Spinal Tap drummer Ric Parnell dead at age 70

Ric Parnell, the British musician best known for playing doomed drummer Mick Shrimpton in Rob Reiner’s cult-classic heavy metal mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, has died at age 70. The news was confirmed Sunday on social media by comic actor Harry Shearer, aka Spinal Tap’s Derek Smalls, who said “no one ever rocked harder” than Parnell. No cause of death was revealed at press time.

Parnell did not just portray a drummer onscreen. The London-born grandson of music hall artist Russ Carr and son of jazz drummer/bandleader Jack Parnell, he got his start in the rock band Horse, who released one album in 1970, before joining prog band Atomic Rooster. Parnell played on two Atomic Rooster albums, 1972's Made in England and 1973's Nice 'n' Greasy, which yielded two U.K top 15 hits, “Tomorrow Night” (No. 11) and “Devil’s Answer” (No. 4).

I read this in the morning Chronicle and it truly sad. Secretary Mineta was interned as an Enemy Alien. He went on to become a Congressman and first Secretary of the TSA. He never forgot where his came from or how he was treated as a Japanese-American. The first Asian-American Mayor of San Jose Californnia (his hometown). Served in Congress. Always worked hard for the people who elected him and loved his country.

He will be missed.
Love of Country is not Blind Patriotism. It is not devotion to one person or one party. It is knowing fighting for your country is single most important thing you can do. Do not accept the notion violence is the answer.

Legendary comic book artist George Pérez dies after cancer battle

George Pérez, whose work for DC and Marvel made him one of the most iconic comic book artists of his generation, died Friday after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 67.

"George passed away yesterday, peacefully at home with his wife of 490 months and family by his side. He was not in pain and knew he was very, very loved. We are all very much grieving but, at the same time, we are so incredibly grateful for the joy he brought to our lives. To know George was to love him, and he loved back. Fiercely and with his whole heart. The world is a lot less vibrant today without him in it," read a statement posted Saturday on his Facebook page.

I loved watching him play. I recall how the press made a big deal about his shoe size which at that time was considered huge.

Actor Fred Ward has died at age 79. He played Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff, Remo Williams in Remo WIlliams, The Adventure Begins, and Earl Bassett in the Tremors movies. I best remember in as Remo Williams and as Earl Bassett since those movies are among my favorites. His versatility as a character actor to play a variety of roles in dramas and comedies spanned a career from 1973 to 2018 with 89 acting credits in movies and TVs.
Fred Ward, a character actor and producer who starred in "The Right Stuff," "Tremors" and "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins," has died at 79.

Publicist Ron Hofmann confirmed to USA TODAY that Ward died Sunday. Ward had a steady presence on screen since the late 1970s, garnering his first major role alongside Clint Eastwood in 1979's "Escape from Alcatraz." Ward memorably played Mercury 7 astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom in 1983's space epic "The Right Stuff" but also tackled giant monster worms side by side with Kevin Bacon in the 1990 cult horror comedy "Tremors."

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ruler of Abu Dhabi, has died at 73.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates’ long-ailing president, whose name adorns the world’s tallest building, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, died May 13. He was 73.

The UAE government announced his death in a brief statement without further details. Sheikh Khalifa, who became president in 2004, gave up running the country’s day-to-day affairs after a stroke in 2014 and was seldom seen in public in recent years.

As president, he held the most powerful position among the seven semiautonomous emirates stretching along the shores of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. His role as president derived from his standing as hereditary ruler of Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s largest and richest emirate.
