California residents who are members of federally recognized Native tribes will have their tuition and fees at University of California schools waived, according to a letter sent Friday.

In the letter, sent by system President Michael V. Drake to UC chancellors and also shared with CNN, Drake announced the waived tuition and fees specifically for “California residents who are members of federally recognized Native American, American Indian, and Alaska Native tribes.” The move is a key part of the UC Native American Opportunity Plan, he said, aiming to make the university system more affordable and accessible for Native American students. The waived fees will apply to both undergraduate and graduate students.

'Burn them': GOP lawmaker sparks ire over Tennessee school library book bill - Tennessean
A last-minute amendment to give a politically appointed textbook commission final approval over books in Tennessee school libraries sparked a Capitol protest and heated debate in the General Assembly on Wednesday.

The legislation, HB 2666, passed the Senate earlier this month as a relatively straightforward bill to add members to the state's textbook commission and task the commission with providing guidance for schools when reviewing materials to ensure they are "appropriate for the age and maturity levels" of students.
Legislative leadership has repeatedly argued this session they are not supporting broad book bans or censorship, instead offering increased parental oversight for "age appropriate" materials in school libraries.

But in the House debate on Wednesday, Sexton suggested he would take things a step further.

"I would burn them," Sexton said of books he considers inappropriate.
Note: The first approach is every bit as bad as the second, and both are completely unacceptable.

"Increased parental oversight" just means "nosy, repressed, control freak conservatives" get to censor public library books they haven't even read, themselves. They sure aren’t talking about “increased parental oversight” of queer parents, liberal parents, trans parents, not-white parents…that’s the last thing on earth they want.

F. that, and f. all of these people, including this guy from Bean Station. :problem:

So how come these "Moms for Liberty" don't just, well, say ... I don't want my kids reading this book, and, uh, tell their kids not to read it, and let other people have the liberty to allow their kids to do so?

"Age appropriate" may vary based on the child. Some kids are ready to tackle difficult subjects and material early, others not. "No hard and fast rule".

So seriously, "Moms for Liberty," how about each parent making this decision for their child, some might find Maus - or whatever - "age appropriate" for their kids and others don't, so how about the ones that don't tell their kids not to read it, allowing the other parents and their children ... their liberty?

Also, BTW, in a country where the Digital Divide is a thing, "you can find it online" is not a hand-waving answer to this wave of censorship of school and public libraries we seem to be seeing. Hate me if you want, but educators need to decide on curriculum, and librarians on what it is in libraries. Yes, parents can and should offer input, just not total control.

Libburdy is only for conservative white males.

And, to a degree, the karens who crap out their babies year after year, and sew their pointyhat outfits.

Well, take it from someone who has spent the past 10 years in digital archiving: not everything is online and a TON of stuff that you'd think is online still isn't. Sometimes, it's online but in really inaccessible form, like the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission archives. Love that site forever, but it's a PITA to navigate, and it's pretty clear that that's on purpose.

So this is why I am such a massive advocate of digital archiving and free/open internet access of those archives.

When duped, manipulated conservatives like JoeMemphis prattle on about "parents," they are speaking of only one demographic of parent and it sure as heck is not Black parents, Latino parents, queer parents, trans parents, Jewish parents, immigrant parents, Muslim parents...unless any of the above are rabid social conservatives :problem:. Really, only the Moms for Libburddy type of parent counts for these a-holes, at least up until the day they put karen in a white bonnet and red cloak. :problem:

And the problem is, as you know, as we know, those people in your picture are SEETHING in RAGE this very minute at the very THOUGHT that we would suggest getting guns off the street and away from people who wont be responsible gun owners. SEETHING, and also SEETHING with RAGE that POC are replacing them.

They then run for office and the board cons go out of their way to vote for them which makes all them as responsible for those deaths as if they themselves shot them. I know that is harsh, but the times as harsh.

I don't consider it harsh, at all.

Anyone who thinks it's harsh can go sit down and consider how harsh it is for the survivors of the Taiwanese-American church mass murder, the Buffalo mass murder, and yesterday's mass murder. That's just talking about the past week and a half of American mass murder.

It's harsh for the people who are DEAD because of these fascists. So I'm not interested in anyone's complaints about harshness or civility with these conservatives or any of that trash.

They will tell you straight up that learning sex ed and reading Toni Morrison damages children, when their ideology and worship of vigilante violence literally kills children and elders.

The politicians you vote for are NRA minions.

How much have Lindsey Graham, Tim Scott, and Nikki Haley accepted from the morally-bankrupt NRA?

How many times have the people you vote for been endorsed by the NRA?

It's been worn out since the White Citizens Council started railing on "Chicago" and "New York" and "negro crime" in their newsletters.

Your vote has contributed to the Uvalde massacre. Daniel Defense, the manufacturer of the guns used for this mass-murder, is a backer of Tim Scott, your favorite negro to tokenize while on liberal message boards.

