‘Historic moment’ in Canada as Ontario strikes deal for $10-a-day childcare

Canada’s most populous province has signed a long-awaited deal with the federal government for subsidized childcare, paving the way for a nationwide plan that Justin Trudeau hailed as a “historic moment”.

Unveiling the plan on Monday, the prime minister pledged that fees will eventually drop to C$10 a day by 2026, but experts caution that the plan must reckon with the reality of chronic staff shortages, fierce demand for limited spaces and murky funding agreements.

Biden honors Transgender Day of Visibility: "Your President sees you"

President Biden issued a statement Wednesday to mark March 31 as the Transgender Day of Visibility and "recognize the resilience, strength, and joy of transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people."

The big picture: The proclamation comes as conservative states continue to introduce and pass new anti-trans legislation, with dozens of bills targeting trans youth. 2021 was the deadliest year on record for trans people in America.

Gov. Gavin Newsom normally signs the laws in California, but he left the state on Wednesday night for a family vacation in Central and South America. State law requires Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis to act as governor until he returns.

Jon Stewart: Authoritarian governments a threat, not comedy

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jon Stewart, accepting the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, warned Sunday night that speculation about the future of comedy amid increased audience cultural sensitivity was ignoring a true and enduring threat: authoritarian governments around the world.

“Comedy doesn’t change the world, but it’s a bellwether,” Stewart said. “When a society feels under threat, comedians are who gets sent away first.”

The Carolina Panthers have hired Justine Lindsay as it's first transgender cheerleader.
Justine Lindsay and the Carolina Panthers have made history.

Lindsay has been hired by the Panthers as the league’s first openly transgender cheerleader, joining the Topcats for the upcoming season. Lindsay gave an interview this week with Buzzfeed News about the accomplishment, and what it means for not just the NFL, but society writ large:

Lindsay was relieved when her coach told her she could keep her bald head, and said she is happy to “inspire other young girls who may be insecure rocking their bald look.”

Chandalae Lanouette, who directs the Topcats, noted that it was Lindsay’s talent that landed her on the squad. “My goal is to create a team of individuals that are absolute fire on the field but are incredible human beings in the locker room, good friends, good people, and at the end of the day, you have to walk through the door first to get to that spot,” Lanouette said.
https://sports.yahoo.com/carolina-panth ... 40053.html
Which republican will be the first to condemn the Panthers hiring an openly transgender woman.

He's not perfect & being president is a tough job but he's way way better than Trump & any GOP'er for President

Leave Joe Biden Alone

A steady hand

Any evaluation of a president’s performance usually begins with a soul-baring about whether the writer voted for or against the incumbent. I voted for Joe Biden, and I like him.

I am not, however, a partisan Democrat, and I was never a member of the Democratic Party. (My parents were typical Depression-era, blue-collar Democrats turned post-1968 Republicans.) In college, I became a New England moderate-conservative Republican, but I worked for a centrist Democrat on Beacon Hill and for a moderate Republican, the late John Heinz, in the Senate. And so I always kind of liked Biden as someone to whom I could relate: a working-class centrist who spoke his mind, even when his thoughts were garbled or when he seemed comically full of himself.
