State education board members push back on proposal to use “involuntary relocation” to describe slavery - Texas Tribune

Even if they're trying to use yet another made-up euphemism for buying and selling fellow human beings, "involuntary relocation" is by definition a human rights atrocity.
The Texas State Board of Education is fielding proposals to update the state’s public school social studies curriculum this summer.

“The board -- with unanimous consent -- directed the work group to revisit that specific language,” Keven Ellis, chair of the Texas State Board of Education said in a statement issued late Thursday.

The working group of nine educators, including a professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, is one of many such groups advising the state education board to make curriculum changes. This summer, the board will consider updates to social studies instruction a year after lawmakers passed a law to keep topics that make students “feel discomfort” out of Texas classrooms. The board will have a final vote on the curriculum in November.

The suggested change surfaced late during its June 15 meeting that lasted more than 12 hours. Board member Aicha Davis, a Democrat who represents Dallas and Fort Worth, brought up concerns to the board saying that wording is not a “fair representation” of the slave trade. The board, upon reading the language in the suggested curriculum, sent the working draft back for revision.

“For K-2, carefully examine the language used to describe events, specifically the term ‘involuntary relocation,’” the state board wrote in its guidance to the work group.

“I can’t say what their intention was, but that’s not going to be acceptable,” Davis told The Texas Tribune on Thursday. In 2015, Texas attracted attention when it was discovered a social studies textbook approved for use in the state called African slaves who were brought to the United States, “workers”

Splain me this.

Why exactly are conservatives so determined to keep things out of schools that aren't even there?

Michigan Republicans want penalties for school drag shows, can’t cite example
https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-gover ... te-example

Joined by Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon, a group of House Republicans on Thursday announced a new bill that would empower parents to sue public schools that expose their children to drag shows.

The six legislators were unable to name an example of that happening in a Michigan public school, but they proposed allowing parents to sue districts for up to $10,000 if it ever does.

[snip]

State Rep. Ryan Berman, a Commerce Township Republican who is lead sponsor on the new legislation, told reporters that a Jewish temple in his district, which also operates a private school, has advertised "drag queen storytimes."

[snip][end]

Msr. Berman, it's a private religious school, and uh, religious freedom?

There is no public school, anywhere, forcing students to attend drag shows. Events with drag performers at libraries and such are open to parents and families who bring their children - voluntarily. Parental rights?

The answer is easy, they need a boogeyman to frighten people so the can show these frightened people that conservatives are fighting for them and their children. Unfortunately, the frightened people who support these conservatives are too gullible to realized the fight is against non-existent enemy. As Pogo once said, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

Two reasons I can think of. Really three.

First, conservatives are dishonest people, especially the cultural conservatives. They should be backed into a corner and forced to state what they’re after with these pointless laws, which is more legalized white supremacist social norms.

Second, this is the same MO as them going around banning “sharia law” last decade.

No instance of so-called sharia law was ever on the books, or even proposed. And, yet.
Joined by Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon, a group of House Republicans on Thursday announced a new bill that would empower parents to sue public schools that expose their children to drag shows.
The Michigan GOP is running at least five candidates who are adamant that MI’s anti-gay marriage law be reinstated, based on their precious “faith.” Forget that there are plenty of LGBTQ Christians and supportive churches and heteros.

What they’re after is re-imposition of whites-only conservative Christian rule.

Case in point:
[snip]

State Rep. Ryan Berman, a Commerce Township Republican who is lead sponsor on the new legislation, told reporters that a Jewish temple in his district, which also operates a private school, has advertised "drag queen storytimes."

Relijjiss free dumb and relijjiss libburddy is only for white conservative Christians and their handful of miserable aspirants.

And those latter ones will be the first to go.

These stupid heterosupremacists need to be immediately challenged every time they trot this old “what about the children” canard.

Ask them exactly the moment when watching Bugs Bunny, Milton Berle, Flip Wilson, the Madea movies, Peter Pan, Victor Victoria, Annie Lennox, MASH, etc., made them gay.

The Spread of Book Banning - NYT
Explaining the increasing politicization of the book banning debate.
So..these kinds of subheaders are really annoying. Book-banning by design is politicizing.

How can you sit there and scratch your head about "increasing" politicization when the policies themselves are politicized? :problem:

Anyway.
Claire: How did book-banning efforts become so widespread?

