Exclusive: Facebook owner is behind $60 mln deal for Meta name rights
Dec 13 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms Inc (FB.O), the owner of social media network Facebook, is behind a $60 million deal to acquire the trademark assets of U.S. regional bank Meta Financial Group (CASH.O), spokespeople for the companies said on Monday.
The deal underscores how valuable the Meta name has become for the technology giant, which is betting that its focus on the metaverse - shared digital spaces accessed via the internet through an array of devices - will pay off handsomely in the coming years.

It's ironic, but it really seems Mark's next vision for his "Metaverse" is to kind of build the Matrix in real life.
I'm kinda convinced Mark has read Neal Stephenson's cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, where the Metaverse is a thing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaverse
The closest to what Mark wants to do AFA real tech (as opposed to sci-fi) is a - well, shall we call it a simulation of the real world - called Second Life. Which has been around since 2003. Of course, there's also the Sims, but that explicitly defines itself as a game.
Fun fact: my entire campus exists as a virtual digital space in Second Life. Every building is there. Of course, your digital avatar does not have to look physically like you.
VR is fascinating technology. To me there's one key problem. Oculus Rift etc. is awesome, but we don't have to worry about the Matrix problem yet as I think no one will yet confuse the digital world with the real one, and of course, digital objects lack solidity to your sense of touch, though they are working on that (haptic feedback etc.)

Facebook’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp are antitrust targets, but its metaverse mergers may be the victims
Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. is in a prodigious antitrust fight with the Federal Trade Commission, but that may be the least of its problems in 2022.
Meta’s FB, -0.95% stock has tumbled 8% since early September, highlighting weeks of volatility stemming from a whistleblower’s revelations and lackluster quarterly results. Facebook is also coping with a public-relations disaster, shifting demographics, state attorneys-general lawsuits and federal actions beyond the FTC lawsuit that could cut off its most likely path to Mark Zuckerberg’s metaverse ambitions.

Judge says the FTC’s Meta monopoly lawsuit can go forward
A federal judge says the US Federal Trade Commission can proceed with an antitrust lawsuit against Meta, formerly known as Facebook, after dismissing the suit last year.
District of Columbia Judge James Boasberg said in an opinion released today that the FTC’s first complaint had “stumbled out of the starting blocks.” But a revised version, Boasberg said, makes the same arguments with facts that are “far more robust and detailed than before.” As a result, he’s denying Meta’s motion to dismiss and allowing the case to proceed, although he states that the agency “may well face a tall task down the road in proving its allegations.”

Thank You AOC.
AOC: Facebook ‘sabotaged’ the global COVID response with disinformation
Progressive Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) told Yahoo Finance in an exclusive interview that Facebook (FB) and other U.S. companies have "sabotaged" the global response to COVID-19 by spreading disinformation about the virus.
The tech giant, which recently changed its name to Meta, should "be broken up" because it exploits its overlapping lines of business as a platform, vendor, and advertiser, Ocasio-Cortez added in the wide-ranging remarks.

Americans, get jealous: Meta threatens to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe
Man do Europeans have it good.
Buried in Meta's dense annual report for the Securities and Exchange Commission, filed Thursday, is a surprisingly stark sentence laying out a scenario in which The Company Formerly Known as Facebook might have to entirely stop operating Instagram and Facebook in Europe. Yep, no Instagram, no Facebook, for all Europeans.

Top deputy to Virginia AG Miyares resigns after reports of controversial Facebook post
One of Virginia's deputy attorneys general resigned from her job after reports surfaced about a Facebook post she wrote on Jan. 6, 2021, during the Capitol riots.
That day, a crowd of people who supported former president Donald Trump broke into the Capitol building in D.C., pushing past police officers, breaking windows and trespassing in congressional offices. Many have since been convicted of crimes related to the riot.

We’re Publishing the Facebook Papers. Here’s What They Say About Donald Trump, the 2020 Election, and Jan. 6.
In the hours following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, employees at Facebook tasked with preventing “potential offline harm” found themselves under siege by a mob of a different sort. Reports of abusive content from users were flooding in. As one employee put it in an internal forum, many of the flagged posts “called for violence, suggested the overthrow of the government would be desirable, or otherwise voiced support for the protests.” The same day, Instagram employees reported that there were “no existing” protections against an onslaught of inciting content in places like the app’s list of most widely used hashtags.
Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer called on his staff to “Hang in there.” In response, employees began to openly accuse the company of fomenting the insurrection. One wrote, “We’ve been fueling this fire for a long time and we shouldn’t be surprised it’s now out of control.”

Love of Country is not Blind Patriotism. It is not devotion to one person or one party. It is knowing fighting for your country is single most important thing you can do. Do not accept the notion violence is the answer.

Farcebook changed the company name to Meta Platforms, started babbling some dystopian garbage about virtual reality, and left the problems unaddressed. This is apparently how Zuckerberg thinks. As long as the ad revenue is coming in, there are no problems.

Meta has threatened to shut down news content in Canada, following a new law proposed by the Canadian government.
The parent company of Facebook and Instagram would be forced to share revenue with local news organisations according to the proposed Bill C-18 legislation, modelled after the controversial Australia’s News Media Bargaining Code which was passed in 2021.

Facebook failed to block 15 out of 20 ads containing death threats to election workers submitted by researchers to test the tech giant’s enforcement, according to a report released Thursday.
An investigation by Global Witness and the NYU Cybersecurity for Democracy team found the Meta-owned platform approved almost all of the ads with hate speech the researchers submitted on the day of or day before the midterm elections.

Englyn Roberts was the baby in a large family, the center of her parents Toney and Brandy's world. But Englyn's life online told a different story. As the pandemic dragged on, Englyn wrote about struggles with self-worth, relationships, and mental health.
One August night in 2020, just a few hours after Toney and Brandy kissed their 14-year-old daughter goodnight, Brandy received a text from a parent of one of Englyn's friends who was worried about Englyn and suggested they check on her.
