Thing about wi-fi is that it's low powered, but it's in absolutely everything, so it's very distributed and tends to create an RF blanket everywhere.

There's a much worse problem with 5G, a different system, that could make our current transportation issues look like nothing. The airlines are absolutely ballistic about it. They're threatening to cancel all flights, permanently, to any airport near a full power 5G tower that uses a certain frequency band. I don't know the precise technical issues, but it's something to do with radio altimeters used in civil aviation.

WarnerMedia, ViacomCBS Exploring Sale of The CW Network

In a surprise revelation, The Wall Street Journal brings word that WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS Inc. are "exploring a possible sale" for their jointly owned CW Network. According to the report they're mulling options of either "a significant stake" or full ownership to another entity, with WSJ reporting that Nexstar Media Group Inc. is "among the suitors." Nexstar's current portfolio is primarily local affiliate television and radio stations but they're also partial owners of the Food Network and online outlets like Zap2it and The Hill. According to the outlet talks are "far along" but could still fall apart, noting that Nexstar taking a majority stake in the network seems to be the "most prevalent scenario."

The Wall Street Journal does note however that "there are other interested parties" eager to take on The CW, but that talks with Nexstar appear to be the most advanced. In their previously noted scenario that seems the most likely, ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia would reportedly stay on as "minority owners and receiving commitments to be the primary program suppliers for the network." They cite "people familiar with the matter," revealing that internally The CW isn't a profitable singular broadcast entity, but the programming created for it is where the money is at for the two companies. Several of the shows, like Riverdale, end up on Netflix once their seasons conclude, resulting in a big paycheck, while others jump to HBO Max, bolstering the pocket books between the two.

I hope RFK Jr. loses this lawsuit. One, because he is a douchebag. But two, the outcome of this case could affect people on this board. Anonymous posting is a thing you can do at dKos, just as you can here. Should public figures be able to force people to reveal their identity? My answer: no.

NY Times and 11 media organizations file amicus brief supporting Daily Kos in Kennedy Jr. lawsuit
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/1608299

Anti-vaxxer Robert Kennedy Jr. is suing Daily Kos, trying to force us to reveal the identity of one of our community members. We’re telling him to go pound sand. Lawyers are involved. You can get the background here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. In short, community member DowneastDem wrote about Kennedy cavorting with Nazis at a Berlin rally. Kennedy then sued in New York court to reveal her or his identity. Kennedy claims he wants to sue for defamation, but he’s refused to sue any other media outlet reporting on the Nazi rally, and he’s refused to sue me and Daily Kos, even though I’ve said much worse things about him. Kennedy is attempting to dox a community member for criticizing him, and we’re refusing to let him do it. The great folks at Public Citizen are providing that community member with pro bono legal services.

[snip]

The brief was written by The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, joined by 11 media companies and organizations: The E.W. Scripps Company, First Amendment Coalition (the nation’s fourth-largest local TV broadcaster with 61 stations), The Media Institute, MediaNews Group (which owns over 100 newspapers and 200 other assorted news platforms), New York News Publishers Association, New York Public Radio, The New York Times Company, Online News Association, Radio Television Digital News Association, Society of Professional Journalists, and the Tully Center for Free Speech at Syracuse University. This means the full weight of the media establishment has joined in on our side. As they write in their brief, “Amici thus have a strong interest in ensuring that New York courts apply a standard for pre-suit disclosure of anonymous online speakers’ identities that appropriately accounts for the First Amendment interests in such speech.”

[snip]

Indeed, as the Supreme Court has underscored, anonymous speech has played an important role throughout U.S. history. Revolutionary writers garnered public support through tracts published under pseudonyms such as “Common Sense” or “Farmer.” After the Revolution, Federalists and anti-Federalists relied on the cloak of anonymity to debate the Constitution, writing under names like “Publius” and “an American Citizen.” As this history demonstrates, anonymous speech has “an honorable tradition of advocacy and of dissent.” [Citations omitted]

The brief notes that anonymity is important for voicing unpopular opinions, to avoid “social ostracism” or physical harm. To allow unpopular messengers to write without being prejudged. To protect organizations they work for from damage by association. To protect from retaliation—particularly salient in today’s acrimonious political climate. I don’t have to tell you why anonymity is so important. You guys get it. This site is built on protecting its participants’ rights to freely speak their minds without fear of personal reprisals. And these organizations want to protect their own sources and commenters from the likes of Kennedy.

