Over 300 protests held Saturday against Trump redistricting push

Aug 16 (Reuters) - Pro-democracy activists and labor groups held hundreds of rallies and other events across the United States on Saturday protesting the Trump administration's push for Texas to redraw its congressional map in favor of Republicans.

Former Congressman Beto O'Rourke was among those who spoke on Saturday in Texas, from which dozens of Democratic state lawmakers fled to deny Republicans the quorum needed to vote on a redistricting plan that President Donald Trump had demanded.

The protests didn't get much Nooz coverage except for the one in Washington DC, where they have the same legitimate gripe that LA has. (Hint: it's the same legitimate gripe that Gaza has, but with only a tiny fraction of the consequences.)

If anyone wins the prize, either separately or solely, the first four things to do are:
Sign the back of the ticket and take a photo of both sides.
Contact the nearest lottery office as soon a possible.
Until you turn the ticket over to the lottery office, find a secure place, like a safe deposit box, to store it.
Don't tell anyone you've won or you'll be inundated with people wanting you to give them some of your money.
When you vote left, you vote right.

Congratulations

Winning tickets sold in two states for massive Powerball jackpot of nearly $1.8 billion

Winning tickets for Saturday’s nearly $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot were sold in Missouri and Texas, the lottery said.

“With final ticket sales, the Powerball jackpot came in at $1.787 billion – making it the second-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever won,” the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball game, said in a news release.

Molecular discovery that won Nobel Prize in chemistry is likened to ‘Harry Potter’ enchanted handbag

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Three scientists won the Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday for their development of metal–organic frameworks that could eventually help reduce pollution and combat climate change. A member of the Nobel committee likened the discovery to Hermione Granger’s seemingly bottomless enchanted handbag in the “Harry Potter” series, in that the frameworks may look small from the outside, but are able to hold surprisingly vast quantities within them.

The Nobel Committee said Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi were being awarded for “groundbreaking discoveries,” saying “some of these may contribute to solving some of humankind’s greatest challenges.”

Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai wins the Nobel Prize in literature

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, whose philosophical, bleakly funny novels often unfold in single sentences, won the Nobel Prize in literature Thursday for his “compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.”

Several works including his debut, “Satantango” and “The Melancholy of Resistance,” were turned into films by Hungarian director Béla Tarr.

Parents in New Mexico will no longer have to pay for child care starting next week, regardless of their income, making the Land of Enchantment the first state in the nation to offer free universal child care.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who championed the new initiative, told CBS News it would save families an average of $12,000 a year.

Plaskett narrowly escapes censure over her Epstein texts

The House voted 209-214 Tuesday night against formally reprimanding Del. Stacey Plaskett for communicating with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a 2019 Oversight Committee hearing.

A new era in New York City Politics has begun congratulations and best of luck Mayor Mamdani

The Year in Mamdani: The Incoming Mayor Was on the Streetsblog Beat in 2025

The honeymoon is almost over, so why not take a trip down memory lane?

Zohran Mamdani becomes mayor on Thursday, topping off a remarkable year where he went from zero (well, almost) in Democratic primary polls to hero of New York City voters in November’s general election.

I watched him swearing in from the old City Hall subway station, then I watched Bernie Sanders arrive at the city hall looking cold. Got tired of watching it freeze with nothing else happening, and now I'm banging on the computer.
