Honduras Denounces Assassination of Libre Party Founder Amid Cycle of Impunity since the 2009

Honduras denounces assassination of Libre Party founder René Altamirano, a prominent human rights lawyer and key architect of the left-wing political movement that emerged after the 2009 U.S.-backed coup. The killing—carried out by two masked assailants on a motorcycle outside Altamirano’s law office in San Pedro Sula on Friday, February 6, 2026—has sparked nationwide condemnation and fears of a return to the state-sponsored violence that has plagued Honduras for over a decade.

Former Defense Minister and presidential candidate Rixi Moncada, a leading figure in the Libre Party, issued a powerful statement denouncing the murder as part of a “long night of blood and impunity” that began with the ousting of President Manuel Zelaya in 2009. “They violently removed us in 2009,” Moncada wrote on X, “and unleashed a cycle of assassinations that continues today.”

I loved watching his movies. I wasn't a fan of The Godfather movie but I like his movies after that. Movies like Tender Mercies, The Natural, Phenomenon, Deep Impact, and Open Range.
