A 12-year-old Black swimmer was nearly disqualified from a Wisconsin swim meet for wearing a 'Black Lives Matter' swimsuit

(CNN) A 12-year-old Black swimmer was nearly disqualified from a meet in Superior, Wisconsin, for wearing a Black Lives Matter swimsuit.

"An independent volunteer official inappropriately barred a student athlete from taking part in the meet, due to their 'Black Lives Matter' swimsuit, stating that it 'went against USA Swimming's policy of no political language,'" according to the Duluth Area Family YMCA, which sponsored the event Sunday at Superior High School.

Snoop Dogg Acquires Death Row Records

Rapper-entrepreneur Snoop Dogg, who rose to fame during the 1990s on Death Row Records, has acquired the label’s brand from MNRK Music Group, which is controlled by private equity funds managed by the investment firm Blackstone, the firm announced on Wednesday.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, however, a source close to the situation tells Variety that Snoop’s acquisition of the Death Row brand is the first part of a transaction that is expected to see him also acquiring some of the label’s music rights — his own and unspecified other artists. The source says the deal is expected to conclude in the coming weeks.

Federal judge blocks counties from charging Texas officials with crimes for encouraging mail-in voting

(CNN) A federal judge has temporarily blocked several Texas counties from pursuing criminal charges against public officials who encourage voters to use mail ballots in next month's primary election.

The preliminary injunction marks a victory for officials in Harris County, home to Houston, who argued that the controversial provision in a new Texas election law barred them from helping voters.

I had no idea Richard Pryor was also a singer and used to open for Bob Dylan and Nina Simone.🤯 This is him in 1966 singing the blues. What an incredible voice… and his awkward bow at the end makes you want to give him a big hug.♥️

Sidney Powell must comply with nonmonetary sanctions, court rules

A federal appeals court on Thursday ruled that Sidney Powell and other attorneys who unsuccessfully sued to block President Biden's 2020 electoral win in Michigan must comply with nonmonetary sanctions imposed by a federal judge.

The ruling rebuffed a request from the group of six pro-Trump lawyers who had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit to pause enforcement of a Detroit-based federal judge's sanctions determination ahead of a Friday deadline.

New York is about to let noncitizens vote. It could reshape local politics forever.

NEW YORK — It was 1986 and New York’s public school system was run by a patchwork of elected local school boards, all of them hotbeds for fiery debates about how kids were learning — or weren’t.

Like most school board elections in America, turnout was low, producing opportunities for small voting blocs to shape the outcome. One group of concerned parents saw the opening: immigrants.

Venezuela Releases Imprisoned Americans After Talks With U.S.

Venezuela’s authoritarian government on Tuesday released at least two imprisoned Americans, a potential turning point in the Biden administration’s relationship with Russia’s staunchest ally in the Western Hemisphere.

The release followed a rare trip by a high-level U.S. delegation to Venezuela over the weekend to meet with President Nicolás Maduro, part of a broader Biden administration agenda in autocratic countries that may be rethinking their ties with President Vladimir V. Putin in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

At least one major media source, though, thinks Biden is doing a great job. Howard Stern effusively praised Biden today while also slamming the GOP as the ‘wacko party.’

Jury finds police used excessive force against Denver protesters in 2020, awards $14M
Jurors on Friday found police used excessive force against protesters, violating their constitutional rights, during demonstrations over the killing of George Floyd two years ago, ordering the city to pay a total of $14 million in damages to a group of 12 who sued.

The jury of two men and six women, largely white and drawn from around Colorado, returned its verdict after about four hours of deliberations. The verdict followed three weeks of testimony and evidence that included police and protester video of incidents.

Lawyers involved believed it was the first trial in a lawsuit challenging officer tactics during the 2020 protests that erupted around the nation over the police killing of Floyd and other Black people.

The protesters who sued were shot at or hit by things from pepper spray to a Kevlar-bag filled with lead shot fired from a shotgun. Zach Packard, who was hit in the head by the shotgun blast and ended up in the intensive care unit, received the largest damage amount — $3 million........
