her ability to remain in the job legally following a court ruling two months ago that declared her appointment illegal. She was appointed in September to a 120-day stint, which concluded Tuesday.

The Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Brand Was Sold In A Massive All-Cash Deal — Here's For How Much
If you live in New York, Nathan's Famous in Coney Island might as well be a synonym for "hot dog" because of its food stand presence all over the city. On a larger scale, it's best known for the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest held on the Fourth of July every year. Behind the scenes, there have been some changes going on inside the hot dog company, including a recent buyout: Nathan's Famous has just been sold to the tune of $450 million.
The new owner of Nathan's Famous is the U.S. meat packaging titan, Smithfield Foods, but the two companies were already heavily intertwined. Since 2014, Smithfield Foods, based in Smithfield, Virginia, already held a license to make and sell Nathan's-branded hot dogs across the U.S. and Canada (and in Sam's Club stores in Mexico). As of this new deal, Smithfield is now the full owner of Nathan's Famous, and bought it up for a slightly premium price of $102 per share. And that $450 million total is all in cash.

All these buyouts only make classism worse in this country. Soon everyone will be working for the oligarchy in one way or another.

Longtime NFL Announcer Stepping Away Amid Controversy
Longtime NFL announcer Paul Allen is stepping away amid his controversy.
Allen, a longtime NFL announcer for the Minnesota Vikings, sparked controversy with his comments on the Minnesota protestors last week. Allen joked that the protestors in Minnesota are probably getting paid more money due to the cold weather. The longtime NFL announcer was referencing the longstanding conspiracy theories that many protestors are actually paid by bigger corporations and organizations.

Anyone who thinks the only organized resistance to big money interests in politics comes from the big money itself is too stupid to be taken seriously. People will believe anything, however.

Amazon to close all Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go.
The era of Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go is officially over. The e-commerce giant announced it's closing all 72 locations after a decade-long experiment. Amazon will convert some locations into Whole Foods stores and plans to open more than 100 new Whole Foods locations in coming years.
The branded stores failed to deliver a distinctive customer experience with a scalable economic model, according to The Wall Street Journal. Amazon Fresh offered a more mass-market selection than Whole Foods but struggled to win customers despite high-tech shopping carts and cheaper prices. Amazon Go's checkout-free convenience stores also never resonated on a large scale, with the company already trimming its fleet by more than half since 2023.

Despite all the assurances that the economy has never been better, it still hasn't recovered from covid. You really see it in LA. I still go to places on Melrose, once the young adult fashion capital of the west, and at least half the stores and restaurants folded in that period. At least half. That's a very conservative estimate. It's dead. Years later, there are still whole blocks of empty buildings and graffiti. I don't go to Santa Monica Promenade any more, because everything there failed. Covid again. They've sort of revived it by making it a night time pub crawl, but that's not my scene.
The American electorate seemed to think (narrowly anyway) that Donald Trump could fix this, despite having done a lot to cause it in his rather disastrous first term. Careful what you wish for. Now he's tanked in the polls, but too late. That boat has sailed.

This is more than just a mascot it's an NBA Employee and a human being foolish move by Jaxson.
Lakers star suspended for pushing a mascot
Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes has been suspended by the NBA for one game after he pushed the Wizards mascot during pregame introductions last week.
As the Wizards mascot, G-Wiz, ran across the floor with a flag ahead of a game last Friday, Hayes shoved him, knocking him into the air. G-Wiz collided with a cheerleader who was running onto the floor. You can check out video of the incident here.

State Department will delete X posts from before Trump returned to office
The State Department is removing all posts on its public accounts on the social media platform X made before President Trump returned to office on Jan. 20, 2025.
The posts will be internally archived but will no longer be on public view, the State Department confirmed to NPR. Staff members were told that anyone wanting to see older posts will have to file a Freedom of Information Act request, according to a State Department employee who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation by the Trump administration. That would differ from how the U.S. government typically handles archiving the public online footprint of previous administrations.