[snip][end]

The downside of anonymity -- without moderation -- is it allows some nasty behavior without accountability. (Possibly.)

The upside -- well I think it all just got spelled out here. I wish I lived in a world where people wouldn't try and get me fired because I criticize Donald Trump or wouldn't send death threats to friends & family members over what I say. This is not that world.

The Kennedy family has done so much for Americans.

This one family has done more positive things than the entire GOP combined in 60 years, but this shit is MADDENING!

I think I told you his wife does a podcast with Tig Notaro who I LOVE but having a hard time listening to her friend Cheryl from "Curb" because of who she is married to.

Agreed ... among other things, that Irish-American Ted Kennedy was one of the key guys responsible for the Immigration Act of 1965, which finally and completely repealed that awful law written by eugenicists to keep Jews and others out of the country ... the Immigration "Reform" Act of 1924.

And I used to love RFK Jr.'s radio program. People complained about his voice. Ya know, don't care about such superficial stuff as that. I thought he did an awesome job tackling environmental issues, like mountaintop removal by coal companies.

But I can't overlook that - he IS partying with neo-Nazi anti-vaxxers in Berlin, and he does NOT have a right to force an anonymous blogger revealing the truth about this to reveal their identity.

FCC Approves Rules for ACP Broadband Subsidy

No big surprise since it had a January 14 congressional deadline, but the FCC voted Friday to adopt rules for handing out the $14.2 billion in Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) broadband subsidies.

It gives low income households money toward monthly broadband service and a one time device subsidy.

Board of WBEZ parent company approves acquisition of Sun-Times

The board that controls public radio station WBEZ on Tuesday approved the acquisition of the Chicago Sun-Times, taking a major step forward in a deal to create one of the largest nonprofit news organizations in the country.

The noncash transfer will not be final until contracts are approved, but both media organizations said they hope for a closing on or about Jan. 31. Under the deal, the Sun-Times would become an independent operation of WBEZ’s owner, Chicago Public Media, and convert from for-profit to nonprofit status.

Former MSNBC anchor says he wanted to leave 'hyper-partisan' political news

A former weekend anchor on MSNBC knocked what he saw as the "hyper-partisan" business of cable news on his way out the door.

Kendis Gibson, who hosted a weekend news show on the network beginning in 2019, is taking a new job with CBS News in Miami to work as a morning news co-anchor at its local affiliate there.

MSNBC Sends Stephanie Ruhle to Brian Williams’ Slot As ‘Morning Joe’ Expands

MSNBC is sending a morning anchor to late night in order to expand its biggest A.M. franchise.

The NBCUniversal-backed cable news outlet intends to shift Stephanie Ruhle from her mid-morning role to its late-night program, “The 11th Hour” as part of a bid to expand one of its key programs, ‘Morning Joe,” according to three people familiar with the plans. The expected maneuvers, which MSNBC would not confirm Wednesday night, were previously reported by Axios.

Hot damn, another subscription for something that used to be free. This kind of content, including raw video from breaking news events, used to be on digital subchannels. They didn't advertise that since they weren't making any extra income on them. It's gone because they rented the subchannels to paying customers, even though said customers usually run utter dreck that maybe four people would ever want to see.

I figured it was only a matter of time before it came back, this time with the box office open.

I'm wondering when someone in LA will start a massive ad campaign for an All Pursuit Channel. It's only a matter of time. Ka-ching.

FCC Gets Over $5.5 Billion in Rip and Replace Reimbursement Requests

The FCC said that service providers have asked for $5.6 billion from the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Reimbursement Program. Congress provided an initial $1.895 billion.

That is the fund Congress created to cover the costs of ripping and replacing insecure tech from U.S. networks to better protect them against potential national security threats.

Frontier and Spirit to merge, creating fifth-largest airline in U.S. in $6.6 billion deal

Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines, the two largest discount carriers in the U.S., have agreed to merge in a deal valued at $6.6 billion, creating what would become the fifth-largest airline in the country.

