Russian far-rightist Zhirinovsky dies at 75, saluted by Putin

LONDON, April 6 (Reuters) - Russian far-right politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky, known for provocative stunts and anti-Western tirades that kept him in the public eye for more than three decades, has died after a long illness, the speaker of parliament said on Wednesday.

Zhirinovsky, 75, was admitted to hospital earlier this year after contracting COVID-19, according to Russian media, and was too ill to speak out publicly on the war in Ukraine.

There was somebody in Randi's chat the other day asking me about Russian anti-Semitism. He didn't believe it existed.

I was like - homes - you do know who first disseminated the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, right? (Answer: the Okhrana, or Tsarist secret police, and Russian "mystic" Sergei Nilus.) You might ask some of the victims of pogroms in the Pale of Settlement ...

And then I remembered this guy. Yes, at some point he acknowledged a Jewish father. But look, "self hatred" IS a reality, not just even in the Jewish community.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/ ... a179e6eed/

"My father's family was all killed," he said in an interview last week. "That's why I never talked about them." He offered little by way of explanation for the abrupt change in his life story, except a complaint that he has always been "misunderstood" as anti-Jewish, and offered no apology for years of publicly lying. Rather than revise his politics to take account of his rewritten heritage, Zhirinovsky still described Jews as the reason for much of what is wrong with Russia today.

Despite having made anti-Semitic statements a staple of his Russia-for-the-Russians political rhetoric, Zhirinovsky said: "I have never been anti-Semitic. It's all in the imagination of journalists." Minutes later, he returned to his familiar lament about Jewish domination of the media, the banks, politics and just about every other institution of post-Soviet Russia.

The performance was vintage Zhirinovsky. At times clownish, at times vitriolic, invariably sensationalistic, he has used dark conspiracies about Jewish influence to help build a following in a country with a long history of violent anti-Semitism. :|

[snip][end]

Something really interesting I noticed at Wikipedia.

[from Wikipedia]
In February 2022, Zhirinovsky hit the headlines for predicting in a speech on December 27, 2021, the exact date when the Russian military invaded eastern Ukraine en masse: "At 4 a.m. on February 22, you will feel [our new policy]. I would like 2022 to be a peaceful year. But I love the truth, for 70 years I have been telling the truth. It will not be peaceful. It will be a year when Russia becomes great again.
[end]

You can read his bio at Wiki - he really reminds me of Trump in so many ways.

What a good guy. He had recently gotten married and was working very hard on his football career.
We were all waiting with anticipation as to what he would have become in the NFL as he had a couple of years to develop the way QBs used to.
He set over 27 records at Ohio State inspite of only starting one season.
Great guy who is going to be missed. Our country and world need more people like him.

Born in Princeton, Ill., in 1933, Hays appeared on dozens of TV shows throughout the 1960s and early '70s, but her part on the CBS soap opera became her signature role, one she played continuously from 1972 until the series' conclusion in 2010. Love of Country is not Blind Patriotism. It is not devotion to one person or one party. It is knowing fighting for your country is single most important thing you can do. Do not accept the notion violence is the answer.

Robert Morse, two time tony winner, has died at age 90.
Robert Morse, a two-time Tony award winner also known for his role in "Mad Men," died at age 90 on Wednesday, his agent confirmed.

The boyishly handsome Morse first made his name on Broadway in the 1950s, and landed some roles in Hollywood comedies in the 1960s. “I consider myself an actor — shyly,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 1964. “I love acting. It’s a great use of body and mind … With all humility, you hope that you are doing something worthwhile.”

Morse was already well-established on Broadway, with two Tony nominations to his credit, when he became nationally famous at age 30 as the star of Frank Loesser’s smash 1961 Broadway satire of corporate life, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” The show won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony for best musical.

He won his first Tony for best performance by a leading actor in a musical in 1962 for "How to Succeed," in which he starred from 1961 to 1965. He later reprised his role as J. Pierpont Finch in the 1967 film adaptation.

I remember him mainly from comedy movies in the 60s like How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, A Guide for the Married Man, and Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad

Raiders legend Daryle Lamonica, nicknamed 'The Mad Bomber,' dies at 80

Daryle Lamonica, the star Oakland Raiders quarterback known for his deep passes, died at his Fresno, Calif. home on Thursday. He was 80. His death is considered to be from natural causes.

A Fresno native, Lamonica went to college at Notre Dame, and in 1963 was drafted by two teams: the Green Bay Packers of the NFL, and the Buffalo Bills of the AFL. The AFL and NFL wouldn't merge until 1970, so Lamonica had his pick. He went with the Bills, who had drafted him in the 23rd round.
