Roku, Google settle messy battle over YouTube distribution

Roku and Google have agreed to a multi-year extension for both YouTube and YouTube TV apps to be distributed on Roku.

Why it matters: Roku's deal with Google to distribute YouTube was set to expire this month. Without a deal, YouTube would've been removed from Roku's channel store, creating a big competitive disadvantage, especially during the holiday season.

Despite GOP efforts, Lucy Koh confirmed as the first Korean American federal appeals judge

Nationwide, members of the Asian American Pacific Islander community are turning their pain into action. They are running for office and being elected in record numbers for seats from the local to federal level, many as firsts in their states and nationally. Most recently, the Senate confirmed the country’s first Korean American woman to serve as a U.S. federal appeals court judge. After being appointed by President Joe Biden, Lucy Koh was confirmed by a vote of 50-45 to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Monday.

Koh was formerly a U.S. district judge in the Northern District of California. That position made her the first Asian American U.S. district judge and the first U.S. district judge of Korean descent in the U.S.

The Conservatives have lost the North Shropshire by-election, a shock result that puts more pressure on Boris Johnson after a difficult few weeks for the prime minister.

Lib Dem candidate Helen Morgan overturned a huge Tory majority to triumph in the contest, which was sparked by the resignation of Owen Paterson amid a lobbying scandal.

Senate powers through nomination votes in marathon session

WASHINGTON (CN) — The Senate burned the midnight oil Friday as Democrats pushed for a slew of nominees to executive and judicial positions to be confirmed, but pushback from Republicans and the lack of a bipartisan deal led to gruelingly long votes and a handful of confirmations before midnight.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had lobbied throughout the week for Republican leaders to cut a deal with his party and quickly confirm around 20 of President Joe Biden's nominees, or face late-night votes and a congressional agenda that could bleed into many senators' planned vacations.

Hmmm.

Redistricting is Going Surprisingly Well for Democrats

Conventional wisdom suggests that, because Republicans control more of the redistricting process than Democrats, they will inexorably benefit from this redistricting cycle. But an analysis of each of the fifty states’ specific or expected outcomes leads to the opposite conclusion: when redistricting is finished, more districts in 2022 will be to the left of Joe Biden’s 4.5-point national margin against Trump than in 2020, and there is an outside chance that the median seat will be to the left of the nation as a whole.

The following analysis only looks at whether a seat is to the left or right of Joe Biden’s margin in 2020 and not whether a “seat” is gained or lost in redistricting, as Cook Political does. Given the significantly reduced power of incumbency, the key question for determining power in a given congressional election is the partisan lean of the tipping point congressional district. This is also the most relevant small-d democratic concern: in an election that results in a 50.1% to 49.9% split, are the voters in the 50.1% able to elect the Congress of their choosing?? Even if Democrats lose power this year, the partisan valence of the map may allow them to regain the House in 2024 - unlike in 2012.

FTC sues to block Lockheed's purchase of supplier Aerojet

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators are suing to block Lockheed Martin Corp.'s $4.4 billion bid for Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings, saying it would limit competition and drive up prices for components used in missiles that Lockheed and other defense contractors build for the Pentagon.

The Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday that Aerojet is the last independent U.S. supplier of some key missile parts, and the acquisition would let Lockheed cut off supply to rival.
