Strangers Vowed to Reunite, But Didn’t Exchange Contact Info. 10 Months Later, They Both Showed Up: 'New York Magic' (Exclusive)
On Feb. 28, 2024, Erin Jackson was at her favorite restaurant for her birthday dinner in New York City with her husband and some friends. That night, Jackson, who had traveled from Arkansas, and the rest of her party were seated near to a pair of strangers — one of them a Brooklyn resident named Sue.
“We just started talking to them over the course of the dinner,” Jackson, 32, an owner of a marketing tech startup, tells PEOPLE. “They were so fun and started talking back and by the end of the dinner we were sharing our food with each other.

Democrats sue GOP county executive over armed volunteer unit they say amounts to an illegal militia
NEW YORK (AP) — Democrats in suburban New York are suing a Republican county executive over his creation of an armed unit of volunteer residents, saying it amounts to an “illegal, taxpayer-funded civilian militia.”
Nassau County Democratic lawmakers argue in their complaint filed Wednesday that Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman lacked the legal authority to form a cadre of special sheriff's deputies with “authority to use deadly force and make arrests under color of law.”

Pritzker Compares Trump Administration’s Approach to Nazi Germany During State Budget Address
As Democrats smarting from the 2024 election construct how they’ll combat President Donald Trump’s agenda, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is clear on his approach, straddling attack dog and whistleblower.
In perhaps his most strident remarks against Trump, Pritzker used the stage of his joint budget and state of the state address on Wednesday not only to warn about problems the state could face should federal cuts to spending and programs decimate the budget, but also to issue an unsparing warning that what’s happening in America now shares similarities with Adolf Hitler’s rise in Germany.

Godwin repealed his own law soon after Trump's first term started. It's no longer a rhetorical device to invoke Nazi Germany. It's history. The 1930s were a classic failure of nerve, and also a textbook case about how fascism wins. They seize the means of information, and if that fails there's always the goon squad.

New Google feature flags when you might be getting scammed in real time
(NEXSTAR) – Google is rolling out new, AI-powered tools to help stop scammers in their tracks, before they get your data or money. The company announced the new features, available on some Android and Pixel phones, this week.
The two features each work to identify and warn you of a possible scam while it’s unfolding, either over text or on a phone call.

Re: Hello
Doctors restore vision in patient by planting teeth in the eye.
I wonder if the tooth in the eye can get cavities.
I guess this surgery give new meaning to the term "eye teeth."A trio of Canadians are on track to become the country’s first residents to have their eyesight restored thanks in part to their teeth. Osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis, more commonly known as “tooth-in-eye” surgery, involves harvesting the body’s strongest natural substance to craft a specialized lens implant for patients with severe corneal blindness from conjunctival scarring. Tooth-in-eye surgery remains a comparatively rare procedure even 60 years after its development, but advocates hope the newest success stories can help popularize the treatment option for some of the most difficult cases of blindness.
Once the frame is finished, doctors install a tiny plastic telescopic lens into the dentine case before temporarily sewing the implant into the side of a patient’s cheek, where it remains for a few months as new tissue grows around it. Another surgery removes the scar tissue from the patient’s eye and replaces it with healthy tissue also harvested from a cheek. In a final procedure, doctors sew the implant into the eye socket under the cheek tissue transplant, where the lens helps partially restore sight. Previous surveys indicate many patients’ vision improves enough to allow them to drive cars.
Tooth-in-eye surgery is only applicable for specific instances of severe corneal blindness, when trauma only damages the front surface of an eye and not its retina and optic nerves. This was the case for Brent Chapman, one of the three surgical patients profiled by the CBC program As It Happens last week. Chapman, a massage therapist from North Vancouver, lost his vision at age 13 after over-the-counter pain medication triggered a rare auto-immune reaction called Stevens-Johnson syndrome that resulted in a weekslong coma and severe burns across his body and eyes. Chapman, now 33, has since undergone roughly 50 surgeries including 10 corneal implants, but none managed to permanently restore his vision.

