Cruz knocks ‘Sesame Street’ for having Elmo ‘aggressively advocate’ for young kids’ COVID vaccines
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) slammed “Sesame Street” on Wednesday after the popular children’s show promoted COVID-19 vaccines in a recent episode, accusing it of “aggressively” advocating for the inoculations for young kids despite citing “zero scientific evidence.”
The Texas lawmaker shared a recent clip from the show’s Twitter account in which Elmo’s father, Louie, tells his son he was “super-duper” for getting vaccinated before telling the audience the vaccines are safe and effective.

After Roe overturned, NC congressman Greg Murphy posts offensive tweet
In the hours after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling about the constitutional right to an abortion, there have been countless reactions to the opinion on social media. But a hot take by U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy, representing parts of eastern North Carolina, raised some eyebrows:
A tweet, since deleted, from the congressman’s official Twitter account on Sunday read: “No one forces anyone to have sex.”

Huh? :problem:
Biden is Nominating an Anti-Abortion Lawyer to Become a Federal Judge — Because Of Course He Is
Less than a week after the Supreme Court gave women across America the finger with the repeal of Roe v. Wade, President Joe Biden is slated to nominate a Republican anti-abortion lawyer to a lifetime appointment as a federal judge in Kentucky in an alleged deal struck with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
As first reported by The Courier-Journal, Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) and other sources say the done-deal nomination of Chad Meredith is intended to placate McConnell, who will supposedly pledge to not stall further federal nominations by the Biden White House. Meredith, a McConnell spokesperson and the White House all refused comment to the Louisville-based publication.

GWU to keep Clarence Thomas on payroll after Roe backlash
George Washington University will not cancel Justice Clarence Thomas’ constitutional law class or fire him, despite backlash against his concurring opinion in the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, the university announced on Tuesday.
“Debate is an essential part of our university’s academic and educational mission,” it said in a statement addressed to “the George Washington University Community.”

Re: The GOP Snowflake Thread
There may be good reasons why Thomas is not suited to teach at a university. Certainly Eastland should be looking for another job right about now, since he called the very foundations of our legal system into question. Thomas, though, is in a grey area. It would actually be a bad thing to dismiss him for a vote in the Supreme Court. You either support academic freedom all the time, or you don't support it at all. You can't say that if he'd voted the other way he'd still be qualified to teach there.
I'm sure that if they looked hard enough they'd find real misconduct worth investigating, since that's the kind of person he is. A political vote is not sufficient.

Academic freedom means what it means. I have some doubts about his judicial ethics, there are conflicts of interest involving his spouse, and I certainly don't agree with much of his juridicial philosophy and rulings.
Some like to present academia as some kind of monolith or denizen of leftists. It isn't. Conservatives have always been teaching at universities, and I certainly wouldn't stop them from doing so. That, of course, doesn't mean I have to agree with the crap they're shoveling.
Nuff said.

Re: The GOP Snowflake Thread
Exactly.
I was thinking that Thomas' judicial ethics might be suspect, or maybe he nailed a female student, or something like that. Firing any professor over political involvement outside their work at the school is a slippery slope best not taken. Don't forget that my undergrad degree is from "Uptown Communist Learning Academy," as the LA Herald-Examiner used to call it. There was a history of such things, and I'm against them.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Backs GOP Scheme To Rob Dem Governor Of Appointment Powers
The Wisconsin Supreme Court endorsed a blatant power grab by the Republican-controlled state Senate on Wednesday, using a case focused on technical bureaucratic matters to endorse a scheme to seize control of state boards and commissions by declining to confirm appointments from Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.
In a 4-3 decision, the court’s conservative justices ruled that Fred Prehn, a GOP member of the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board, could remain in his position despite the fact that his term ended more than a year ago, simply because the state Senate has not yet confirmed the replacement appointed by Evers.

New Zealand designates 2 US far-right groups as terrorist organizations
WELLINGTON: New Zealand’s government has declared that American far-right groups the Proud Boys and The Base are terrorist organizations.
The two groups join 18 others including the Daesh group that have been given an official terrorist designation, making it illegal in New Zealand to fund, recruit or participate in the groups, and obligating authorities to take action against them.

Top election officials in Arizona county leave amid threats
PHOENIX (AP) — The elected county recorder and the elections director in Arizona's Yavapai County are resigning after more than a year and a half of threats and heated criticism from backers of former President Donald Trump who accept his lie that he lost the 2020 election because of fraud.
County Recorder Leslie Hoffman said Friday that she is fed up with the “nastiness” and has accepted a job outside the county. Her last day will be July 25. She said longtime elections director Lynn Constabile is leaving for the same reason, and Friday is her last day.

Liberals and the left should be exploiting the hell out of this divide between Trumpers who accept the election and those who don't.
Same for so-called pro-choice Republicans and people who support DeSantis, Stitt, Abbott, Noem, and these other fascists.

Manchin torpedoes Democrats' hopes for passing sweeping climate action and tax hikes
(CNN) Sen. Joe Manchin on Thursday dealt a devastating blow to Democrats' hopes for sweeping legislative action this year, telling Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and his staff "unequivocally" that he won't support the climate or tax provisions of a Democratic economic package, two sources familiar with the talks tell CNN.
The two had been negotiating for months, and Schumer, a New York Democrat, had made a number of concessions to pare back the climate provisions to appease Manchin, whose support is critical in an evenly decided Senate.

Joe Manchin raises over $1 million from donors including Patriots owner, Wall Street execs, energy giants
Sen. Joe Manchin’s reelection campaign raised over $1 million over three months thanks to donations from the likes of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, multiple Wall Street leaders and energy giants.
That latest fundraising haul from wealthy business leaders and corporations came in the second quarter, which concluded a little over two weeks ago, at the end of June, according to Federal Election Commission records. The donations arrived as Manchin, a conservative Democrat from West Virginia, engaged in negotiations over climate change and tax legislation, which are priorities for President Joe Biden and their party.

The Senate is broken.
Most of the people who broke it are Republicans with connections to the global energy oligarchy. The problem, though, is the filibuster and everyone knows it. It enables them. Any single bozo acting on behalf of donors can kill any bill without 2/3, and you'll rarely get 2/3 for anything.
Fix it or the Senate will never work again, and the US government will remain broken and impotent.

DNC still plays by the rules, GOP will never again. Very disappointed but the blame is on the two we know about. I wonder if they are replaced with patriots if ALL of the other patriots (DNC) including Biden go along? You never know, I am worried they would only go for carve outs of the filibuster instead of completely getting rid of it which Moscow Mitch will do the instant he can when he has the numbers.ZoWie wrote: ↑Sat Jul 16, 2022 12:05 pm The Senate is broken.