Alexandra: We’ve seen this going from a school or community issue to a really polarizing political issue. Before, parents might hear about a book because their child brought a copy home; now, complaints on social media about inappropriate material go viral, and that leads to more complaints in schools and libraries across the country.

Elected officials are also turning book banning into another wedge issue in the culture wars. Last fall, a Republican representative in Texas put together a list of 850 books that he argued were inappropriate material in schools and included books about sexuality, racism and American history. In Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin campaigned on the issue by arguing that parents, not schools, should control what their children read. Democrats have also seized on the issue through congressional hearings about rising book bans.

And, sometimes, the disputes have spilled into something more menacing. The Proud Boys, the far-right group with a history of street fighting, showed up at a drag-queen-hosted story hour for families in a library in San Lorenzo, Calif.
"Democrats" addressing the encroaching violence of conservative whites is not "politicization."

Banning books is the politicization.

Are these journalists and editors the end result of George Bush No Child Left Behind education? :?

See this is what really chaps me.

I understand parents should have a say in what their kids read. I get it. I may not agree with the parents' decision, but hey look, if they don't want their kids reading Harry Potter because "it's Satanic" or Toni Morrison because, well, they're racist bungholes, ... fine. If you don't want your kid reading X or Y, tell them not to read it.

When you take it out of the library, you're depriving every other family with kids in the area from making that decision on their own. It's fine that some don't want their kids reading it - others do. And this refrain "well they can just find it online" - yes and no - depending on copyright, the digital divide, and a lot of other factors.

How about we let people be pro CHOICE on what they want their kids to read, or not? Leave it in the library - then parents and families can choose if they want their kids reading it, or not. After all, just because it's in the library, doesn't mean anybody's being forced to read it, either.

Yes, this is an opinion piece. :D

Who is calling the shots? Conservatives working to shape civics education in Florida
https://www.gainesville.com/story/opini ... 173262002/

[snip]

The debate over civics education in Florida is the latest political power play rooted in this old dispute. The strategy is subtle. Political conservatives are using money and political connections to alter Florida’s civics education.

Behind the scenes is Hillsdale College, a religious college in Michigan that is defining what it means to be a patriotic citizen. The concept is akin to the idea of promoting "civil religion" that evolved from the Federalist Party’s celebration of patriotic ideas and events to build its base of support.

Hillsdale College awarded an honorary doctorate degree to psychologist and author Jordan B. Peterson.

Hillsdale College was founded in 1844. Facing scandal and near collapse in 1999, a new president saw an opportunity to promote its conservative Federalist ideology as a form of super patriotism and rebuild the school. It now has an endowment of more than $800 million. Its 1776 Curriculum is used in its classical charter schools. (Read a critique online at bit.ly/hillsdalecollegeseries)

Supporters of the college include national and Florida-based politicians. Betsy DeVos, former U.S. secretary of education and Ginnie Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, are examples.

In Florida, they include Erika Donalds, wife of U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, who led the Florida Coalition of School Board Members, a conservative alternative school board association. She helped found the Florida charter schools sponsored by Hillsdale College. Florida politicians such as Gov. Ron DeSantis and former Florida Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran are identified with these charters. It is a close-knit group with a history.

Erika Donalds sponsored Amendment 8 to the Florida Constitution in 2018. The amendment was thrown out by the courts, but its agenda to limit school boards’ authority, ban books and require its version of civic literacy remain.

DeSantis has coopted it as he builds his candidacy for president. His legislative agenda prohibits teaching subjects that make students uncomfortable about past events (HB 7). HB 1467 bans controversial topics in textbooks. The new civics curriculum, with its particular set of values, will take effect in 2024.

It is difficult to believe that a small college in Michigan could impact Florida’s students at both the K-12 and postsecondary levels, but it has. DeSantis’ measures to revise the state standards for civics (HB 5), K-12 social studies (SB 1108), and postsecondary requirements regarding diversity of opinions (HB 233) are indicators.

Teacher training workshops are held to make the curriculum “more patriotic.” These changes were reviewed and modified by Hillsdale College. A new University of Florida Hamilton Institute was funded by the Florida Legislature to develop civics courses at the college level. DeSantis has announced the creation of three community college civics career academies to train students to work in local government.

