I dont want to know what this is about, I am already so angry.

I may have to disengage, while my reaction to what is happening is APPROPRIATE AS HELL, it is unhealthy. Until more people realize what is going on, I cant, I just cant.

'He just shot people': Texas mall killer brought 8 guns
The gunman in the Texas mall shooting had eight legally obtained weaponsthree on him, five in his vehicle – when he launched an attack last weekend that left eight people dead and seven injured despite lasting only 3-4 minutes before he was killed by a police officer, authorities said in a news conference Tuesday.

Hank Sibley, regional director for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia had no previous criminal history. Sibley also confirmed reports that Garcia espoused neo-Nazi ideology, but said a motive for his assault at the Allen Premium Outlets outdoors mall Saturday has not been determined........
Thats a whole lot of potential for heartache, saddness, and loss.

Gunman shot every customer in Detroit gas station after warning clerk, victim says
A victim in a Saturday triple-shooting at a Detroit gas station says the gunman warned a clerk during a dispute that he would shoot every customer in the store before opening fire.

David Langston says he pleaded “don’t shoot” to the gunman, who, according to police, was angered in a dispute with the clerk over $3. He said his best friend, Gregory Karlos Samuel Fortner-Kelly, also begged the gas station’s clerk to open the locked doors of the business and let them out before being shot. The doors remained locked and the gunman shot the customers inside, Langston told Free Press reporter Jasmin Barmore, who is a friend of the victims.Langston, Fortner-Kelly and another patron were shot. Fortner-Kelly, 37, was killed.

Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney Kym Worthy confirmed late Tuesday evening that the clerk locked the gas station with the patrons and shooter inside.......

History of Mother’s Day as a Day of Peace: Julia Ward Howe
Too few Americans are aware that early advocates of Mother’s Day in the United States originally envisioned it as a day of peace, to honor and support mothers who lost sons and husbands to the carnage of the Civil War.

In 1870 — nearly 40 years before it became an official U.S. holiday in 1914 — social justice advocate Julia Ward Howe issued her inspired Mother’s Day Proclamation, which called upon mothers of all nationalities to band together to promote the “amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.” She envisioned a day of solemn council where women from all over the world could meet to discuss the means whereby to achieve world peace......
MOTHER’S DAY PROCLAMATION
Boston, 1870

“Arise, then… women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts,
whether our baptism be that of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies.
Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage,
for caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country
to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.

From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own.
It says: Disarm, Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
nor violence vindicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
at the summons of war,
let women now leave all that may be left of home
for a great and earnest day of council.

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them then solemnly take council with each other as to the means
whereby the great human family can live in peace,
each bearing after his own kind the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
but of God.

In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask
that a general congress of women, without limit of nationality,
may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient,
and at the earliest period consistent with its objects,
to promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
the amicable settlement of international questions,
the great and general interests of peace.“

~ Julia Ward Howe

In fact, that is exactly how Mother's Day began. It was not cooked up by business owners or PR departments to create another reason for people to have to buy stuff. It was in fact intended as an anti-war observance.

It's worth looking at how most of our holidays began. They usually started as days of hope, but became obligatory observations involving various means of consumption.

My main point in the thread that the GOP point is gaslighting and fraud. First, they say "thoughts and prayers" then "we can't talk politics now while we're burying the dead" then "mental illness".

But there aren't any bills by the right to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, in fact they passed bills to INCREASE the ability of the mentally ill to buy and own weapons. Plus, no bills to increase treatment for mental illness. The last bill to do that was ObamaCare, passed with zero GOP votes, and almost repealed by the GOP with nothing to replace it with.

I believe there is already a law on the books that addresses that issue.
But, like most gun laws it doesn't work and like all laws if they aren't enforced they never work.

We can't even agree on the precise legal definition of mental illness. Besides, it's only peripherally relevant to the issue, which regards whether or not life in this country should be an arms race.

First thing Trump and the GOP did in 2017 was pass a bill to make it easier for mentally ill people to purchase guns.