The merger gives Denver-based Frontier Airlines a 51.5% controlling stake in the combined airline. Spirit investors will receive 1.9126 shares of Frontier plus $2.13 in cash for each share they own, giving Spirit shareholders an implied value of $25.83 per share, which is a 19% premium over the value of Spirit shares at the end of last week, the companies said.

Media groups divided over bill targeting Google, Facebook digital ad market power

A proposal aimed at giving news publishers the power to bargain with dominant tech platforms over the distribution of their content is dividing media groups, with some advocates arguing the proposed solution could actually hurt small and local outlets it aims to help.

Members of the Senate Judiciary antitrust subcommittee also clashed over the proposal during a Wednesday hearing, despite a version of the bill being introduced last year with bipartisan support.

D.C. Court Upholds FCC's Antenna Rule Change

A three-judge panel of the D.C. Federal Appeals Court has rejected a challenge to the FCC's decision to amend its over-the-air reception device (OTARD) rule to remove a commercial use restriction.

One of the FCC's arguments for the change was the rise of streaming services, a point Senior Circuit Judge A. Raymond Randolph said in writing the opinion of the panel, which also included Judge Patricia Millett and Judge Gregory Katsas.

Bills Introduced To Streamline Satellite Broadband

Republicans and Democrats have teamed on two bipartisan bills that would help streamline the FCC's vetting of satellite-delivered broadband systems looking to provide competition to wired ISPs as well as reach uneconomical-to-wire areas.

Energy & Commerce Committee chairman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) and Republican ranking member Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) have circulated drafts of two satellite-related bills that would "modernize" the FCC's satellite licensing rules with the aim of "promoting responsible space management, incentivizing investment and innovation, and advancing U.S. leadership in next-generation, satellite communications networks," all with an eye toward promoting broadband competition and national security.

For Rebranded Paramount, Streaming Is Everything

The media company now known as Paramount Global fired off a battery of news announcements Tuesday, earnestly and near-endlessly making the case that it plans to extract every cent of value it can from every corner of its operations, all to the benefit of its streaming future.

It marks the most concerted declaration yet of streaming love by any major media company (short of, of course, Netflix itself).

We are deeply and profoundly sorry: For decades, The Baltimore Sun promoted policies that oppressed Black Marylanders; we are working to make amends

Throughout its 185 years, The Baltimore Sun has served an important role in Maryland: uncovering corruption, influencing policy, informing businesses and enlightening communities. But legacies like ours are often complicated. We bore witness to many injustices across generations, and while we worked to reverse many of them, some we made worse.

The newspaper’s founder, Arunah S. Abell, is credited with bringing affordable and independent journalism to everyday citizens in Baltimore, beginning in 1837, at a time when newspapers were focused on moneyed, merchant classes and special interests. But like others in this country during that time, Abell was a Southern sympathizer who supported slavery and segregation. And this newspaper, which grew prosperous and powerful in the years leading up to the Civil War and beyond, reinforced policies and practices that treated African Americans as lesser than their white counterparts — restricting their prospects, silencing their voices, ignoring their stories and erasing their humanity.

Newsom Rips Into Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, Calling Them “Propaganda Networks”; Announces New State Unit To Combat Misinformation

California Governor Gavin Newsom lashed out today at what he called “Perhaps one of the great disinformation networks in America…One America News” for spreading “a lot of misinformation” about Covid. He did not stop there.

“I’m not just referring to Newsmax or the primetime propaganda lineup at Fox News and all of their pundits that safely have been boosted, fully vaxxed that continue to promote a lot of misinformation. Forgive me for being so pointed and candid. People are quite literally losing their lives.”

Scoop: CNN to dull its liberal edge

Under new chief Chris Licht, CNN will dial down the prime-time partisanship and double down on the network's news-gathering muscle, top sources tell me.

Why it matters: Ratings are secondary to credibility, in the view of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who's taking over CNN.

EU to ban Russian state-backed channels RT and Sputnik
Ursula von der Leyen says stations will ‘no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin’s war’
https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/ ... rt-sputnik

The EU has announced it will ban the Russian state-backed channels RT and Sputnik in an unprecedented move against the Kremlin media machine.

The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said: “Russia Today and Sputnik, as well as their subsidiaries, will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin’s war and to sow division in our union. So we are developing tools to ban their toxic and harmful disinformation in Europe.”