Maker of rifle in Texas massacre is deep-pocketed GOP donor - WP
The beneficiaries of the couple’s political contributions include at least one candidate who emerged victorious in Tuesday’s primary contests, Herschel Walker. The former football star is running for the U.S. Senate in Georgia with former president Donald Trump’s endorsement. Asked Tuesday night whether he would support new gun legislation, Walker said, “What I like to do is see it and everything and stuff.”

Recent recipients of spending by Daniel and his wife also include Republican Sens. Joni Ernst (Iowa), Tim Scott (S.C.) and John Neely Kennedy (La.), as well as Eric Schmitt, the attorney general of Missouri and Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in that state.

None of their offices or campaigns responded to requests for comment. A spokesman for Daniel Defense also did not respond. A statement posted on the company’s website says “it is our understanding that the firearm used in the attack was manufactured by Daniel Defense. We will cooperate with all federal, state, and local law enforcement authorities in their investigations.”

The arms maker, based in Black Creek, Ga., near the South Carolina state line, with a second facility across the border in Ridgeland, S.C., put $100,000 into a super PAC that backed the Republican incumbents in last year’s Georgia runoff elections. And Daniel and his wife have put $20,000 this cycle into the National Shooting Sports Foundation PAC, whose largest beneficiaries are Reps. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Steve Scalise (R-La.), the No. 1 and No. 2 House Republicans.
Congratulations. You happily vote for mass murder, just like a good, exploitable white conservative male.

So, do I think teachers have no accountability? Here's a counterexample.

Michigan private school teacher suspended after giving students 'disturbing' assignment featuring Barack Obama's photo with primates
https://www.insider.com/michigan-roeper ... als-2022-5

Students at a Michigan private school got an assignment featuring a picture of Obama next to animals.
The assignment asked the biology students to identify the primates in the photo.
The teacher responsible has been placed on administrative leave, CNN reported.

[snip][end]

MHO: should this teacher be fired? Up to the administration, but I think they ought to have a discussion with them about WTH the intent of this assignment was.

BTW, humans are primates. It is not incorrect to show a picture of a human in a handout on primates. But something certainly seems to be being implied here by using (only) Obama's photo next to pictures of apes and monkeys.

This is board con/GOP 101 behavour. What instantly comes to their minds is this comparison. What makes it frustrating for them is their acknowledgment (never publicly of course) that both Barack and Michelle are multiple times more intelligent and mature than they could ever hope to be. This is one of the reasons righty hates them so much.

The trash you talk is over 50 years old.

So why are 62pct of homicides committed by African Americans. Personally I do not believe it has anything to do with race.

However you seem to believe that white conservative violence is because some whites are inheritanly deadly and violent.
Do you have the same belief about African Americans.

We can talk about the relationships between crime, and poverty and inequality and lack of opportunity ... if you want. I also think the other issue is that African-Americans are policed, investigated, arrested, and denied bail at higher rates than whites, which means the disproportionality of crime might be exaggerated in the statistics.

BTW, you seem to not be getting the point that she's making a connection between ideology and violence, not that "some whites" (because of their "race") are "inherently violent". Would you concede white supremacism could make people violent? It does. But it is an ideology, not a racial group or trait.

Here's the reality. We can debate crime statistics till angels fly off the hands of a pin. However, as she keeps pointing out - correctly - Tulsa, Rosewood, there are many examples of a white mob massacring and practically erasing a black town, there are examples of a white mob lynching A-As (often with police help) but not vice versa ... sociologically, this has to do with differences of power, and why when it comes to violence one group can often be far more systematic, often because it has the backing of the power of the state.

:problem: I don’t hold that “belief.” So I reject the very premise of your question about “African Americans.”

As I keep telling you, day in, day out: Conservative whites choose to live the way you do and cultivate the attitudes you have towards others. Including other so-called whites.

Because white conservatism is a lifestyle choice, there is nothing at all “inherent” in anything you guys have done, or that you do, today.

It’s got nothing whatsoever to do with heritability, blood, or your so-called race. You choose to be eliminationist, violent, and brutal; you choose to force these children like this sweet baby with the gun bigger than he is, into that way of life. :(

You guys have spent the past 400 years creating governments, laws, public policies, and social norms to benefit only yourselves and make everyone else into second-class citizens. Or, just simply eliminate others (again, often utilizing the government to do so.)

You guys are the ones who have peddled the inherent inferiority of everyone not like yourselves.

You guys are the ones who peddle the inherent criminality of everyone not like yourselves.

You guys are the ones who peddle the inherent lacking morals of everyone not like yourselves.

You guys STILL comment mass murder based on these ideologies, you guys have been doing this continuously since arrival in this hemisphere as colonizers and human traffickers.

And most importantly: no other group of people in this country has ever made laws, Constitutions, public policies, or domineering social norms based on the group delusion that they’re inherently better than everyone else.

No other group. Just one group: conservative whites.