VA State Sen. Lamont Bagby Elected as Chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia
From the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA); congrats to new DPVA Chair Lamont Bagby and good luck in the new position! Also, thanks to Susan Swecker for her many years of service and dedication. As for DPVA, what we need is a strong, energized, effective party that can help Virginia Democrats win this November’s statewide and House of Delegates elections (preferably by wide margins for governor, LG, and AG, and preferably picking up a bunch of House of Delegates seats), as well as in 2026 and beyond. Let’s do it!
P.S. The vote for Chair was: Lamont Bagby 172 – Zach Pruckowski 57 – Josh Stanfield 29 – Absentions 4

The Democrats can at a minimum take back the majority in one or both houses of Congress if they finally show some balls. If they can come up with real rabble rousers, they have the best shot in years at winning it all. But no more Schumer politics of appeasement, or else they are a permanent minority party.

Pennsylvania Undated and Wrongly Dated Mail-in Ballots Challenge (Eakin)
Lawsuit filed by three Pennsylvania voters, Fetterman for PA (the U.S. Senate campaign for John Fetterman (D), the state’s current lieutenant governor), the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) against Pennsylvania’s 67 county boards of elections challenging the “Date Instruction,” for mail-in ballots. In Pennsylvania, there’s a slight distinction between absentee and mail-in ballots, but we will use “mail-in ballots” to refer to both types of ballots. The Date Instruction prevents counties from counting undated mail-in ballots (ballots that are timely cast and valid but missing a date on their outer return envelopes) and wrongly dated mail-in ballots (ballots that are timely cast and valid but have an incorrect date, such as the voter’s birthday, on their outer return envelopes).

Judge rules Trump can’t get rid of Central Park Five defamation lawsuit
President Donald Trump lost a bid to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by plaintiffs known as the Exonerated Five (formerly the Central Park Five). Thursday’s court ruling brings Trump closer to potential civil liability for comments he made about them during a presidential debate against Kamala Harris last year, but it doesn’t guarantee that the plaintiffs will ultimately succeed in their case.
Trump’s history with Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron Brown and Korey Wise dates back decades. They were teenagers in 1989 when they were charged with attempted murder, rape and other crimes after a woman named Patricia Meili was attacked while jogging in Manhattan’s Central Park. Before they were indicted, Trump took out a full-page newspaper advertisement — not naming but clearly referring to them — calling to: “BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. BRING BACK OUR POLICE!”

Bernie Sanders surprises Coachella crowd
Questions abounded over whether this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival would feature many political statements. On Saturday night, politics took center stage when Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared, fresh off an event earlier in the day in Los Angeles alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that drew 36,000 spectators.
Just before singer-songwriter Clairo's set, Sanders walked up to raucous applause. The crowd was thin to start, as many were still catching the conclusion of Charli XCX on the Coachella Stage, but the senator's voice drew people running over from the nearby dining areas.

Remember when glenn touted California losing population. Well, it turns out California's population increased to 39.5 million last year making it the second year in a row the state say its population grow.
California ’s population climbed above 39.5 million in 2024, marking the second year of growth following a string of declines in the nation’s most populous state during the coronavirus pandemic.
The population rose an estimated 1%, adding 108,000 people compared to 2023, according to a report released Thursday by the Department of Finance. The increase is due in part to the number of births outpacing deaths and a boost in the number of adults 65 and older. The state said it also had better data to account for increases in legal immigration into the state from other countries.

Vatican City — Of the 266 popes who have led the Catholic Church, not one of them has been from the United States. While the relative youth of the nation means fewer than 20 of those men served after the U.S. Declaration of Independence in 1776, one prominent U.S. bishop has a possible explanation for the lack of an American leader of the world's Catholics up until now.

Daily Kos is moving to WordPress
For most of its existence, Daily Kos has run on custom-built publishing platforms. That might’ve made sense a decade or two ago, but now it’s expensive, outdated, and difficult to maintain. Every small change or upgrade requires complex engineering work, even as the existing system demands constant upkeep. Just maintaining security patches has been a difficult process. New features have often been promised but rarely delivered. That’s on me—and yeah, it’s embarrassing.
But starting now, everything changes.
