Picked My First Tomatoe of the Season

Post by Number6 »

The last time I tried growing tomatoes was about 10 years ago using one of those hanging tomato planters which turned out to be a miserable failure. This year, I decided to try again but this time I would use a planter. I found one on Amazon that measures 12"x13"x14" and what's nice about it is one end has wheels so I can easily move it and the bottom holds three gallons of water. The bad part about it is it came with a plastic lattice which wouldn't support much weight so I bought two metal lattices at a Dollar Store for $1.50 each which works well. I bought two tomato plants and a bag of garden soil. Because my patio is small, 10'x5' with a fence about eight feet I don't get many birds, bees, or other pollinators so I also bought two flowering plants to help attract them. I do get sunlight from late morning to evening so they're in a good spot for growing.

Tonight, about ten weeks after I planted the tomatoes, I harvested my first tomato. It was a beautiful shade of red, firm, and had a good smell to it. I ate it with diner tonight and it tasted as good as any store bought tomato. Right now, I have about 20 tomatoes of various sizes growing as well as new buds so I should have plenty of tomatoes to last well into the fall. I'm thinking of ordering another planter for next year to double my yield. I'll probably plant them a couple of weeks apart to so as one planter dies out the other will still be producing. I may end up having more tomatoes than I can use so I'll give them to firends.

I guess it looks like I'll be gardening for the next couple of years.

Nice man. I freakin love tomatoes and home grown are awesome. So much better than the market. We grew some in a pot last year but didn’t have time to set anything up this year. The front of our house faces south. Maybe I should delegate a section there for it.

I got three plants this year for the first time since I was a teen and I worked one spring at a feed and seed store, and my dad and I did a garden.

I have them in a rectangular pot, and they're doing pretty good. I've had one tomato so far - and it was delicious, if a little small. Got several more coming.

We're also having fun with bird feeders in the back yard. Several types of seeds out, but hummingbird feeders and a bird bath with a little fountain.

Been cooking out a lot, have a Kamado Joe and just bought a Blackstone griddle, it's being delivered tomorrow. Gonna start off with an onion volcano!!!

I had to get rid of our bird feeders. We have roof and forest rats here and the spilled seed was attracting them to our yard. Then they started eating through our bamboo. They stopped all that when I got rid of the feeders. Too bad since we get some cool looking birds around here. The hummingbirds around here are fearless and come right up to a hand held hose for drinks and showers.