Hmmm. "Where this money is coming from, nobody knows." Not good to have "mystery groups" controlling education in Florida. Some sunshine is needed.

I love the play Hamilton, but this Hamilton Center sounds like, well, bullshit.

A mystery group pushed for $3M in state funding for new UF academic center
The state’s flagship university didn’t ask for the money for the new Hamilton Center for Classic and Civics Education.

https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-p ... ic-center/

TALLAHASSEE — The University of Florida has received $3 million in taxpayer funds to establish a new academic center focused on civics courses. But the university did not ask for it, a secretive group did.

The group is so obscure that even the Florida lawmaker who asked the Legislature for the funding on the organization’s behalf does not know who is behind the group.

“I don’t know really much about that group at all,” Sen. Keith Perry, a Gainesville Republican, said in an interview. “I don’t know who they are.”

The university also did not interact with the group — the Council on Public University Reform — or the man who represents it: Joshua Holdenried, who has a long history of working with conservative and religious groups.

Yet the group had sway. The Legislature approved its initial $2 million funding request, and added $1 million more in a state budget approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis in June. Now, the state’s flagship campus is poised to open the Hamilton Center for Classic and Civics Education. A university spokesman said the $3 million in nonrecurring state funds are expected to be used “over time.”

[snip]

The center will also coordinate with the Florida Institute of Politics at Florida State University and The Adam Smith Center for the Study of Economic Freedom at Florida International University to help curate a new state education resource that aims to tell first-person accounts of victims of other nation’s government philosophies, including Floridians who fled communist regimes like Cuba and Venezuela.

The Hamilton Center’s vision mirrors an education model that DeSantis and other Republican leaders have embraced as they challenge what they say is a progressive tilt to Florida’s public education system. In recent years, DeSantis’ interest in civic education has become more pronounced as he seizes on culturally divisive issues and accuses the political left of trying to indoctrinate children with the belief that the United States is inherently wicked or fundamentally racist.

[snip]

Not much is known about The Council on Public University Reform, a nonprofit organization that was established in November 2021 in Delaware. The group has no website, virtually no information about it online and no working phone.

But its representative, Holdenried, has a long history of working with conservative groups, like the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington-based think tank, and advancing the mission of religious organizations. Holdenried is the executive director of Napa Legal, a nonprofit that advises faith-based groups to “protect their organizations and achieve their missions” in a way that protects religious liberty in the public square.

In a May 2021 interview, Holdenried identified the Alliance Defending Freedom and its founder Alan Sears as one of Napa Legal’s closest allies. The alliance’s successes have been marked in court battles to limit the separation of church and state and to reverse laws on same-sex marriage and reproductive rights. A spokesperson for the Alliance Defending Freedom said it was not involved with The Council on Public University Reform.

Holdenried is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Hillsdale College, a conservative Christian college with ties to DeSantis’ administration. He is also board member of Free Speech, a group that often challenges what it believes to be the silencing of conservative voices on college and university campuses.

[snip]

In a news conference last week, DeSantis said the state is “unabashedly promoting civics and history that is accurate and that is not trying to push an ideological agenda” as he promoted his Civics Literacy Excellence Initiative. The initiative, however, has sparked complaints from several high school government teachers who said a state civics training program they attended was ideologically driven with strong “Christian fundamentalist” and conservative overtones.

[snip]

Hillsdale College, for instance, has helped launch and support “classical” charter schools across the country, including several in Florida.

Conservatives who smear queer and trans persons as child predators are just projecting.

They make statewide policies that groom children into ignorance by restricting information and truncating their educations.

OKLAHOMA WATCH: Two districts downgraded for complaints under HB 1775 - Talequah Daily Press
In a meeting that was at times fiery and contentious, the state Board of Education last week voted to lower the standing of two large school districts under a new state law restricting certain conversations about race and gender.

Tulsa and Mustang Public Schools are the first to face consequences under House Bill 1775, which was signed into law in 2021. The legislation restricts teachers and school staff from teaching eight specific concepts, including that one race or sex is superior to another, and that one race is inherently racist, and that any person should feel discomfort, guilt or anguish because of his or her race or sex.