Fear is not a mental illness, it is preservation of the species. Unfortunately, our culture handles it badly, if at all.

I repeat that the real underlying problem, which has existed since before the Industrial Revolution, is that technology completely changes the way most people make a living at regular and accelerating intervals. Right now it appears to be down to about 20 years, and it also appears that the time interval will continue to shorten.

People are alienated, lost, and scared. Meanwhile there is the peripheral effect that any bad idea is communicated to a mass audience within minutes instead of years. There is no society in history of civilization that survived the results of these processes if it did not consciously address them.

The problem is that they don't work, it's that any mental illness laws CAN'T work.

Unless there are background checks, it's impossible to determine if a person has a mental illness. People with mental illness don't look any different from those who don't. So, if there is a law prohibiting them from having a weapon it's absolutely useless if there if you're not allowed to check if there is a reason why someone shouldn't have a firearm. To say that "there are laws about this" is a practice of willful ignorance.

Yea there really isnt help and at the same time much of our elected officials and authorities are mentally ill as well. If they really wanted to help people suffering mental illness they could change the way wealth is distributed in the United States and the way employment is administered. That alone could cut the prison population and likely greatly reduce the occurrences of murder/suicide.

New Mexico gunman who killed 3 randomly shot at cars and houses, police say
FARMINGTON, N.M. — An 18-year-old gunman who killed three people and injured six others, including two police officers, used at least three firearms in a rampage through a northwestern New Mexico community, shooting randomly at cars and houses, authorities said Monday.

Officers began receiving reports of gunshots at about 10:57 a.m. in Farmington, New Mexico, a city of more than 45,000 people about 200 miles north of Albuquerque. In a video released late Monday, Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said the gunman fired three weapons, including an AR-style rifle.

The shooting was "honestly one of the most horrific and difficult days that Farmington has ever had as a community," he said, adding that investigators are searching for a motive for the attack, including talking to the shooter’s family.......

Also anxiety and constant worry and that people feel bad worried frightened anxious all the time doesn't bode well for a society or make for the ingredients for a peaceful world. And even if some people are relatively secure and happy in spite of it all, the larger energy of society is toxically tainted.

American freedom, unless continually guarded by the population as a whole, degenerates into the tyranny of the mass, usually encouraged by the free spending of the wealthy in politics.

We fell down on the job in regard to corporate vs social priorities, now we're not free. We can't even go in a market without wondering whether we'd do better packing heat.

A society in which individual responsibility degenerates into brute self-preservation will not survive. It invariably leads to civil war and collapse.

Nine people, including children, were injured Monday night in a Memorial Day shooting along the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk in Florida after a dispute broke out between two groups, according to police.

No Gun Control Reform Laws & this is the result.

8 killed, 71 injured in mass shootings over long holiday weekend

Eight people were killed and more than 70 others were injured in mass shootings during the long Memorial Day weekend, according to an online tracker.

Love that area. Been there many times with friends, gf's, & family, rented tandem bikes, gone to the beach there, took in all the tacky surf shops, had to dodge the folks on high speed e-cycles.

Glad I wasn't there that day.

This is a good example of why having national policies would help. State or city laws regarding firearms are only as good as your neighbors.

Also, Chicago is still well down the list in terms of violent crime

I'm done discussing Chicago. It's one of those stock boogymen that Glenn likes to trot out. It's irrelevant to the problem, except to note (yet again) that the Indiana state line is right down the road.

Georgia gun shop owner closes store because he doesn't know how the guns he sells will affect and hurt others.
A Georgia gun shop owner has reportedly decided that he can't in good conscience continue to run the store with the knowledge that the weapons he sells could one day be used to target children, NBC News reports.

Jon Waldman said business at his Georgia Ballistics shop in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth has been steady since he opened it in March 2021, but the mass shooting epidemic compelled him to close shop.

Waldman said the March 27 shooting at a Nashville Christian school and the May 3 shooting at an Atlanta hospital were the last straws for him. The 43-year-old has already shuttered his store and expects to have all the weapons cleared out by June 15.
