From Lester Holt to Norah O’Donnell, Why Are Anchors Leaving the News Desk?

Lester Holt’s announcement that he’s soon leaving his position as anchor at “NBC Nightly News” is only the latest in a wave of departures. And it comes at a moment when the national TV news media needs all the help it can get.

Holt, renowned for his ability to anchor over long periods of time during breaking news situations, said in his announcement that he plans to devote his energies to the newsmagazine “Dateline” moving forward. But his departure from the 30-minute nightly telecast that — still — draws millions of pairs of eyeballs is the latest iteration of a trend. Before Holt, there was Chuck Todd, who outright left NBC News earlier this year after exiting the moderator chair at “Meet the Press” in 2023; Hoda Kotb, who left “Today” in January; and Norah O’Donnell, whose final broadcast of “CBS Evening News” aired last month as well. All of this happens at a moment of media upheaval that has also seen a reshuffling of the board at MSNBC, which says goodbye to Joy Reid and Alex Wagner as weeknight anchors.

I'm not watching it either. CNN is out of my rotation and MSNBC gets old fast. C-SPAN still has the occasional gem among the dirt piles, like yesterday when a leading Democratic senator was ripping The Donald a new one at a pro-science protest at the Lincoln Memorial. Unfortunately, C-SPAN's real mandate is to chronicle every move the DC majority makes, and so it's usually some Republican saying something stupid, or yet another boring scholarly discussion of all the great things some other Republican did.

I'm much more interested in whether this country really has the cojones to organize a real bottom-up general strike. I have serious doubts about this. People aren't starving yet.

MeidasTouch Pops on Podcast Charts as Progressives Search for Answers

Soon after the recent contentious Oval Office meeting between President Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, Senator Adam Schiff went on camera to offer his assessment.

“I was horrified and sickened,” Mr. Schiff, a California Democrat, said. “This is Donald Trump caring about nothing of American values,” he later added.

FCC unveils sweeping deregulation effort

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is planning a new effort to roll back regulations on the tech, media and telecommunications industries, the department announced Wednesday.

The FCC said it is seeking public comment on “every rule, regulation, or guidance document that the FCC should eliminate for the purposes of alleviating unnecessary regulatory burdens.”

The FCC imposes religion, DEI removal, and some observations

The pattern of attacks on the freedom of speech are everywhere. You can't say anything online without getting attacked by MAGA trolls. You can't even talk anymore about DEI, diversity, equity, and inclusion. You can't talk about climate change because the Trump Administration believes it's a hoax. You can't attack right wing zealots because that's a violation of the First Amendment. And you can't talk about religion, unless it's their religion.

So, it should come as no surprise, that the Federal Communications Commission has decided to step into the fray in an area that should be reserved to decisions by the Supreme Court.

The FCC finally grows a pair of stones, but only for people temporarily out of favor with the oligarchs.

The FCC's ability to resolve problems is considerably diminished by the inescapable fact that since Ray Gun neutered it, it's a big part of the problem.

Next up... coming in a year or two... another new digital TV standard that makes ALL your present TVs, even that $1200 OLED one, useless and worthless. Government of the corporations, by the corporations, and for the corporations.

America’s news TV channel for the Mideast fires its staff after funding cuts

CAIRO (AP) — The head of a U.S.-funded Arabic-language television and online news outlet that claims a 30 million-strong audience in the Middle East and North Africa terminated most staff and curtailed TV programming Saturday, accusing the Trump administration and Elon Musk of having “irresponsibly and unlawfully” cut off funding.

In notices to Al Hurra news staffers about their dismissals, chief Jeffrey Gedmin said he had given up on the U.S. administration’s freeze lifting anytime soon for the congressionally approved money for Al Hurra and its U.S.-funded Arabic language sister organizations.

Chicago Sun-Times publishes made-up books and fake experts in AI debacle

The May 18th issue of the Chicago Sun-Times features dozens of pages of recommended summer activities: new trends, outdoor activities, and books to read. But some of the recommendations point to fake, AI-generated books, and other articles quote and cite people that don’t appear to exist.

Alongside actual books like Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman, a summer reading list features fake titles by real authors. Min Jin Lee is a real, lauded novelist — but “Nightshade Market,” “a riveting tale set in Seoul’s underground economy,” isn’t one of her works. Rebecca Makkai, a Chicago local, is credited for a fake book called “Boiling Point” that the article claims is about a climate scientist whose teenage daughter turns on her.

I suppose the teenage daughter thinks climate legislation is a liberal plot. There's a lot of that going around. You can read some of the print books in your tornado shelter, where you're going to be spending a lot of time this year.

CBS News president steps down amid company's legal standoff with Trump administration

Wendy McMahon, the president and CEO of CBS News, abruptly resigned from her position in the midst of a legal faceoff between parent company Paramount and President Donald Trump.

LONDON (AP) — A consortium led by U.S. investment firm RedBird Capital Partners has agreed to buy the publisher of Britain’s 170-year-old Daily Telegraph newspaper for about 500 million pounds ($674 million), the two sides said Friday.

Pentagon Press Association calls Defense Secretary Hegseth’s access restrictions ‘a direct attack’

(CNN) — Journalists who cover the US military say they are extremely concerned by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s constraints on press access at the Pentagon. They say the newest restrictions, outlined Friday night, appear to be “a direct attack on the freedom of the press and America’s right to know what its military is doing.”

The sharp words from the Pentagon Press Association came after Hegseth announced “additional credentialing procedures for press at the Pentagon in the interest of national security.”

Warner Bros. Discovery to Split Into Two Companies

Warner Bros. Discovery, grappling with declines in its overall business, said Monday it planned to divide the company into two publicly-traded entities, one devoted to streaming and content production and one devoted to traditional television.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will remain as the leader of the streaming-focused entity, while Gunnar Wiedenfels, the company’s CFO who has become known for finding new ways to cut old costs, will lead the TV company. The separation is expected to be completed by mid-2026, subject to closing and other conditions, and the bulk of the current company’s debt — nearly $38 billion –will be assigned to the TV entity.

Too bad he didn't jump.

One of the radio pioneers used to have himself photographed hanging off towers. He ultimately jumped out a window in a tall Manhattan building, after a huge conglomerate screwed him out of his legitimate patents to avoid paying royalties.

New York Times Grants Race Science Enthusiast Anonymity in Mamdani Hit Piece

The New York Times published a story that cited hacked documents at Columbia University showing that New York Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani identified as “Black or African American” on his college application.

Mamdani, who is of South Asian descent, was born in Uganda, where his family lived for about 100 years, according to the Times. He was not accepted by Columbia, where his father was – and remains – a professor of anthropology.

L.A. Times to Go Public, Says Owner Patrick Soon-Shiong

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times, announced plans to take the newspaper public during an appearance on "The Daily Show" on Monday. Soon-Shiong, who purchased the paper for $500 million in 2018, shared that the move aims to democratize ownership of the publication and allow the public to have a stake in it.

The announcement comes after a challenging period for the Times, which included a 20% workforce reduction and the resignation of the entire editorial board. In early 2024, the paper cut approximately 115 reporters following the departure of top editor Kevin Merida. Additionally, Soon-Shiong faced criticism for blocking the paper's endorsement of then-Vice President Kamala Harris over President Donald Trump, leading to the resignation of editorial board editor Mariel Garza.

So if the L.A. Times goes public that means they sell stock to finance their operations. What's to prevent people like Muskrat and Bozo and others of their ilk from buying/controlling shares in the newspaper and force the paper to become another rightwing media outlet?