Board members, all of whom were appointed by Gov. Kevin Stitt, first focused on Tulsa schools. A high school teacher complained under HB 1775 that a staff training in August 2021 on implicit bias “includes statements that specifically shame white people.”

The department’s legal staff didn’t find a violation in the materials for the training. But audio of the session, which isn’t being publicly released because of the vendor’s licensing agreement, contained banned concepts – though it was a “close call” according to the department’s attorney, Brad Clark.

Some board members wanted to go beyond the department’s recommendation of “accredited with deficiency” and moved to bump it up to “accredited with warning” on the state’s accreditation scale. One board member, Estela Hernandez, argued that Tulsa is the state’s largest district and the board’s action needed to send a message.

The board voted 4-2 to accredit Tulsa with a warning. State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister and Carlisha Williams Bradley voted no.

When it came to the board’s attention that Mustang Public Schools had also received a complaint under HB 1775, for an anti-bullying activity held in a leadership class, the board meted out the same harsh punishment of accreditation with warning.

Texas school district orders removal of Anne Frank’s diary from shelves
It was the latest in a string of book removals being implemented at schools at the behest of conservative activist parents and school board members
https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/antisemi ... cle-714895

A school district in suburban Fort Worth, Texas, has ordered its librarians to remove an illustrated adaptation of “The Diary of Anne Frank” from their shelves and digital libraries, along with the Bible and dozens of other books that were challenged by parents last year.

[snip]

“It’s disgusting. It’s devastating. It’s legitimate book banning, there’s no way around it,” Laney Hawes, a parent of four children in the Keller district, told JTA about the order. “I feel bad for the teachers and the librarians.”

[snip]

One teacher called her in tears. “She said it: ‘I can’t even let them read ‘The Diary of Anne Frank.’”

More on the downgrading of Tulsa Public Schools over some supposed violation of Oklahoma's Heritage Foundation anti-CRT laws.

Cutting to the chase: the Oklahoma State Department of Ed board voted down the district's accreditation without hearing the audio of the supposedly offensive statements.

:problem:

OSDE now clarifying previous statements on TPS HB 1775 violation - MSN/KOKH, video
Fox 25 is learning new information about the allegation that Tulsa Public Schools violated House Bill 1775, the state's ban on critical race theory.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is now clarifying previous statements on the lecture in question, and goes on to say this instance underscores the vague language of HB 1775.

The original complaint made by a Memorial High School teacher back in February, says they were "told by Tulsa Public Schools administrators that I must complete a mandatory set of 3 compliance courses... The 2nd compliance course contains sections that include statements that specifically shame white people for past offense in history, and state that all are implicitly racially biased by nature."
This language is lifted directly from the Heritage Foundation anti-CRT site. https:// www.heritage. org/article/protecting-k-12-students-discrimination - link broken on purpose

Here's the weasel-worded "clarification" by the OSDE.
To clarify, the audio is the same.
So let's hear it.
The OSDE stands by its conclusion that the training presentation violated house bill 1775. It is clear that the audio recording, which was reviewed weeks after review of the slide-deck, had a greater impact on the agency's review team.
So...let's hear it so we can hear for ourselves what's so offensive to these delicate Birth of A Nation snowflakes.
The concepts put forth, regardless of whether read or heard, violated the spirit of that law. As stated previously by OSDE's general counsel, the decision was a ‘close call’ and, as such, recommended a deficiency for the school district as required, not the decidedly more severe penalty imposed by the state board of education in a 4-2 vote. This instance underscores how the vague language of HB 1775 invites imprecise judgment calls, which in turn can have a chilling effect on classroom instruction.

OSDE says that TPS' status is accreditation with warning.
Warning for...???

According to the accompanying news clip, OSDE is not forthcoming with the audio either to the board or KOKH.

I hope Tulsa Pulbic Schools will release it. We go through a version of this same exact snowflakery from these dumb, propagandized conservative whites at RFL on a weekly basis. :problem:

I love it. The judge said the law would turn FL into a version of Stranger Things' Upside Down.

n his opinion, Chief US District Judge Mark Walker blocked the employer portion of the law, saying it violated free speech. He compared the law to Netflix's blockbuster science-fiction hit, "Stranger Things."

"In the popular television series Stranger Things, the 'upside down' describes a parallel dimension containing a distorted version of our world," Walker, a nominee of then-President Barack Obama, wrote in his opinion. "Recently, Florida has seemed like a First Amendment upside down."

"Normally, the First Amendment bars the state from burdening speech, while private actors may burden speech freely," Walker continued. "But in Florida, the First Amendment apparently bars private actors from burdening speech, while the state may burden speech freely."

Judge Walker, it's not the only part of the law that sucks, but, works for me.

Because, ya know, parents have a parental right to segregate. Splain me what this has to do with "liberty"?

Moms for Liberty activist wants LGBTQ students separated into special classes
She said LGBTQ students are "like for example children with autism, Down Syndrome" and should have "specialized" classes.

An anti-LGBTQ Moms for Liberty activist told MSNBC that she believes LGBTQ students should have separate classes from straight and cisgender students in schools.

Field Report with Paola Ramos aired last week and discussed the rightward movement among Latino voters, especially in Florida. Ramos met with a group of Moms for Liberty activists.

Moms for Liberty gained notoriety during the pandemic as they attended and protested school board meetings to oppose mask mandates and LGBTQ inclusivity in schools. The group’s past exploits include offering bounties for people who turn in teachers who discuss “divisive topics,” attacking the Trevor Project for trying to prevent LGBTQ teen suicide, trying to get a book about seahorses banned for being too sexy, and saying that two girls briefly kissing at a school function is “lewd” and “traumatic.” The group lobbied in Florida for the Don’t Say Gay bill.

“The kids that do have their, you know, they’re confused, or they are gay or whatnot,” said Moms for Liberty Miami-Dade member Crystal Alonso, “that the way they’re trying to go about it is to make it an open conversation and an open thing in classrooms.”

“But like for example children with autism, Down Syndrome, they have to have special IP meetings with a counselor, they have to be put into separate classrooms. I understand, because it’s a different type of education for children with those disabilities, but I think that for children that identify differently, there should also be like a specialized… something for them, so that they feel that they’re important enough that they’re being counseled.”

Ramos pushed back and suggested having that conversation “in front of everyone.”

“I think for the same reason why teachers wouldn’t just bring a child with autism in front of the class and be like, hey, he’s got autism,” Alonso responded. “Embarrassment….”

“What is, in your eyes, embarrassing about being gay?” Ramos asked.

“It’s not that it’s something to be embarrassed about, but you, I mean, I’m sure that you understand a lot of kids that are young and feel gay, some of them are shamed,” Alonso said.

“Because they can’t openly talk about it in their classrooms,” Ramos said.

“Right, which I understand, but there’s just a way to go about it so that everybody is respected.”

Later in the show, Moms for Liberty Miami-Dade chapter chair Eulalia Jimenez said that kids are being “influenced to be gay.”

“I believe that the gay community has felt invalidated and left out,” she said. “And, rightfully so, they want their place.”

“But again, why does this need to be imposed on young children?”

[snip][end]

Whaddya know, they're in the same county as me.

What needs to be "imposed" on young children Ms. Jimenez. Reality? Are you bothered with the imposition of knowing about reality? I am sad to say this, but it's true, at some point they will figure out that there is no real Santa Claus.

But now Ms. Alonso. So being gay is like having a disability? People with learning disabilities like Down syndrome are often separate-tracked because of, well, learning difficulties. LGBT students don't (at least necessarily) have those. :D

Notice that this is the inevitable logic of "don't say gay". The teacher can't mention it. Nothing in the classroom can deal with it. And now, of course, we have to remove the gay students, because, well, their existence might raise the subject for discussion.

And so now we have the new Jim Crow. The gay kids need separate classrooms. Hey, what else? Separate buses, separate bathrooms, separate neighborhoods ... :|

States rights to put up white/colored signs is libburddy. Buying and selling fellow human beings is libburddy. State-forced heterosexuality on everyone is libburddy.

Rhetorical q.: how many decades have I been saying that the goal of these anti-LGBTQ conservative whites and their blinkered followers is re-instating Jim Crow?

Their virulent hatred of LGBTQs is a strategic, convenient foot in the door to reimpose special rights for conservative whites.

Indian Removal was to protect this beleaguered race.

Southern whites are the negroes’ best friends but no integration.

Segregated classrooms will help gay kids feel special.

Eastasia has always been at war with Oceania.
